Sometimes, there's nothing better than a button mashing shred-a-thon. I hope this is one of them.

March 25? Damn that really did come out of nowhere. I remember reading a preview, Game Informer, maybe EGM, last summer and this is the first I heard of it since.

Shame it came out of nowhere, since I have MLB2K8, Army of Two, and this afternoon Vegas 2 to get through still.

Wonder how this compares to that Conan game from a while back. I liked that one well enough, but glad I only rented the thing since it was super short.

Bring on super gorey hack-n-slashers!
Looks like this game is right up my alley, as I love Norse mythology AND hack and slash games. In fact, while playing the original God of War, I remarked to my buddy that I wished there was a similar game involving Norse mythology. Well, looks like I'll finally be getting it. Now I just need to pick up a next gen console so I can play the damn thing.

Picked up conan for half price. Enjoying the hell out of it but this viking game came outta nowhere. I'm keeping my eye on the reviews and if the ps3 version is rated well and is just as good as the 360 version, I'll be picking it up. Read a preview report that said the ps3 version's resolution was lower than the 360's. Which I hope will be rectified on release but know it won't be.

It's made by the Total War guys isn't it?

Spartan: Total Warrior, more specifically.

Anyone grab this yet? Just got my copy... going to dive in.
Ooooo...let me know how it is. I really want to check this out, but have no idea when I'll be able to. Damn my bank account for not having enough money for me to buy a next gen console!

I rented it last night, but opted to wrap up the last 2 levels of Condemned 2 (and then get the gold medals on the ones I missed) before I dove into this game.. so it's up to bat tonight.

I'm only like an hour into this, but so far I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Always kind of dug Norse mythology.. and I like that this is more of a free-roaming game as opposed to the extremely linear Conan. I think the water at the beach right at the start of the game might be some of the best ocean effects I've seen.

Plus, your health regenerates after a few seconds. I love games that do that.

Will have to see what all this 'army building' amounts too..

IGN was bitching about mad slow-down in the larger battles later on, which sort of deflates my interest a bit.
I actually flipped a coin today outside a game shop to decide whether to pick this up. I came up tails so I jogged on. I can't believe I actually entertained the thought of getting both this and Dark Sector today. I hate being flush with cash during these "no real must haves" periods in game releases. I always make bad choices. I'm looking in your direction, Army of Two.

So, as a person who enjoyed the hell out of God of War and liked Spartan: Total Warrior quite a bit, would this be a renter or a buyer?
I've done an army battle, probably like 40 some odd guys on screen, plus me going ape shit with ice magic attacks.. didnt notice any slowdown. I wonder how big these battles get?

Still really enjoying this, a few hours in now. Seems like it's going to be mighty short though.

Zero - I think it's going to be too short of a game to justify a full-price purchase. I'm already wondering if there is a second island or not, I've cleared out most of this one in only 3 hours. I think I might purchase it once it drops down to like the 20 dollar range and go through it again, unless I encounter some massive issues in the later parts of the game.

The combat isn't nearly as complex as something like God of War, never played Spartan to compare.. but it is good and gorey, and the achievements flow as fast as the blood.

Yeah that was the kind of vibe I was getting from this one too. It was a close one, like I said. I was a coin toss away from picking it up, but I'll keep an eye on the bargain bin.

I guess for now I'll just content myself to finish off Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, DMC4 and that 3rd playthrough of Mass Effect that I've been putting off. The money's probably better spent on Rock Band and Mass Effect DLC anyways.

Yeah, it's decent, but doesn't seem to have much to it. Definitely fun enough for a rent, though. If all goes well I'll have a MCP review up by tomorrow or Saturday.

Yeah, like Conan I'm glad this was just a rental, at least for full price. I do like this a lot more than Conan though.

So I guess there are three islands, I just beat the first one. That'll make the game quit a bit longer in length, at least for a player like me who likes to explore every nook and cranny of the map before starting the big events that end the level. The huge war I had at the end of the level did give me some slowdown during the times when I would look out over 200 soldiers smashing each other up, but that's almost to be expected with that many characters on screen. It wasnt game breaking or anything, and once my camera got focused in on me killing people it cleared up.

It's an old fashioned hack-em-up with some pretty slick graphics and average length.. thats about all I was looking for from the title. And thankfully they keep the quicktime colored button mashing puzzles down to a minimum, unlike that damn conan game where you had to hit 14 buttons in order for every boss fight.

Lookin foward to the MCP review!

Yeah, that game was quite a damn bit longer than I thought it'd be!

But here's my review- http://chud.com/articles/articles/14...ARD/Page1.html

Great Review. Loved the Viking facts.
Solid review Alex, and agreed with Tati - the Viking facts section was hilarious (especially pulling apart the viking's prison with your bare hands while they still have all their weapons).
Man this game really is a shitload of fun. I can see what Alex is saying about the inherent repetition of the game, but even halfway through the final island I'm still being impressed by the set design and sheer scope of the game. Hiding behind a rockface as a two hundred strong patrol of Legion walk past never gets old.

Tescos had it for £20 today. I was so close to buying it. They also had condemned 2 for the same price.

I never thought PS3 games would get this cheap.

It's the kind of game that once you beat you'll never have to go back to it again, but it sure is damn fun while you're playing it.

Absolutely true and if you do that playthrough on hard you can net an easy 1000 gamerscore. You know... if you're an achievement whore. I played through twice, once on normal and once on hard and the difficulty was not significantly different.

First game I ever 1000/1000 and having squeezed out pretty much everything the game had to offer in under a week, I traded it in for GTA 4. I quite enjoyed it while I was playing it, but I have absolutely no desire to revisit it. I don't regret buying it, and when I traded it back I got a decent price for ir, but this game is pretty much the definition of a "wait til you can get it for under $30 used" game.
