Battlefield: Bad Company - Page 2

Yeah, not sure why it was taking so long to download. Took a couple of hours for me...

That single player level is new, I haven't seen it before. Might be the first one in the game. Not much to it.... but Oasis is so fucking good.

Anyone thrown off by the vehicle controls? After playing GTA for 40 something hours I can't get back in the mindset of using the left trigger for gas, left bumper for reverse.

Yeah, it was embarrassing. Every time I'd get in a vehicle and start trying to drive it'd be an adventure. And then some dude from my squad would get in the back of the humvee or the jeep and I'd feel like more of a jackass for running into a tree.

I will say that I'm disappointed with the destructive environments though. From what I played of the Gold Crate games or whatever, there are still these little indestructible boxes around the crates and by the time you get to the last one it's just completely full of enemies and basically impossible to get to without getting the crap sniped out of you.

It is kind of interesting how guys only show up on your radar/hud if they have been injured by someone on your side recently.
It's not that there's indestructible boxes around the crates, it's that the crates are tough as shit to blow up. It's pretty rough when everyone's gunning for one box.... sometimes it's easier to hang back and hit it with explosive rounds.

Oh and the radar works with line of sight. If one of your teammates sees an enemy, you see him on the radar. It's why the characters sometimes yell out "Sniper spotted!" "Light Tank!" and other shit. And it's also why the recon class' sensor grenade's a huge help when defending. Throw a couple near the crates and you can tell where the fuckers are sneaking in from.

Thanks for the advice. I just got pissed a couple times because I'd see some guys kind of moving around in camouflage and in the bushes and I was staring at them through the sniper scope but they didn't show up as 'red' until I actually shot them.

I was trying to hang back and use a rocket launcher and clear out the building at one point but I kept getting shot in the face by the same guy and it started to piss me off.

The download did take forever. I played the "easy" single player level (not sure if the normal is the same) since I really didn't know the controls yet and was hoping for a decent walk through and the easy did a pretty good job of spoonfeeding me what I needed.

I then jumped right into a multiplayer game, and it took me almost all of the game to have a decent idea what I was doing. I was a Defender, but I was having a hard time figuring out what all of the symbols on the HUD were (the blue triangles for the gold crates for instance) and I was mostly running around blind trying to figure things out while getting shot in the back a lot.

I found a tank, started driving it around (and yes, I kept pulling the right trigger because GTA owns me), found an enemy, felt like I shot him with approximately 20 tank shells and ran him over once without him dying. He then launched a rocket into me and killed me. I was unhappy. I figured I just wasn't figuring out the tank shelling aiming properly. So when I respawned, HE was in a tank and I had the rocket launcher. I launched 3 rockets into him, he spun and killed me in one shot.

Really, most of my multiplayer experience went like that. Most of it was due to my complete inexperience (I didn't know about the sensor grenades until Alex mentioned them here) but I did put together a nice run of keeping a single crate alive with the use of the shotgun against multiple attackers (the message "YOU ARE THE LAST MAN STANDING" does a good job of getting the juices flowing).

So far the only complaint I have in the multiplayer is the complete impossibility of seeing where a sniper is firing from. The game I was in had a decent sniper and the Defenders were getting headshot over and over. There was no way (that I could see) to know where the shots were coming from. You don't get a damage indicator on a shot that kills you. He finally missed a headshot on me which left me with 3 health but told me which direction the shot had been fired from so I looped around behind him and shotgun him from point blank.

Wow. Multiplayer is fun. It's got that Battlefield feel, but mixed with the "fall back and defend" gameplay that Quake Wars had (PC version, anyway). Very fun. Except for that fucking artillery. Thanks again for the code, Alex. Single was ok, but didn't hold a candle to the multi.
I had the same issue with it not showing up in my demos at first. I just selected it from the Recently Downloaded list. This, this morning it appeared in my demos list.

Thank you, Alex, for the code. It's nice to get hooked up with a free game. And yes, this is a blast to play. It does seem like just more of the same, like Modern Combat, but that's not a bad thing. I like the blowing up the crates gametype, a nice twist on territories.

