"Mortal Kombat 8" - Page 2

Seems like DC found a way to top Marvel's "divorce by Satan" in the stupid ideas department...seriously, this whole thing cannot get any dumber.
I hope this rumor is true. I am more interested in Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe because of having a new superhero fighting game. The game I really would love to play is Marvel VS DC, that would be much cooler.
I'd enjoy it for the "bizarreness" value, but I'd probably not buy it, just a rental. I'd love for a Superman fatality where he melts someone with his heat vision, or uses his super-breath to reduce them to a skeleton. GL could form a giant hammer with his ring and pound his opponent into the ground like a nail. The finishing moves are there, it's just a matter of DC letting them do it, I guess.

Yes, but there's your problem right there: MK isn't known to be very strong in the actual gameplay department. You would have to re-haul the entire feel, while wiping out two of the strongest selling points of past games. One could argue that they did this with Deadly Alliance/Deception/Armageddon by adding the brand new fighting engine, but what kept things (somewhat) intact is that they kept blood/fatalities in the game.

When Marvel vs. Capcom happened, it was more of a natural process because Capcom had a strong fighting system and could easily adapt that to the Marvel characters. With this, the DC characters should be fine, but the MK ones are getting the shaft so badly that it'll hardly feel like MK.

I really hope this is the in-between MK game before MK8 hits. Midway committed themselves to releasing an MK-related title each year, with every other game being a spin-off of sorts (see: Shaolin Monks). Since our last game was Armageddon (lame), that could be what this is.

But it's still lame with what they're gimping the MK fans with. I have a feeling that they may feel this one in the pocketbook pretty hard (Martianman is the perfect example: more people will try/rent it out of curiosity than outright buy it). The outcry, whether on MK sites or places like Kotaku, wasn't too pretty when the crossover was announced, and now the lack of blood/gore is only making it worse. Seems like a potentially poor decision on the behalf of Midway, who aren't exactly doing well these days.

Site's up. It's legit, guys. And we've got our first official trailer, with in-game footage (which actually looks kinda decent).

EDIT: Here's an interview with Ed Boon.

That looks stupid as fuck. What a dumb idea.

I love that the site goes up before the media embargo lifts on the info. We were asked not to post anything before 4pm PST today.
Shouldn't it just be called Sub-Zero vs. Batman? It looks like a fan video.
Ironically enough, isn't there a B:TAS movie called Sub-Zero with Mr. Freeze?
Yes, and I would say it had better CG than what I saw in that trailer. That's blatent hyperbole, but I didn't like what I saw at all.
If and only IF you can change Sub-Zero's skin to a Dr. Freeze one, i'll get this game.

By decent, I mean "Armageddon". Meaning I will probably try it out for 1-2 weeks and then forget it.

And for those who don't feel like watching the videos:

Yeah. I sent the stuff to your home address. It looks decent but very VERY Armageddon. I can't see how that's the Unreal 3 engine. And since waiting until you get home sucks, here's notes.

In-Game Trailer:
  • Only shows Sub-Zero vs. Batman
  • Level interactive (shows them going through buildings)
  • Air-fighting: as they are falling down through the air (after going through a building, over a cliff), they are still tumbling and fighting each other. Think of Neo fighting Smith in The Matrix Revolutions.

Interview with Ed Boon:
  • "The story mode in our game is actually two different perspectives you have. And so from the Mortal Kombat side there's a story that takes place in the Mortal Kombat world and it's the invasion of the DC characters. And from the DC side, it's the DC world and the invasion of the Mortal Kombat characters."
  • "Right now we're looking at it from the perspective of some... cataclysmic event happens... it causes kinda like a merger of the worlds and that merger of the worlds creates a lot of really weird circumstances and a lot of unpredictable kind of events."
  • Hired two writers from DC to help write the story.
  • "How do you get somebody like Superman to fight against someone like Sub-Zero and have it be a fair fight?" Some of the abilities of the more "human" characters have been elevated in order to compete. Superman can be vulnerable to magic, can take a punch from Scorpion, etc.
  • Characters, going off popularity. Secondly is the appropriateness of the character.
  • Certain things DC characters can't do.
  • "We don't have stage fatalities where the round ends, so to speak. So you have to beat the guy to death this time and there's no kinda quick ways to do that.
  • Confirmed: Scorpion, Sub-Zero (doesn't think they will ever have an MK game without them) and Batman, Superman.
  • Out this Fall for the 360 and PS3 (sorry Wii!)

I assume there's nothing we don't already know, huh.

Yeah, that sounds like he has NO idea how to tie these two universes together.

Maybe we'll get something like this

Is it really even necessary? Seems a bit moot to me. Did Marvel vs. Capcom really go into depth with story?

It's a Krisis of Infinite Stupidity.

MvsC at least had precedence: Capcom had already proven they could handle the Marvel universe well without sacrificing the strengths of either. Before the trailer even hit, we found out MK vs DC was going to cripple most of the good things about both sides.

