To me this is kind of like the difference between laughing and cheering when a teenager gets gutted in a horror movie and having the same reaction when looking at Abu Ghraib prison photos or videos of beheadings. One is real, the other is not.

It's important to know the difference, I feel like right now we are one step away from making fun of little kids with down syndrome.

I'd wager that some people on this board already have.

This being the internet, you know it's happening.

So ignorance and stupidity is only funny when non-stupid and ignorant people do it? When did this rule come into play?
We aren't talking about ignorance and stupidity, we're talking about autism.
We're talking about a guy standing outside retail shops hoping playing GBA will attract a girlfriend.

Big difference between lacking common sense or being uneducated and having a developmental disorder of the brain.

Which sounds an awful lot like he has problems with his ability to communicate and interact with others. It's like making fun of a Down Syndrome kid for talking funny and having weird facial features.

What he said.
the mentally challenged offer limitless entertainment possibilities.

Be free. Embrace it.

This guy supplants Full Life Consequences as my new favorite "thing on the internet.
What he's doing is absurd. There may be an element of tragedy to it, but there may be an element of tragedy to people lacking common sense or being uneducated. Every time you see a Youtube video where dumb shit happens and you giggle, do you question the mental faculties of the people involved?

If you really can't see the difference between a guy with a very obvious mental disability and a Jackass video I don't know what to tell you.

And he only likes white chocolate!

Oh, and as somebody who has worked extensively with the mentally handicapped, even beginning to compare a high-functioning autistic with a Downs Syndrome kid is beyond offensive - certainly WAY more offensive than laughing at this goofball. It betrays an ignorance and major condescension.
Steve-O's got serious mental problems. They just put him in for it.

Also, there's a difference between laughing at something that is absurd and laughing at something because it's different.
Autism aside, he's creepy.

I think he's bi-polar.
I don't care if people think I am mean for laughing at this guy. I have known many people with his same disorder (or very similar) and some choose to use it to be fucking assholes or creeps all the time. When you call them out on it, they suddenly pull the DISABLED card out and hide behind it.

This guy's behavior in public should be cause for concern. He's a racist and a religious nut, courtesy of his parents, I'm sure, but let's not all think of this person as someone who's not fully aware of what they are doing. Much like the anonymity of the internet allows to say whatever they want without consequence, he seems to be using his condition as an excuse to stalk women.

Autistic kids are usually pretty rad deep down, or sometimes not even that deep down.

This dude ain't rad.
I can't find this funny. It's just depressing to me. Sure he might be a creep but he's really screwed being a creep with autism. That just seems sad to me. You know that he has a real long shot at finding some kind of happiness, outside of My Little Pony toys and weird cartoon drawings.
That's pretty fucking funny.

That's pretty much how I look at it. My mom was a special ed teacher for 25 years, and I've known lots of absolutely awesome autistic kids that she taught. This guy is a raging asshole on top of being a creep.

People need to remember that autism isn't retardation (at least mid to high functional. Low function could be equated to mental retardation, I guess, but it's something else entirely.). If you were to give this guy an IQ test, he'd likely test in the above average range.

And despite the lack of social understanding and awareness that is a hallmark of autism, don't for one second think this guy doesn't know what he's doing. He's well fucking aware of everything he does.

On some level, I guess this might be a failing of his teachers and parents, because a lot of things you and I take for granted (e.g. not being creepy and randomly asking strange girls for their phone number), might not be second nature for someone with autism. But they can be taught how social situations work. Sure, it might be a facade (at least to some degree) to them, but they are aware enough and more than smart enough to be taught how to act in a public setting. Obviously this guy never got that.

I saw we all chip in and get this kid a hooker.

I actually spent 20 minutes writing a long ass post to this effect. And you nailed it in two sentences. What's that saying about brevity?