If you're looking for something different than BF:MC, I don't think you're going to find anything, yet. Of course, this is only the demo.
Finally got my colonel rank and unlocked the new weapon. Mostly because no one knew to look out for landmines. They really are the best thing to unlock for defense....

Today it goes live for everyone, but guess that's all of the demo for me.... don't want to burn myself out on it. See you guys in a few weeks in the real deal.
I'm downloading that fucker right now.

Hope it was worth the wait.
Belated thanks for the code.

I gave this a good 3-4 hours over a couple of different nights. What a frustratingly mixed bag. It's so close to being legendary, but the little flaws end up irking the hell out of me.

The sound design is so cool and chaotic, but at the same time becomes numbing and overwhelming.

The level design is mostly great, but you can barely pick out soldiers on foot. The destroyable terrain and buildings are great, but character animation and hit detection are just terrible. There's a great variety of wepons, but they all lack the solid feel and punch of COD 4's firearms. Vehicles are fun, when you can actually control them. Etc. Am I the only one? It just couldn't pull me away from COD for very long.

Weirdly, it made me wish for an updated console version of Tribes with the Frostbite engine.
Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam both had excellent hit detection and satisfying gunplay. It was tuned from BF2 onwards to be more "realistic" and therefore less satisfying. It has carried over into the console versions it seems.
Hmm. That's odd. I was enjoying kicking the opposing team's ass when the sound cut out. Quit back to XMB to find it's not my TV. Anyone else had this?

The single player was mediocre, and the hit detection (being new-battlefield-shit) is annoying - but fuck me if the atmosphere isn't brilliant.
I keep having problems getting into a game, then when I do, after a couple minutes I get signed out of the PSN. It was fun the two games I played before I got signed out.
I played this a bit last night. I spent more time on the "wait to respawn" screen than actually playing. And when I did get a chance to play, it was only to walk around for five minutes slowly trying to make it to the battle because I'd always respawn by some douchebag playing as a sniper, miles away from the action. And, naturally, I'd die within seconds of getting near the fight. Not impressed.
Don't hate it cause you suck! You know you can choose to respawn either at the base or behind a teammate, right? Safer to start back at base, where there's vehicles and stuff.

I don't have a problem controlling the vehicles, at least after getting reacquainted with the left trigger controls. It actually works very well for allowing you to move and shoot at the same time.
I'm sure if I played it with a group that actually communicated or didn't want to play as a sniper the entire time, it would have been a lot of fun. Basically, a Chewer game would be great.

That is odd. Every time I've played this, no one, and I mean no one, else on my team communicated with each other.
Ditto. No one ever talked on the team i was on.

With some good team tactics this game could be decent. Without, it basically becomes a Call of Duty one man army type of deal.
I could hear voice comms on mine, but they were pretty faint considering I didn't have my headset on. Think it was just coincidence you guys didn't get team chatterly.

It's grown on me so much. I played whole games as different classes just to see how the engine worked. It's quite generous to snipers. The support gunner is my favourite though, fixing up tanks, healing mofos and generally giving me plenty of ammo to waste. Shame it didn't tank-bust too, but I guess it'd be too powerful then.
That gun you use to fix tanks? It can be used to take them apart as well. Just make sure to run alongside the enemy tank so it can't run you over...

That's what I'm loving the game so much- there's so much more strategy than appears at first glance, especially everyone starts unlocking the new weapons like mortar strikes and such. I still haven't figured out how to use that tagging gun that the Specialist has. Guess you need a buddy playing as Demolition to make the most out of that.

And you guys haven't even seen the incredible medal system that's in place in the final version... there's so many awards that you can win for various actions.

Oh, and the only problem? If you guys haven't noticed you can only talk to the people in your "squad". Usually it's only a few people... and it's going to suck if we get Chud matches going. I'm not sure why this is the case, but I think it has to do with saving bandwith for all the crazy shit going on.

I was fixing a tank i'd just jumped out of when an enemy hopped in trying to steal it and it tore him apart. Wonderous getting that little tool icon next to the kill.

