Indigo Prophecy

Didn't there used to be a thread on this?

I'm really, really early in the game (and burnt out by console gaming in general, at the moment), but I popped this in and am loving it.

I haven't played a third person adventure game since Curse of Monkey Island. Does it stay this good?

For the most part. It's gets pretty lame and impersonal in the last hour or two.
A few hitches aside, though, everything leading up to that last hour is pretty wonderful.

Fuck that game. Talk about getting your hopes up and then pulling the rug out from under you.

Don't let the amazing first half of the game fool you. The last few hours will betray your trust, kick you in the nuts, and sleep with your girlfriend.

Here's a piece of advice: The moment you see a cutscene where your character enters a church, turn the game off and make up your own ending.

The game does get weak towards the end, but it's still a good ride. Looking forward to their next game.

The only thing wrong with this game is that it tries to be an interactive movie. It could have been truly special, if it didn't limit itself in that way. Otherwise, the gameplay mechanics are fun and somewhat new, the score is pretty good, and it manages to stay interesting throughout, even though it does screw the pooch towards the end.

I loved this storyline, I liked its method of developing character but those Simon Says minigames that it uses for so many of the action scenes got very old very fast.

Once you hit the climax of the rooftop chase the game kind of poops the bed but I roll with it. The game is so great up to then that it earns enough goodwill from me. Some of the scenes while the murder investigation is still going are so tense.

I think the only other thing I didn't like about the game was the lack of multiple save slots. I wish I could have branched out at different points to see how it would affect the game later.

The game promises so much and delivers so little. It's ultimately very linear, the gameplay mechanics are restricting and the story collapases under its own weight during the last third. It is most definitely not an adventure game.

It's barely a game at all, frankly.

If I wanted to play an adventure game, the best of the adventure games, what would that be?

This is a genre I've never experienced.
That's easy: Grim Fandango. What's harder is finding a copy.

The Secret of Monkey Island series.

People who hate Indigo Prophecy? The hell did you all come from?

Sure, the storyline gets a little silly, but I really thought it was a great evolution for adventure games (yes, it's an adventure game) and still to date the most cinematic game ever made. Just the unique control style allowed it to do so much so easily, and plus it did that quick time event thing better than anyone.

But yeah, Grim Fandango is easily the best adventure games ever made. Monkey Island's great as well, as is Broken Sword. Just look for any old Lucasarts title, you can't go wrong.

There have been some great recommendations on here so far. The Longest Journey is another one that you probably can't go wrong with. I picked up a cheap jewel case version of it at a Target a while back for less than $10. The sequel is Dreamfall, which also appeared on the original Xbox, and it went all 3-D and added some combat elements.

Indigo Prophecy is most certainly not an adventure game. In an adventure game you interact with items in order to solve puzzles, thereby progressing the story. In Indigo Prophecy you interact with items in order to make a meter go up or down. That's about as interesting a gameplay mechanic as filling your gas tank.

I'm not a fan of The Longest Journey, incidentally. It suffers from some serious Hideo-Kojima-Syndrome of having talking-head cutscenes go on for a half-hour at a time. But at least it's a legitimate adventure game.

I second the love for Grim Fandango and the Monkey Island series.

Indigo is not an adventure game. The basic gameplay mechanism is a version of Simon.

Is it actually just called Simon?

Grim Fandango is exceptional, Longest Journey is one of the last great point-and-click adventures - do not recommend Dreamfall. The ending was a scam and the story was awful.

Indigo Prophecy was called Farenheit over here I think - and the director of the game himself came out and admitted less effort went into the final act - he even seems pretty ashamed of it, but I guess there's not really much you can do about it now. I wholeheartedly agree about turning it off in the church.

Monkey Island 3 is good. Discworld 2. I really liked Gabriel Knight: Blood of the Sacred, but it's probably a bit too much work for some. Suffers from some serious backstory.

The Leisure Suit Larry games were also rather excellent. Sam & Max Hit the Road. Day of the Tentacle. Fucking love adventure games.

Underlined. Also, Day of the Tentacle.

Wasn't there a sequence in Indigo Prophecy where you could have intercourse with the female character? I read something like that.
Still is overseas as near as I understand.

Does the church that everyone is saying quit after involve running from angels? If so I might have given up at the perfect time.
Yes. You did.
Wow. I'm unintentionally awesome!
I just found that looking for info on this game. How could I not love this game? I don't see it.

I think they actually had to remove that scene in the american version.

There's several screwing scenes in prophecy. They're pretty cringeworthy, especially since they're trying to be tasteful - you can't try to be tasteful when putting sex sequences in a videogame - it just doesn't need to be there.

The Phoenix Wright games are also excellent adventures if you happen to own a DS, though a little different.

If you want something newer, try the new Sam and Max episodic games. While not exactly at the level of the old ones they're definitely the best adventure games now.
