Patrick Ripoll - Praise the Lord! (2008)

I just finished my new lo-fi folk album, Praise the Lord!, today. It's very very low-fidelity, mostly recorded live using Windows Sound Recorder, so if you aren't a fan of early Mountain Goats/Daniel Johnston/stuff like that, you won't like this, so I wouldn't even bother. But for anyone else, I'm fairly proud of the album (the songwriting, if not the production quality) go ahead check it out, free to download or to stream online.

I will give it a listen. Liked your last two albums quite a bit, so I'm looking forward to this.

Okay, I've listened to this twice, so here are a few, off the top of my head, comments.

Favorite songs: Wafting, Second Place, Wilderness

I also really like "Waking", but it's reminding me so much of another song that my brain, with all its trying to figure out what song it recalls, distracts me while I listen to it.

What inspired the gospel/spiritual theme that runs throughout this? Is it more of an ironic comment or is it inspired by the need to break free from the some of the darkness that also weaves in and out?

I like this one even more than "Open All Winter", I think. I'll give you some more thoughtful feedback after I've listened to it a few more times.

Nicely done, Patrick.

ETA: Miss Me When I'm Gone is also very catchy, and I love that sigh at the end...

The album cover came before anything else. I used to randomly make album covers out of photos I took when I was bored, so I found this photo, wrote the title, which I meant ironically cuz I look so fucking depressed in the picture, on it in MS Paint. Then I decided this should be my next folk album.

So that inspired a lot of the songwriting topics and material. I had a strong Catholic upbringing, so no matter what I believe now, God, or my belief (or lack of belief) in a god, has shaped a huge part of my life. I used to believe in God, things had an order, made sense, a purpose. Now that I don't and I don't know what to do with myself, I don't have a higher power or order to fall back on. It's a part of my depression, my life, whatever. Not every song carries a spiritual theme, but I found the contrast between the rejoicing and the depression interesting.

At least, that's the most pretentious thing I could think of just now. Give me a couple minutes to go back and sprinkle the phrases "nihilistic", "existential crisis" lightly throughout, so the bullshit can really shine.

The music sounds good, but the vocals don't really work for me.

What kind of mic did you use?

Microphone that's built into my laptop, right next to the fan.

That's pretty rad dude, I was first introduced to Daniel Johnston through the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston...dude was bizarre but I dig his music. You don't sound alot like him though, your stuff here is alot more sophisticated and coherent. Also it sounds a hell of alot better and some of these tracks are pretty catchy. So keep it up, and possibly consider removing the download for free option in the near future.

Music is good...but your progressions are somewhat simple, vocals are killer, sounds sort've like a mix of Marc Bolan and John Popper with some other stuff.

I haven't quite finished the album, yet...I'm listening all the way through while at work and I'm at "Second Place" right now.

Tonight has been a piece of shit night as far as problems here at the hotel (both elevators shut down with people in them and it took hours to get them opened up again) and I've had a massive headache since about midnight or so...but since I've been streaming your album, I've been feeling a lot better. I don't really know why, since you scream your brains out half the time and the poor little speaker on this work terminal wants to explode, but this stuff is making the headache go away and I've actually been able to finish up some of my reports without wanting to rip someone's face off.

I dunno if that was your intended reaction, but it was mine.

So thanks for posting this stuff. I like it .

Patrick, ever listen to Ween?

I've heard Quebec. Loved it. It's my kind of style parody ("It's Gonna Be A Long Night" and "If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All)" are so fucking hilarious, every goddamned time.

At least, I assume that album is (mostly) style parody. It's hard to tell sometimes, but it seems played for comedy.

Why, does my music remind you of Ween?

Why does EVRY thread you start have your name in it? You are self-important beyond belief.

Google hits, dude. Duhr.

How is Warrior Angel back?

Patrick, some of the stuff you did on Fruity Loops reminds me of Ween. My favorite period is Pure Guava to 12 Golden Country Greats.
