Kraftwerk

Touring! I described them to my wife as "the P-Funk of electronic music", which probably isn't quite true, but it sounded pretty fucking good.

Any love for the sterile, emotionless, proto-techno of these Germans?
Well, Germans do love techno. And scheisse porn.

The only German music I can say I like is Rammstein.

Deep love for the first two (traffic cone) records*, which are far more lively than anything else they ever did, and equal sadness for the band's refusal to consider the discs part of their catalog. Supposedly they will be released in remastered form once The Catalog comes out, but that compilation has been over four years in the offing so I'm not holding my breath.

'The Man-Machine' gets a lot of play in my house still. I don't get much into anything post-'70s or even the records between 'Ralf und Florian' or 'Man-Manchine' for some reason. Isolated tracks, but a lot of that stuff is too sterile.

Now I wish I could find my copy of the Senor Coconut album.

*And for Organization: Tone Float and obvious offshoot: the first two NEU! albums

I've seen them on tour a few years ago. They were awesome, especially considering the fact that they were middle-aged German guys standing in front of laptops.

Movie geek trivia: Work by both early Kraftwerk & offshoot Neu! is featured on the soundtrack of that great kungfu classic Master of the Flying Guillotine.

Fuck. I'm broke. I don't need more bands coming to town...

If I go, I'll need to wear this to fit in the mood:

Neu! is fantastic, but Kraftwerk sounds comical to me with their blips and bloops, especially that "Computer World" album.

Kraftwerk! Forget Kraftwerk! Chavez, do your Atari Teenage Riot impression!

Damn. I used to love Kraftwerk. And Atari Teenage Riot was one of the craziest shows I've been to. Alec decided to punch me in the face for some reason. I believe it may have ended up in some music video or concert compliation as they were filming the show I was at. Either way I haven't thought of either band in ages.

What? Awesome!

It fucking hurt, but yah, it was pretty awesome. Haha. I thought he broke my nose. I think I was 15 or 16 at the time. It was so long ago. It wouldn't stop bleeding, but I just went to the bathroom, stuffed some TP up there, and came back down to the pit. Man, what a crazy fucking show.

I would have been scared to death to go to an ATR show when I was 15. Pretty cool that you saw them. I love Atari Teenage Riot, even though they were absolutely ridiculous.

Back on topic: Kraftwerk is one of those bands I know of but have never heard. I'm weary of old electronic music sounding too dated for me to appreciate them musically, not just historically. So, where should I start?

Not trying to pick on you, but in the age of YouTube and iTunes previews, this is a ridiculous question. Search Kraftwerk on YouTube and watch the top ten song results. That'll probably give you a pretty good image.

I usually get into bands better when I can hear a standard album rather than a greatest hits. It's usually more cohesive. I wanted to know what album could be a good starting point.

I also have trouble appreciating music on Youtube but that's my problem. Still, you're right about me getting at least an idea of what they sound like.

I watched a few live clips on Youtube and decide I'd go see them. Turns they're only four dates/venues for the american tour.

There are times when I can't get "We are the Robots" out of my head.

Free tickets if you wanna swing up to Brew City, Boom.

Then there's always Duran Duran doing their best Kraftwerk:

Supposedly their bassist left the stage in disgust because of this.

Why would they even do this?

Well, you can either start with Talking Heads and get darker, or start with Gary Numan and get lighter.

Somehow it loses something in your translation.

IMO The Mix kinda fills both roles for Kraftwerk - updates their old hits, but is remixed and hangs together fairly well.

Of course, Kraftwerk haven't ever been noted for their wild stylistic variations over their career, which may have something to do with that.

Am I expecting this to be "the greatest concert EVER!"? Nah, but I think it'll be cool to be able to say "I saw Kraftwerk. Suck on that cred, bitches."

Great show - if you can make the Minneapolis or Denver dates, I highly recommend it.

Sony invited me to Coachella -- all expenses paid -- where I could have seen them. I had to pass. Not happy about that.

Ahhh. German music.

This is a a funny thread for me because out of nowhere I got this weird mood to start listening to ATR again for some reason. A couple of minutes ago, I even posted a comment about them on the "Songs That Are Owning You" thread. Thats pure anger, but I've always wondered if they were kinda joking. Whatever, I'm a pure midijunkie.

Kraftwerk: love the nod to them in The Big Lebowski.
