I know that people sounded American, unless they were super rich. Just like Joe the Plumber sounds like he does, and Niles Crane of Fraser sounds like he does.

Adams father was a farmer and his mom couldn't read, and yet Giamatti has chosen an absurd accent for himself.

Look at Daniel Day Lewis's accent in LOTM. He worked with historians and voice coaches on it, and that's what a Massachusetts man would sound like back then.

I'm 23

Just listen to him deliver the line "Liberty will reign in America!". It's incredibly affected, and silly sounding.

I'll go back some time and try to pull out the specific moments and lines I was talking about, but I just got that vibe.

Adams' father may have been a farmer, but Adams was a highly educated man. And nobody actually knows for sure what people sounded like back then, as there were no recordings. The best we can do is extrapolate trends based on vowel shifts and guess. There are no certainties.

Right, I know that, but what we've extrapolated was that Adams would not have sounded like that. And, lets pretend for a moment he would sound like that, Giamatti's delivery is still very awkward and affected

Also, from a site with facts on John Adams:

"President Adams spoke in a high, shrill voice "

I am not complaining about his shrill voice.

So John Adams, from Massachusetts, should sound like Natty Bumpo, who was raised by Indians and whose adventures take place primarily in New York. Got it.

It took place near Albany, an hours drive from Massachusetts. Adams was not raised in Boston.

Again, it's not just that his accent is wrong, it's that Giamatti sounds absurd delivering that dialog. There are some people who can use antiquated speech patterns and come off as if they've been speaking that way their whole life. Ian McShane is one. Giamatti is not

I'm more concerned that there is someone who hates both Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney.
