Night of the Creeps

Noticed this was going to be on Showtime tonight at 1:30 AM. Just thought I'd bring it up for those like me who haven't seen it but are curious because of how much it's talked up on the boards. That is all.
Good eye! Haven't seen it since I was a kid.... definitely going to check it out.

I definitely holds up.

Man, I wish I had Showtime. I really love this movie, and for the past several years the only place I've been able to see it is on regular cable, like the Sci Fi Channel.

Though if memory serves, seeing it on cable was the only way I was able to see the alternate ending with the cemetary and the alien ship looming overhead. I liked that ending alot better than the zombie dog ending.

I know you're not a horror fan, Molti, but it's got plenty of Tom Atkins.

I like horror, I just don't devour all of it. I'm more inclined to wait for something to get the good word around here. I'll slog through 5 shitty action flicks to get to the good one. I just don't want to do that when it comes to horror films.

But yes, Atkins is a fine selling point.
Now what about horror/action crossovers. Would you consider The First Power to be a good action movie or a shitty horror movie?
You should like it. If not, then you can go straight to hell.
Atkins heavily influenced my enjoyment of Creeps.

I'm the opposite. I will sit through a stack of horror movies looking for a gem. I can say that talking about movies with like minded folks has altered this process a little bit. But, I still enjoy the occasional marathon of horror gold mining.

Thanks for the heads up ! I have not seen this movie in a long time, so I am definitely giving it a spin tonight.

Shitty on both counts. Which is often the problem with such crossovers. I have the same gripe with SILENT RAGE though I guess I'm a lone voice on that one.

But I did like the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, not just because it worked as an action film but that did help it.

What's your take on Dead Heat? Misunderstood classic, or underappreciated gem?

Didn't care for it. Great premise but the execution failed it.
You've seen The Hidden, right?
I like how this thread turned into an ask Molt discussion.
As all threads should.

I like it for the most part, but I definitely feel that the scene in the Chinese restaurant (when all the dead animals come back to life) deserves to be mentioned in that "good scenes from terrible movies" thread that is currently going.

Of course. Been in love with it forever. But I'd put that more in the sci-fi/action pile which has proven to be a much more successful hybrid.

I am thankful that DEAD HEAT gave Mark Goldblatt a chance to practice being behind the camera before he moved onto his masterwork.
btw, Night Of The Creeps isn't much of an action movie. But it does have Atkins weilding a shotgun.
Anyone remember the marketing for this back when it was making it's way through theaters and eventually video?

At the time I remember it being billed as a very serious horror movie. I finally saw it on VHS a while after the marketing died down. Boy was I surprised. Yeah, it was still fairly serious, but I guess you could say this was my first foray into dark horror comedies.

I'm not expecting much action. Since it's from the man behind ROBOCOP 3 I'd just assume it stick to the frights.
There was marketing for this? All I remember was a Fango article. I always assumed it went straight to video.

Yeah, I was fairly young at the time. I'm not sure if there were any commercials for it. However I do remember the posters for this thing.
Yeah, I just remember seeing it at the local video store. I recognized Rusty 2.0 from European Vacation and gave it a shot.
I remember seeing commercials for this during its theatrical run, but of course, living in the tiny town of Menominee, MI (affectionately known as Monotony, MI) at the time, it never opened up anywhere near me.

*shutter*
Fred Dekker showed so much promise once. He wrote House before he directed this. Then he did Monster Squad and it all went to shit. The only thing of his I would recommend is an episode of Tales From The Crypt with Miguel Ferrer (THE THING FROM THE GRAVE).

Fucking weird, I was just thinking about that episode last night. Well, maybe not so weird, with all the Dekker talk around here lately.

I didn't know he wrote HOUSE. That was good. I've never seen MONSTER SQUAD and I get the feeling I'm way past the age where I should even try.
My college roommate and I were big Bob Morton fans, so we watched that one A LOT.

Good call.
It came out when I was in high school. My friends and I were so pissed when we walked out of that theater we beat up a pack of cub scouts in the parking lot.

I'm surprised, I'd think you to be a Shane Black completist.
Speaking of The Hidden, a long time ago I had the first (and only) issue of some Sci-Fi magazine that gave long rundowns and reviews of movies. One of those movies was The Hidden, and they included a picture of the alien after it's "second stage metamorphosis" or something. Instead of a slug, it looked like a cross between a mosquito and a lamprey. The magazine said ultimately it was never used in the film.

Anyone else know about this, or was the magazine a filthy liar?

The only reason I've been tempted is because of Shane Black. But deep down I know it's one that I should have seen before turning 11.

That's pretty much true, unless your adult self digs such subtle, nuanced details as an old mansion located at 666 Shadowbrook Road.
I think you would've enjoyed it up to and including the age of fourteen, maybe. But that's certainly the recommended ceiling.

Really, all you need to know is that the Wolfman's got nards.
Not even Tom Noonan as the Frankenstein monster can save it.

Oh Bob, I think you just raised my temptation level a few notches.

Hmm, I prefer when he quivers as a blind lady hugs a tiger.

Oh, and his big line is "BO-GUS!", which he learned from the kids and uses as a send-off line before hurling Dracula through the air.
Come to think of it, that's all very similar to "Hasta La Vista, Baby" in T2. Hmmmm...

Yeah, but his finest moment is when his wrist stitching unravels, causing him to be pulled into the vortex while the little girl is left holding his disembodied Frankenpaw.

Yes, but you do get the time-travelin' Van Helsing giving the boys a big thumbs-up for their good work.

Just saw this for the first time last week. It made me want to drink a Pepsi and go to a Burger King.

Oh god I had forgotten that part why do you make me remember WHY?!

The Monster Squad doesn't really hold up, but it's not horrible. There are things in it that warrant a viewing. I think the relationship between the sister and Frankenstein's Monster is pretty great, for example. Love Gries in pre-werewolf form. The way the story spools out ain't so hot, but I can see why people get nostalgic for the movie. I bought the special edition and kind of wish I hadn't, but I'd pop it in before I'd pop in my dusty DVD for Magnolia.

Are you suggesting that Magnolia would've been a better movie if Van Helsing, Frankenstein and Dracula had fell out of the sky at the end along with the frogs? Because I'd have to agree with you.

Side Bar: Michael Sembello was like the Kenny Loggins younger, sluttier brother in the 80's. Best Sembello movie song?

"Rock Until You Drop" - MONSTER SQUAD
"Gravity" - COCOON
"Maniac" - FLASHDANCE
"Gremlins...Mega Madness" - GREMLINS

Maniac is certainly the most famous, and Jon Cassady can attest to its power to make your body move involuntarily, but it wasn't set to Don Ameche breakdancing.

There was a music video for this that mostly used the floating alien scenes from the movie. The 80's didn't seem so strange then as it does now.

You mean the special dance mix?
