Things about your DVD collection that you noticed you obsessive fuck

That thread title may only be talking to me, but I catch myself staring at my growing DVD collection quite frequently. I'll notice that I only have two movies that have a certain actor (I only own two Paul Giamatti movies: PRIVATE PARTS and SIDEWAYS), or perhaps I'll notice that I have incomplete movie sagas. It's a silly obsession, but it's not limited to my collection. I'll examine my friends' or acquaintances' movie collections which really tells you a lot about the person. Maybe their scope is limited and there's only romantic comedies, or sci-fi, or only movies that were made after 2000.

That said, in an effort to gaze inside the dark souls of your fellow Chewers, tell us the dumb things you notice about your collection. Other collections are welcome too.

Also, BobClark may not post in this thread.

The problem with my collection is that I have too many still in plastic wrap. Too many that I may never get around to watching. I have cut back in the last year, I was spending too much money on these things. Now I see all these dvds that I rushed out and bought the first week sitting in the $3-$5 sale bins. Irritates the shit out of me.

As of this weekend, the 2 single movies I own that take up the most space by themselves are SIN CITY and WINDTALKERS.

Whoops.

Movie series I felt compelled to complete: The Matrix (I found the whole Ultimate Edition set for $6), Pirates of the Caribbean. Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm street came in sets, so I don't think that counts.
Movie series I did not feel compelled to complete: X-Men, Blade (I only own part 2), Die Hard.
Shitty movie series that are on the top shelf: 3 Faces of Terror, Cannibal Ferox, From Hell (though I still enjoy it), Hell of the Living Dead/Rats, Murder Rock, The Mutilator, Argento's Phantom of the Opera, Resident Evil,
CHUD movies I own : I've not been here long enough to know all of these, but I'll guess Abominable, Behind the Mask, Brick, The Fountain, Hot Fuzz, Oldboy (?), Running Scared, Slither.
Animated Disney movies I own: Lion King, Rescuers, 101 Dalmatians, Jungle Book, Peter Pan, Every Pixar movie but Cars.
Videogame movies I own: Resident Evil
DVDs I have never watched: Barton Fink (though I have seen the movie), The Tenant.
DVDs that I want to throw away: Igby Goes Down, The Punisher (2004).

I'll add:
Movies with Cannibal in the title: 5
Movies with Dead, Die or Death in the title: 32
Movies with American in the title: 6
Movies I own more then one copy of: Aligator, Army of Darkness, Hard Boiled, Evil Dead, Hot Fuzz, Ichi: the Killer, El Topo, Lady Vengeance, The Last Hunter, Let Sleeping Corpses Lie/Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, A Lizard in a Woman's Skin, Bay of Blood, Oldboy, Phantasm 1 and 3, Zu Warriors of the Magic Mountain, Almost every Dario Argento film.

Well, heck, I own BRICK and OLDBOY, too, but left them out of my post. We've gotta get a better definition of a CHUD film.

I was going to start a separate thread on that.

And we don't need to use my categories as a template. You have to make your own. That's what makes it interesting (though Gabe's top shelf stuff is amazing. Phantom of the Opera. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.).

Oh shit, I totally misunderstood 'top shelf'. You meant it literally, I thought you meant it as in "Stuff you don't hide from company".

I alphabetize, so my AMERICAN PIE and AUSTIN POWERS happen to be on the top shelf.

You can add DONNIE DARKO DIRECTOR'S CUT and SERENITY to shit that I want to throw away. I have the 2-disc set of SERENITY, and it's a fucking Baby Huey of a DVD case. 2 discs, no books or inserts, 2.5 inch fucking spine.

I enjoy the idea of Kevin K owning TROLL/TROLL 2 but only watching TROLL 2.

EDIT: I also misunderstood your PHANTOM OF THE OPERA mention. For a second I thought Argento directed the Robert Englund version, which would be an interesting top shelf movie indeed. However, it was too late to correct because I didn't feel like editing my message.

I know. He's missing out on the air guitar.
It can't possibly live up to the amazing Troll 2 dance number in front of the bathroom mirror, but the prospect of air guitar has motivated me to watch Troll this week.
Mine are all alphabetical too, except for Fulci, Argento, and Bava movies, and television series have their own section.

On my actual top shelf there's nothing I'd consider bad...though I'm sure PLENTY of folks would disagree with me when they say ATHF:MFFT and Anthropophagus.

Only 2 Grand L. Bushes here: DIE HARD and STREET FIGHTER. I need me the first two LETHAL WEAPONS.

Hypothetical collection thing: If I purchased TMNT, I would break alphabetization to put it next two the first two TURTLES. I couldn't leave it all alone, with TENACIOUS D: THE COMPLETE MASTERWORKS and the TERMINATOR trilogy keeping it from its family. That's just mean.

Yep. I don't think Pennies is even on DVD. I do also want to get My Favorite Year someday as well.

Holy shit do I suck in that department. I own I think 400 or so DVDs, and only maybe 5 or 6 qualify for that(and 2 of them are Kurosawa). I have maybe 6 more on VHS, but who counts that?

My collection lacks Trainspotting, despite the fact it's my favorite Danny Boyle movie. Yet I own 5 other movies he's directed.

I own every Coen Bros. film except their first 2 on DVD. Why? Damn if I know(especially when it comes to Intolerable Cruelty and the Ladykillers). I do, however, have Blood Simple and Raising Arizona on VHS(and Crimewave too!).

*edit- Fuck, forgot. I don't own the Hudsucker Proxy in any form. Goddamn snapper cases, holding me back!

Woo! I wish there was a prize. I'm pretty proud of that Minority Report mention, by the way.

It's not a DVD collection without Cannibal Apocalypse, City of the Living Dead, The Church, Stage Fright, and The Sect (though that one's hard to find). Apparently he was in Gangs of New York, that was number 8.

Most pointless DVD I own: Full-screen version of LOTR: Fellowship

For the first part of this thread, I wondered why nobody felt compelled to complete the DIE HARD series, which is a great series.

Then I remembered the existence of LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD.

Thanks a lot, assholes.

I own The Transporter 2, but not The Transporter.
# of HD-DVDs: 5 (My 5 free ones still haven't arrived)

I have more DVDs scored by Howard Shore than any other composer.

Not counting TV actors (the MST3K guys top the list thanks to my obsession with that show), Bruce Campbell and Steve Buscemi are the most represented actors in my collection, tied with nine a piece.

Steven Spielberg tops the list of directors with 13 films, but Tarantino, John Carpenter, Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi and Terry Gilliam are right there nipping at his heels with six each.

I have no desire to complete the Spider-Man or Pirates of the Caribbean sagas.

I should really sell Blade: Trinity

ETA: CHUD movies owned: Oldboy, The Fountain, Children of Men, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Shaun of the Dead, Pan's Labyrinth, three Broken Lizard flicks

I own more Criterions and high-brow dramas, than I own comedies, and if I get one, it's usually as a gift.
I own Red, but not White and Blue
I own . . . *quietly, with head down* . . The Postman
I own Road to Perdition, but not Millers Crossing (this shall change soon, I promise)
I own Driving Miss Daisy
I own Fanny and Alexander (the criterion) and I still haven't watched it
I have Season's two through eight of The Simpsons, but not Season One
