Netflix Outage

Not that it's a huge deal, but in case you were wondering.

Netflix Outage Means Delays
Subscribers may have to wait for DVDs.
by IGN DVD

March 25, 2008 - If you're a Netflix subscriber, you might've noticed a slight problem yesterday. The popular online DVD rental website was down from around 7AM to 6PM PST on Monday. And while that's not really that long, in the instant gratification online age it can feel like an eternity.

Now, the company has warned that some customers may experience further frustration -- a delay in getting their requested movies. Spokesman Steve Swasey told USA Today that DVDs that normally would've gone out Monday may not go out until Tuesday. The outage reportedly wreaked havoc on Netflix's distribution centers as well.

It was the second-longest disruption of service in the history of the website which launched nine years ago. The company wouldn't say what caused the outage, or discuss how many of their 7.5 million subscribers will be affected. Users could opt to stream their movies using Netflix's PC-based player if they don't want to wait.

The company may soon offer more streaming options to subscribers via the Xbox 360. Swasey told Reuters that the company has recently polled their users about the possibility. He says they want to get consumers their movies "in as many ways as possible."

Checking a few minutes ago, I found that my Netflix account address had been changed to:

Mr. Ma Lincong
Secretary-General
China Association for Standardization (CAS)
P.O. Box 820
No. 2 Yue Tan Bei Xiao Jei
Beijing, Beijing
100837
CHINA, PRC

WTF?!??!?

Netflix been hacked?

I haven't heard anything about this yet.

When all of your precious copies of I Am Legend and The Mist end up in China, don't say I didn't warn you.
Noted.

However, the former movie going away wouldn't bother me too much.

Really? Huh...

We're in the middle of playing BSG catch-up with season three. They best make with discs three and four, post haste.

Nah, I was just kidding.
Darn. I was hoping you weren't. That would have been kind of cool.

Sorry, I just checked and discs three, four and five are on the way. I'll let you know how they were, though.

Heh. That's why I made sure my queue was clear so I could receive all of them at once.

I've learned not to trust my local stores for stop gaps (Seriously, nobody in Toledo has The Wire season 4)

Yeah well if I don't get my Planes, Trains and Automobiles by tomorrow there's gonna be hell to pay.
Come on, Netflix. I can only wait so long to see Bill Nighy be awesome, and Kelly MacDonald be sexy. Broooooooogue.

No doubt. Netflix is in the shitter with me right now anyway. On Saturday I was supposed to receive Swimming With Sharks, but they mislabeled the sleeve and sent me Blade Runner: Director's Cut. That'd be, as Bob Ross said, a happy accident, save for the fact I already own the DC of Blade Runner. Now I have to wait until tomorrow to get my Frank Whaley fixation. Bullshit.

Aww, you made me paranoid. I just added a few things to my queue today, but I logged back in to make sure they were going to me.

Ah, that's nothing. I once was expecting FITZCARRALDO, and that's what the sleeve said, but the disc inside was disc three of the first season of FRIENDS.

Yeah, that trumps my suffering by a mile, JB. Klaus Kinski gives way to... David Schwimmer?!
I'll tell you what Netflix needs to fix pronto - instant viewing not being supported for Macs. Cocksuckers.
Amen to that, Lisa. Also, not being supported for anything but IE.
Yeah. Let me use it in Firefox, dicks. And let me install without administrative privileges at work, but that might just be me.

With your 80 cent refund, you can get:

3 thinly sliced Ham slices

Pawn shop toothbrush

Plastic moustache accessory

7 thinly sliced Ham slices that fell on floor

But as mentioned in another thread, I don't like ham. Could I please substitute either another movie, or 7 thinly sliced turkey slices that fell on the floor?
No, but I should add that the ham in question is the really slippery, chewy, hot-pink truck floor mat kind of ham.
Can I get 2 clean pieces of ham, and 2.5 pieces of floor ham?

If not, I guess I'll take the toothbrush.

A one-day delay I can deal with. What pisses me off is when I get three damaged discs in one week (OZ: Season 3, Disc 2, Walk The Line and The Departed). The time it takes to send back three discs (scattered through the week) and then get replacements basically means that you've been fucked out of an entire week of rentals. And nothing is worse than sitting down, ready to relax and watch a film and have it stop playing five minutes in. And why does it stop playing? Oh, I don't know, maybe that huge fucking scratch/trench that's been cut across the entire length of the disc.

Between incessant talking at theaters and a general inability to care for rental discs, it seems like asshole motherfuckers are killing my urge to watch movies. I can't go to a theater chain and enjoy myself, and renting seems to be more trouble than it's worth.

Rant off. Carry on.

I was hoping you'd change your mind about ham so I could stop being a dick. But my limbless, deaf, wrinkled existence continues. Sight and sense of smell are still intact, however.

On a less important note, I've been unaffected by the website outage because my slack-ass has had the same three discs out for at least three weeks. Life has been interfering with my movie watching a lot lately.

It took a full week to get Kentucky Fried Movie, and I got no apology or refund from these fuckers. And now they have to get Celtic Pride from fucking Rochester, which delays them another two days, even though I fucking live in New York?
Netflix should inform you that your movie isn't available from your usual shipping center (as they do), and give you the option to say, you know what, I don't really need to see Total Recall so badly that you have to ship it from the other side of the country in order to get it to me (as they don't). Skip it and send me the next movie in my queue that doesn't have to be shipped from Anchorage.

Somewhere in the country is my lost copy of The Fountain. They eventually sent me a replacement, but I still wonder what the hell happened to that first disc.

Yeah, but they have to shlep an additional two hours by postage? Taking them two extra days? I mean, c'mon.
This seems as good a place as any for this question (Admittedly, if I rack my brain I could probably figure this out myself, but fuck that.):

American Gangster has been at the top of my queue since it's release. How can the wait time fluctuate between short, long and very long? More specifically, what makes the wait longer than it was yesterday?
They may have plenty of copies on one day, but the next day a bunch of people may return something and have your movie at the top of their queue.
I got the 5% credit e-mail as well and only "suffered" a one-day delay. Not bad considering I get one day turn around times anyway.
When I logged in tonight, what did I get greeting me? A selection of Gene Tierney movies I have not yet seen, chosen by Netflix for my perusal. Awesome.
Totally unrelated, but at one point I had people stealing Netflix envelopes from my mailbox, and I don't even live in a shitty neighborhood. I had to lie and say I never got a bunch of discs (technically I never did!).
OK, what the hell. I was looking at my queue, and where it used to say blu-ray or regular dvd, nothing there. Anyone else have this, or just me? I had some bluray discs on there, now it doesn't say which is which.
Just checked my queue. You're not alone.
Mine all say VHS.
Except Michael Clayton, which reads "series of 8-12 crudely drawn pencil sketches". This blows.