But no, the tank-buster as in a rocket launcher of any sort. It's terrifying being a support gunner and seeing a tank coming straight for you.
The only thing I've noticed that seems overbalanced is choppers. For the life of me, I've never been able to take of of those bastards down. Probably what the sniper add on is for.

As for that, Alex, I believe you lock onto armor and a jet drops a bomb on it. Or something.
I've shot one down with a support gun - I think you just have to lead your targets a bit more.

I can't fly them for the life of me though, and i'm a master of battlefield's chopper piloting. Think it's just getting used to the console controls.

The rocket launcher in this game is a horrible tease. It gives you a false sense of security that just isn't warranted. Mostly it seems to just get the attention of the tanks it isn't killing.
Yes. It does.

I now hate this game. Yesterday I was on a rampage and managed numero uno in almost every game. Today, whilst still in first place - second place had half my score and we got raped. I was swearing so much. My throat kills. I'm glad I wasn't miked up.

You really need a good team or you're fucked. I think Metal Gear will be my purchase for this month. Will make me less angry.

Now This Is The Way To Lampoon A Beloved Franchise

Heh "Special Military barrel". Now that was a good little parody.
Oh, yes. Well played, Bad Company. Although, not really competing franchises, like GTA and SR.
Still, it was clearly some good natured ribbing.
Why the hell would he hide in a barrel?

Gold.
Oh no. Not complaining. Just a thought. Still funny.
Brilliant!
Fantastic clip.
Win a copy! I'll let the winners know by Monday morning in case anyone's getting this day one.

Also, just to let you guys know- I'm about 8 hours into the single player game, and it's a helluva lot better than we hoped. Still, getting a little repetitive and nowhere near as fun as the multiplayer. It's as expected, pretty much. I can't wait till the servers start to get packed and I can play online with you fuckers (there's only a handful of people with the game now, haven't been able to find a match)
That's good news. After the DEMO, I was beginning to worry that I was going to be spending $60 on a two mode multiplayer game.
Two new spoofs. One on Gears Of War and another on Rainbow Six. Dont care much for the Gears one but the R6 one is great.

I can't decide whether to get this for PS3 or 360.
The Achievements are pretty damn fun to get. They encourage destruction... the hardest one by far is the one where you have to use the laser designator to take down a helicopter. Tough aiming that bomb when the copter is flying around and dodging you...
Hopefully that Specialist achievement wont glitch for those who played the demo.
Oh, you'll have to level up all over again. Seems to go a lot faster, though... only took me a few battles to hit the 5th rank.

And my God, every fucking level is a blast.
I guess my brain is late to the party sensing the irony in EA releasing a game called Bad Company.

The spoofs are better than the game itself. I had a fantastic multiplayer session yesterday despite the terrible hit detection. Support gunner all the way. Fixing up tanks, carving up troops - healing friendlies. It's a points frenzy for a defender in a good spot.

I just wish it wasn't built like BF2. So, so much.
After the glowing Gamespy review, I think I might pick this up tomorrow. Kind of depends on if my Gamefly orders come in today or not.
weird, that link to kotaku with the other two spoof vids is FILLED with negative comments, while you guys praise it a lot. Is it that much of a mixed bag?
Yep
I have done a complete 180 on this. After giving the demo more time, I now love this game, because for every little thing it gets wrong, it gets two or three just right. Buying it.

I still wish for a COD style killcam though. Sniping assholes almost ruin the game when you can't see where they are hiding.
Agreed about the killcam. Although I've grown to love having to hunt down snipers on the battlefield. Man, I love the multiplayer in this game and can't wait till I get some buddies on it.

Here's the CHUD review- http://chud.com/articles/articles/15...ANY/Page1.html
post #98 of 150
I agree with pretty much everything in that review. Sound work is excellent, the multiplayer certainly is the highlight (as with any Battlefield game)

However, 8 maps and one gametype is unacceptable - fine, they're addressing it with a further one. But that's still poor, even with the focus on the single player experience.
alex, you're glowing review almost made me go buy this immediately after work today...almost.

im going to wat to hear a few more comments from other chewers before i take the plunge...i really want to hear about the multiplay (hint hint)
OK, the review sold me Alex. Is this shipping today, or actually going to be in stores when I get off work?
