"Mortal Kombat 8"

Don't throw objects at me, but my rabid fandom of MK is convincing me to start a thread on this, although there's not much to report. At this point, all we know is that MK8 will be a complete restart of the story/franchise, with little to no classic characters (though I think Hell will freeze over before Scorpion and Sub-Zero are left out of another MK game) making an appearance. The game is slated to be released later this year (announced during a recent press release) and will be running on the Unreal engine.

So here's what we got.

Anyone who is much of a fan of MK and follows its news knows that creator Ed Boon runs his own updates and cryptic messages off of his site, Noob.com. Recently, it started being active again, and there's currently a countdown happening toward April 17th at roughly 3pm.

Here's what's happened in the past. Feel free to let your not-even-close speculations fly. I'm guessing the 888 is referring to August 8th, 2008.

Quote:
Update – March 9, 2008 – ]{0MBAT here. Looks like another "o" has been replaced with a moon; and there is now a countdown on the site as well. It looks like something spectacular is going to happen by April 17, 2008!

Update – March 12, 2008 – ]{0MBAT again. It seems that the period has now been replaced by the dragon logo! There's still another "o" in the logo, who knows what'll happen next? The sun, maybe? Thanks to Major_kenny for this tidbit!

Update – March 15, 2008 – ]{0MBAT once again. Ed's still at it -- this time, beneath the Noob.com logo, appears the mysterious number: 238,868. This is printed with a line going from the Earth to the moon, indicating the actual distance from the Earth to the moon: 238,868 miles.

Update – March 22, 2008 – A few more updates to the site have been made. An image of a pair of eyes has been placed below the counter while above it now reads the word "Answers", presumably indicating the date represented by the end of the counter will give us more information. A "pulse" line has also been placed between the Earth and Moon images that represent the "O"s.

Update – March 24, 2008 – There are now pictures of animals on the bottom of his web page. Though seemingly random, there is a hidden message within. The animals listed are Rhinoceros, Armadillo, Gorilla, and Elephant. Astute followers will notice the hidden word rage, made up by the order these animals are presented in.

There was a Mortal Kombat 5, 6, and 7?
That would be Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon, Dean.

There's a part of me that will always have a soft spot for this series, and I'm curious to see what Boon does in this gen with a clean slate. At the very least, that clean slate ensures it won't be nearly as sloppy as Armageddon.

Unreal 3 engine? really?

Agreed. I loved the direction the story went, starting with Deadly Alliance, and loved a lot of the art direction and concepts. But I hope they stick with their word and go with a completely new fighting engine, as I hated it in these past 3 games. Frankly, any game like Tekken, where you are at a disadvantage against people memorizing long combos always makes for boring play. I would almost wish that they followed in the footsteps of what they're doing with Street Fighter IV.

And the endings in Armageddon were a slap in the face.

Yep. Can you imagine what it's going to look like, with (hopefully) Gears-like quality? The fatalities should be insane.

I love the idea that Boon is running a half-assed ARG type thing for a game announcement for a series only three people care about anymroe.

He's been doing it for awhile.

And you see that hit counter of his that reads 66? 1/3 of those are mine.

You wouldn't believe the rampant Mortal Kombat vs. Primal Rage speculation that the "rage" part sparked amongst the insane fanatics. Still, though, I ain't buyin' it. I'm still waiting on our MK vs. SF game, anyway.

If anything Primal Rage-related is on its way, I assure, He's the last person who has anything to do with it.

I keep telling myself I'm a fan of MK, but I haven't been able to stand the last three games. Stiff fighting engines, awful designs, sloppy graphics in general, and fatalities that just get worse and worse. They keep feeling either rushed, or like nobody really gave a shit about them beyond tossing in more and more ...stuff.

Also, the idea of all new characters is an awful one. Quick, what's a totally awesome, original character introduced in any of the last 5 Mortal Kombats? If you named any character, you got it wrong.

I will take a Shaolin Monks sequel, though. Unpolished, sure, but excellent co-op and genuinely fun as hell to play. Shit, even the "versus" mode was way more fun than any of the recent main MK titles. Give me that, with Armageddon's roster, and we're set.

Man, I really, really loved Shaolin Monks. It's the only game left on the Xbox 360 that I really want them to add to the backward compatibility list.

But I'll agree that we've gotten 99% trash for the last 10 years with characters. I've dug the shit out of some concepts (Drahmin, Kenshi, Mavado, Moloch, Havik, Onaga, Shujinko), but their executions were anything but successful.

I know I'm in the minority, but I always thought Quan Chi sucked balls.

As a controlled character, he was never done well. But as a concept and look, I really liked him.

Aside: Bring back Killer Instinct.