This is MK trying to beat Capcom at a game Capcom won nearly 10 years ago. Fuck this.

And Justin is completely and totally right.

Totally agree, Justin. Which is why I'm hoping this is the Shaolin Monks of this year and the real sequel comes out next year. It lets them take a departure from the core series, sticks to their plan of alternating each year and allows them to get familiar with the new hardware. That all seems to be in line with Boon's comments post-Armageddon. I can forgive that.

Or maybe I'm just doing my damnedest to be optimistic.

Ed Boon/Midway: Instead of having some extended plan about what type of games you release on an annual basis, just spend the time and resources to make one really good game first.
This game will be crap, as every MK since 2, but this will still outsell Street Fighter IV 3 to 1.

It's hilarious that Midway, Arc Systems and SNK all have more "unique" or interesting fighters coming than Capcom.

Apparently, GameSpot's confirmed that the fighting engine is re-engineered and that "It's not going to be M-rated".

I had to close the door to my office, I'm laughing so hard at this. Wonder Woman verus Kabal, it's on now!

I can't believe they're including superman. He's preposterously overpowered for a fighting game. Actually, I can't believe any of it. I must have been one of the few who could barely tolerate the merging of Capcom and Marvel characters, but this?
Overlord, Wouldn't Wonder Woman fight Sonya Blade? Anyway, I can't wait for this. I don't care about the Mortal Kombat characters, But I have wanted a superhero fighting game for years. Clearly this will be my 2nd most anticipated 360 game of 2008, 3rd if Street Fighter IV arrives in the US this year.

Well, you could always spend your money on this:

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33028.html

I think its some sort of comic book karma balance thing, having the trailer above be released just in time to wash the taint of MK vs DC from our souls.

But you are probably right.

with Jubilee as some crossover with robin.

Those were dark times.

I actually owned two of those comics, I owned an issue of Dark Claw and I owned one of Spider-Boy something or another and the Super-Something Youth of 2099.

Even as a kid I was like "The hell?"

If you say so. Personally, I think it looks like yet another standard movie-based action game. I'd rather play Tetris. In fact, I think MK vs DC looks marginally more interesting.

Just making Superman have special attacks that reflect the history of the character doesn't do it?
Anyone fighting superman has to hang back and throw magic his way?

Except for the possibility of Batman beating the Joker to death, stupid.

I guess Boon's trying to alleviate some fan fears. If you check out Noob.com, it's got the poster picture from There Will Be Blood, letting us know it's not a "total" loss.
Ridiculous but fun idea. Let's hope they get that whole "good gameplay" thing down this time. I really want to see some DC villains in this. I'm tired of playing as Batman and Superman in everything. Let me play as The Joker or Sinestro.
I still don't get why it's a crossover. Okay, so they have a new MK fighting engine. Just make a straight-up DC fighting game with it.

This just doesn't mesh.
But that wouldn't give them marketing synergy with their own brand! Based on the declining quality of the franchise, I'd say they spend more time thinking about marketing synergy than game design. So on that level, this is genius.
I suppose so. I'm still having a hard time wrapping my brain around this concept.
From every perspective except marketing, I don't like it either. I doubt that I'll be trying this unless the reviews are glowing. And what are the odds of that?
Why would any comics fan not want to play a fighting game with Batman, Superman, and the other characters of the DC Universe vs the Mortal Kombatants of the Midway?
Did you miss the part where they mention they're going to cripple the hell out of the DC side's powers, and there's no Fatalities for the MK side?
Justin Clark, I didn't miss that info...I am glad to see that the MK fighting system is getting a makeover. I am interested in the game solely for the DC Universe characters. Even at lower power levels MK vs DCU will be one of my top games of 2008.
I don't see how it's a makeover Fleed. They're gimping the DC characters, and removing the only thing that ever made MK interesting. Plus it's still made by the team that's the all the other horrible MK games for the past...decade?

If they want to make a DC game, make a DC game. This is just a really bad marketing angle.

Rumor has it that there will be finishing moves, but not fatalities. While I'm still pretty suspect of the game, I have to say that that certainly helps things.
So, are we to expect a film based on this anytime soon?
If one of the finishing moves involves being able to break Batman's back, this might earn a rental.
Eh, that's what YouTube is for.

This idea is stupid and, as Justin pointed out, 10 years too late.
I wasn't aware of it before CHUD, but since one of Green Lantern's weaknesses is the color yellow, will he just immediately drop dead if he fights Scorpion or Cyrax?

This is weird, but it kinda gives you an idea of how it's going to work.

I should've made it a point to use the kreate-a-character mode in Armageddon more.

For the same reason that a Star Wars fan wouldn't want to play Masters of Teras Kasi: because it sucked.

Hey, I owned (and still might) Masters of Teras Kasi. That isn't to say that it wasn't shite...

Back to MK vs DC: Looks like they've confirmed a roster total of 20-22, with 10-12 on each side. Take that as you will.