You know how much it's gonna cost to find a non-ethnic hooker under 230 lbs who isn't a chain-smoking alcoholic? Especially since 58 minutes of the first hour will be spent with him crying? Screw that.
Perhaps if we all went down to our local whorehouse and paced in front of it with a sign we might find a hooker that meets his standards.
This is why the "I'm going to hell for laughing at this" category was invented. And if you say that you've never uttered that phrase to yourself, you're full of shit. And the reason you've said that to yourself is that you know that what you are laughing at has an underpinning of tragedy to it. As Andre said, it's the absurdity of the situation that is being laughed at, not the disorder. It's the same principle behind any kind of sick/off-color/gallows humor. You're not going to just laugh at the expense of just any tragedy, it's the ones that are unfortunately surrounded with bizarre and extremely absurd circumstances that may elicit a giggle or two.
It's all fun and games until someone has autism -
then it's fucking hilarious.

Oh I'm going to hell for this.

/ for the record, I do have honest respect for any autistic. Met a bunch, fascinating guys. Some actually have incredible Rain Man math skills.

The discovery of Chris Chan is all well and good but what about Duke Fleed's MySpace? Facebook? Fan Fiction? Slash? He has to have some of his own. Will we ever know the truth?

A decent amount of the developmentally-disabled population suffer from multiple disorders and from what I've read from this guy I would be surprised if he was just autistic. With that said, it is also a common problem for higher functioning DD kids to grow up around shit heels who poke fun at them mercilessly and do everything in their power to help them develop their additional odd quirks.

We don't know this guy's full story and none of us knows where his disability starts or ends in regard to his behaviors. So if you are comfortable pointing your finger at the guy with autism and laughing, own it (as many of you have), but please don't use the "higher functioning" explanation as a justification to do so because you are talking out your ass.

I would have thought liking that fetishisation of weaponry would have been a symptom of autism.
I've only ever really taken autism and apspergers to be mental illnesses once they attain a certain degree of severity. Up until then, they're just labels for certain personality traits.
In the case of this guy, those are worrying traits. With most, they aren't.

Sometimes I think people are far too ready to stamp everything as a disability.

If this were a discussion thread debating whether or not this guy is really autistic you might have a point, but it isn't. I definitely agree that there is a disheartening trend where kids are being labeled as having "a touch of..." something as an easy answer to explain why they act out in class and home.

All I know is that the lead singer of the Vines has asperger's, so I figure anyone with asperger's makes bad music.

Also, this guy would be funny if it was 1997 and I was looking at it on my Netscape 3.0 browser and also I was 11 again.

Spielberg has Asperger's. Probably the biggest example that being diagnosed with that shit is not an automatic blueprint for fail.

Way to miss the point completely. No one's saying that the scope of disability is the same or even similar. But you've gone out of your way to ridicule a person for actions that could very well be the result of his known developmental disorder. How is this any different from mocking someone with a different disorder when they display the symptoms of that disorder? No one here knows the guy or the real extent of his disorder. For me, that means erring on the side of common decency in not mocking the guy. Your long history here makes it clear what side you fall on.

And I agree with what tom wrote:

So, are people really saying that this guy is actually a hyper-intellectual mastermind who is pretending to be mentally disabled in order to sexually harass the women within 20 miles of Ruckersville, Virginia with impunity?

I dunno, maybe if I knew the guy I'd think he was a creep, but as fucked in the head as one has to be to make a web page proclaiming oneself as a 26 year-old male devotee of Yu-Gi-Oh and My Little Pony, to just pretend to be one because you think it'll bring the ladies running doesn't exactly sell you as the picture of mental health either.

As for the tard filled subject matter of this thread, fucking phenomenal.

I love it when someone like Devin trots out the "I've worked with Mentally Handicapped people" line, especially when he has a distinct history of abusing the word retarded. It's like someone dropping racist jokes all over the place because "they have black friends". Just admit you don't mind being kind of a piece of shit when it comes to that stuff. I have more respect for people who don't try to hide it.
