Xbox Live Drops the GamerScore Ban-Hammer

This is hilarious: http://www.destructoid.com/score-no-...es-77538.phtml

And as an actual example, look at the actual profile of the guy who used to be #1: http://live.xbox.com/en-US/profile/p...ag=StripClubDJ

I love the fact that they're being forcibly identified, like some sort of sex offender.

Haha. People's "e-peens" are being taken away. That is awesome.

So, this may be n00b question, but what type of external means would someone be able to unlock these achievements?

There are a couple of different ways that I've heard of.

1) Sharing the same account with multiple people in order to gain one huge score by playing multiple games at the same time.

2) Downloading game saves, which automatically unlock the achievements*.

3) Pay services that will take your account information and literally play the game for you, for a fee, in order to get you whatever achievements you want.

*You could always tell who cheated by looking at a specific game and seeing that they did something impossible all in one day (for example, beating the entirety of The Orange Box and all achievements listing the same unlock date).

Wow, that's hilariously evil. I can see some fuckhead twirling his moustache as some paid nerds grind away at unlocking achievements for him.

How pathetic is your life that this is what you spend your hard-earned cash on?

We only need to refer to the fanboy threads for answers.

Thank the lord that these devious achievement phoneys have been brought to justice.. I can finally sleep peacefully at night once again knowing that I'm rightfully ranked 332,430 in the world, unlike that total bullshit 332,630 which I was at before this news.

Now it's just a matter of time.

Jim Sterling is the only decent writer at Destructoid. That site fucking sucks as a whole.

They're good for news, but that's about it. I hardly read any commentary.

I'm not sure what's more pathetic: cheating to acquire a meaningless gamerscore or going out of your way to punish those who acquire a meaningless gamerscore. Just so we're clear, a high gamerscore doesn't actually get you anything in real life. You don't win prizes for it or anything. So who cares? Why care?

Because it's funny.

I think that a part of it is that they were planning on making achievement scores more involved with prizes, etc., but the cheating kinda derailed it. Who knows how much validity there is behind that, though.

I really wonder what the going rates were. Did they pay per achievement? Per game? I'd fall down laughing if someone found me a link to people who did that.

Start Laughing.

500 gamerscore -> $39.99
750 gamerscore -> $59.99
1000 gamerscore -> $79.99
1500 gameerscore -> $119.99
200 gamerscore -> 159.99

Wow, for half the price of 500 gamerscore someone could sign up to gamefly and rent every 2k6/madden sports title for an easy 100-5000 points.

Here's a cheaper way to get 2000 gamerscore.

Rent King Kong and TMNT. Insert into the xbox. Play casually. In 6 hours you will have 2000 achievement points.

$159.99 vs, what.. $15 bucks for two old rentals?

I'm only familiar with the WOW ban-hammer but that made for some hilarious freak-outs and misguided indignation. Prepare for serious comedy.
