The next speculative bubble...

The current financial system is trapped in a terminal cycle of speculative bubbles, each larger than the last. The next bubble must be large enough to recoup the losses from the housing bubble collapse, and the internet bubble collapse before it, ad infinitum. What are the conditions for the next bubble? What will it be?

This article gives a great rundown of the history of the present crisis, and gives some not very optimistic predictions for the future. If ever you wanted convincing that the financial system is terminally broken (and even if you didn't), this article may well do a good job of it.

The next bubble is here: Gold and energy prices.

Since the 1990's we've seen huge amounts of money chase unrealistic returns in Internet stocks. Then after the Internet Bubble crashed that money went into real-estate. Now people are yabbering about Gold Gold Gold! Not realizing that most Western governments no longer base their currency on Gold, and the price is going up because 1) demand for gold jewelry in Asia is increasing 2)there weren’t that many new mines in production and most of all 3) all the yahoo listening to Talk Radio and buying Gold coins and bullion and burying it in the backyards.

Energy prices are a lot trickier in that demand will continue to vastly outstrip supply for decades. But if something is set to increase in value by 10X and you value it at 1000X you have a bubble. so look for a similar bust for energy at some point.

They will surpress the Euro so it wont overwhlem other currancies. Thats what China does. It'll backfire though cause its like holding a beach ball under the water.

It brings me joy that capitalism may be flattened in my lifetime. In a time where we devour and then move onto the next financial host, we'll run out of markets once consumed at alarming rates.

Uh...and replaced with what? What would you prefer? And why? Capitalism is by no means perfect but it beats the hell out of anything else out there.
