Super Mario Bros (1993)

According to the Mayans, the eternal end of the world is set for December 2012 - but in 1993 mankind clearly begged for earlier extinction. After earlier efforts with HOWARD THE DUCK and SUBURBARN COMMANDO, mankind unleashed

SUPER MARIO BROS: THE MOVIE.

Who dared to pay for this? Show yourself!
Attempting to watch this on Youtube made me realise that a simple comedy with Bob Hoskins as a plumber might actually work.
Shame, really.

As Roxette says "Its simply unreal."
Let's all sing along now.

I literally forced my parents to see this with me in theaters over some movie they wanted to see. You know- some gay boring movie drama for adults! GAAAAAAY!

YOU'RE FUCKED FOREVER
I remember when this came out I had the choice of either seeing it or The Sandlot. Despite being a Nintendo (and Mario) fanatic, I chose Sandlot. Still one of the best decisions of my movie-going life.
Still waiting for the sequel that was set up in the end scene.
To this day, I never understood why the Bomb-omb had Reebok sneakers.
Or why a giant lizard took the form of Dennis Hopper in the process of dying his hair.

To be fair, it DOES bear repeating.
Also was given the choice of seeing this or something else. I think I ended up watching Swiss Family Robinson on VHS instead. Great choice.
93? Really? Wow. It feels like it was just yesterday....
Samantha Mathis, where have you gone?
She was on Lost last season.

In Season 3? What role was she playing?

Ben's school teacher for five fucking seconds.
I won tickets to this off the radio when I was in 6th grade. Half way through the movie I knew it was a piece of shit, so I asked my dad to take me to the arcade instead. Best decision ever.
Seriously, my friend and I were discussing this the other night at a pub;

Who the fuck thought a 2D side-scroller about a plummer defeating evil turtles and such by jumping on their heads was a good idea to adapt into a movie?

Contra, okay, maybe, because it would be a fucking insane movie(hopefully) with huge guns and even bigger enemies, but.... Mario?

The thought process behind the decision to make this movie stills boggles my mind, merchandise notwithstanding.
At least the movie bomb-omb'd, or we'd have ended up with the Mario Bros Trilogy Collectors Edition 5 disc boxset sometime this month..

I saw this movie twice when it came out....yeah what of it?

Was it worth $8 to see Dennis Hopper devolve into a puddle of goo?
I was nine and thought the music that was played when they slid down the ice tube was the greatest thing ever. It wasn't like I was harrassing my parents to take me to see The Piano.
Actually, I like this movie precisely because it's so fucking insane.

I'm surprised that nobody woke up halfway through production, saw what they were making, and then promptly quit. Did this ruin anybody's career? I mean Hoskins, Leguizamo, Hopper, Mathis, they all still did stuff after right?
I believe I had read somewhere Hoskins did so he could remodel his kitchen. So there ya go.
Power boots...
The only good thing about this movie is Mathis. Although she was hotter in Pump up the Volume and more naked. Well that and the fact that the "de-evo" gun is a painted super scope 6. I thought that was awesome when I was a kid.
Yeah I remember my dad telling me the whole deal with Samantha Mathis and how she was nude in Pump up the Volume and all this other stuff. He's got this encylopedia-esque knowledge of female nudity. A Mr. Skin before there was one, if you will.

She was the first celeb I saw topless in a movie. True story.

Something to tell your kids.
She was in John Woo's Broken Arrow as well. The one good thing in that movie.

Na, Travolta did worse. Broken Arrow is not a Hard Target, but no Windtalkers either.
No one has mentioned the elevator scene yet. Astounding.

The uncredited Roland Joffé was pretty fucked after. That might have been more The Scarlett Letter though.

And the credited Max Headroom director team thing haven't done shit since.
Yeah, but did it stick to them? I don't recall anybody saying, "damn those Max Headroom alumni directors. They made this movie suck."
I was six when the movie came out. I have no idea.

But they were replaced, so I'm sure a helluva lot of blame landed on their shoulders.

Plus they did the Meg Ryan/Quaid D.O.A.
Fuck that movie.
From the first part on youtube: "i love this movie, granted it is different from mario, it's a great movie."
I had the adapted novelization from the movie. With pictures. Read that book like 10 times when i was 10.

Yes, i suck at life.
I had that book too. After my nine year-old self processed about 60-70% of Jurassic Park (the Crichton novel, not the novelization), this was my next book. Any intelligence or reading skills I picked up from reading Jurassic Park got lost somewhere between Scapelli's introduction and the mattress sequence.

Ain't got no water anywhere,
The food is bad and so's the air!
Got no resources, just a great big stupa (?)
All because of the evil king Koopa

Great song. Great movie. But in all seriousness, not all of the movie is awful. The Silvestri score is dope. It's well shot. Hoskins and Leguizamo have good chemistry. The car chase scene is fun. Um...
THE FUCKING ELEVATOR SCENE geez
Well....

Double Dragon was better.

*blinks*

....

Goddamn I feel dirty.
C'mon now. Like you didn't want to see the Goombas swaying side to side to elevator music. That's just good storytelling right there.
It has to be the most crowd-pleasing scene of the entire movie. Good stuff.

You're not alone. I've got the Novelization as well (A Collector. Remember?) Haven't read it in 5 yrs though.

Addicting.

Reminds me of this famous scene:

Turtles II: Yeah... yeah, yeah...

That's a little to soon.
I saw it on TV once. I have a great visual memory but I honestly can't remember a single scene from it. Nothing at all. When I try all I can conjure up is a strange purple fog with sounds of sucking and clawing coming from behind it.

Something tells me I should stop trying.
The one thing* that bothered me about this movie was the Goombas. Why did they have tiny heads and huge bodies? It's the opposite in the games!

*Yeah, I know. Only one thing?