Quan Chi was a fucking blast to play in MK4. Not so much since, but that game endeared me to the son of a bitch for life.

His body-stomp move was practically unstoppable.

While I enjoyed Killer Instinct, I have never understood the fascination with it when so many people accuse other fighting games of being cheap with their barely-breakable string-combos; Killer Instinct is the grandaddy of all that.

Scott, I have competition!?! I didn't know I entered one. Who am I competing with?

The Gulager, If there is a new Primal Rage,
It will be..."Di No Mite" Apologies to JJ Walker for the misspelling of his classic phrase from Good Times as created by Norman Lear.

We've got an update over at Noob.com. Under the rhino pic it has the #'s 06.18.05.05 and under the elephant it has the #'s 11.12.15.19.5.

I don't have a clue.

New update: now the Ant-Eater and Gorilla share the # 20.15.21.03.08. Someone start doing some maff.

EDIT:

06.18.05.05 translates to F.R.E.E.
11.12.15.19.5 translates to K.L.O.S.E.
20.15.21.03.08 translates to T.O.U.C.H.

EDIT #2:

Now I see it being one big picture/word puzzle.

We have pictures of someone's eyes, so that probably means SEE or VIEW or LOOK
The animals spell out RAGE
The #'s spell out FREE KLOSE TOUCH

So SEE/VIEW/LOOK RAGE FREE KLOSE TOUCH.

Riiiiiiight.

All the previous crap has disappeared. Now there's an image with a bunch of #'s. When translated to letters represented by the alphabet, here's some results that we get. This isn't nearly as fun or smart as The Dark Knight...

Stop.

Dear Yellow Hare,

You're an okay kid. A few differences of opinion, but nothing worth tossing you off the boards for.

But seriously, nobody here cares about the puzzles for Mortal Kombat 8. When screenshots, a trailer, or concrete details come out, post away. Until then, as Scott said, please cut it out.

Thanks, and Xenu bless,
Justin Clark.

You guys are right.

I blame it on the viral puzzles for TDK, a lack of news for the game and slow time at work. Stepping back and looking at that crossword puzzle made me feel like I'm 9-years old.

I'm done with this retarded shit.

For those who care, remember that the http://www.noob.com counter finally stops counting down today at 3pm. It's most likely just an official announcement, but I hope it's some form of media. In the meantime, I stole this off another forum:

Quote:
Mortal Kombat’s co-creator Ed Boon was recently interviewed by Billy from GI about Midway’s current and next-gen fighting games. It’s there he made surprise revelations about Mortal Kombat 8.

Outside of must-have options such as online multiplayer, he makes mention of some really crazy ideas he’s been having in order to bring that early 90’s arcades feeling back, only this time in a “virtual arcade” lobby setup.

Welp, looks like Scorpion's in MK8 (shock. surprise.). Anyone good at word jumbles? The middle word is LIFTS, apparently.

EDIT: Nevermind. It translates to EMBARGO LIFTS TOMORROW. (Also, the URL of the image says Rain02.)

I just can't picture Batman or The Flash being decapitated by Sub-Zero, or vice versa. This is truly the weirdest crossover I've ever seen in video games.

I'd rather have a legitimate MK, but this has me intrigued in so many weird ways. For one, a Batman fatality.
Gotta see where they are going with this.
They know they're a few weeks late right?
Hmmmm.
You know, ever since the Marvel vs Capcom stuff, I've wanted to see a DC fighting game. But not with Mortal Kombat. The style just doesn't fit. You can't do gushing blood and fatalities with DC comics characters, and the MK fans will pitch a fit if they remove that crap. So it's a no-win.

I really hope this is fan wankery.
Lobo is one of the only DC characters I could see working.

I highly doubt this rumor is true.
Er... no fatalities? Why are they even bothering then?
What the cock?

1up Yours has mentioned the past couple of times MK has come up that there are rumors that the next one would be VERY toned down, to the point of probably not even having blood. Let's be honest, none of played MK for "exciting" gameplay, it was for the fucKING BLOOD!!!! YEAH!! RIP HIS HEAD OFF!! Sorry, it was junior high for a moment there.
Reports are out of no fatalities and almost no blood.

What's the point¿?
Thread Starter
Well, my intrigue has dropped drastically, and all in the course of less than 9 hours, no less. No fatalities and little-to-no blood?

Look, I'm an unabashed MK fan. I've loved it since I was a kid and at one point have owned the actual arcade cabinets of MK, MKII and UMK3 all at the same time (now, just MKII). But I'll be the first to admit that the allure of the game(s) is more its story, design and the inclusion of blood/fatalities. The gameplay is pretty standard and hardly comparable to many of the other fight franchises out there.

I wish this were a joke.
