Officially starts next week, although a couple of titles will start revealing some Skrulls tomorrow;

Quote:
The Story: SECRET INVASION IS HERE!! Years in the making, months in the teasing...and it all STARTS HERE!!
The shape-shifting alien race known as the Skrulls has secretly infiltrated every super-powered organization on Earth with one goal...full-scale invasion! In this DOUBLE-SIZED first issue, page after page unveils reveal after reveal and shocking moment after shocking moment! Brian Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu leap off the pages of mega-hit New Avengers and deliver a story that will change the Marvel Universe forever.
THE MARVEL UNIVERSE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!!

Anybody buying this series? I was disappointed by the conclusion of Civil War, I wonder if this will be better.
I'll only buy what MarvelBoy tells me. But, they took his blog down.

Was that for real? I saw some posts about it in newsarama but didn't get what the whole deal was.

Anyways, known Skrulls for now:

Elektra
Blackblot
Cobalt Man

The next Avengers preview seems to imply that Daredevil is a Skrull too.
So what was the point of the Illuminati? They formed to prevent shit like a Skrull Invasion and now they're facing a Skrull Invasion that already happened?

Way to go smartest and most powerful men on Earth.

I'm going to be pretty upset if almost a decade run of what is essentially one story gets thrown away this week. To me, this and Cap are the only untouchables.
Which story? Everything gets ret-conned eventually.

I think that one might be a case of a "recent" replacement. I don't think they are all meant to have taken place a "long time".

The retcons from this shit are going to make a Crisis look like a clambake.

I'm thinking this, too.

Unless they have this planned out to absolute perfection, this is going to be a huge goddamn mess.
MarvelBoy was real. They shut down his LJ and expect more shit about it next Monday.

There's also talk that Luke Cage and Ms. Marvel are Skrulls.

Damn, what the heck is wrong with you?!?!? Why did you spoil the whole damned thing?!?!

Just kidding, I did read about that before, by accident :-)

They're saying at least one major X-Man is a skrull (Cyclops is odds on favorite). And I still think they'll use something like this to explain the dead Steve Rogers. Would also explain the recent physical changes in Wonder-Man. Newsarama has an interview with the new Thunderbolts writer saying that the T-Bolts get attacked by a "marvel hero" who ends up being a skrull. The T-Bolts take on the skrulls and Venom eats some. That made me laugh in a good way.

Bendis is making it sound like this has been his plan for years and that "all the pieces" come together in this puzzle. I don't trust he's that good of a writer, but what the hell, thrill me.

No, kitty cat Beast is the odds on favorite.

According to Brubaker, his Captain America run will have nothing to do with secret Skrulls. I pray this is true.

Aw Hell Na they wouldn't mess with New X-men/Astonishing!

Where is all this information coming from? I was hoping for a fun, pulpy read, but in the last few hours i'm considering just leaving it be.

Well, considering he has been planting the seeds at least since the first issue of New Avengers, you're way off. Something being rotten at the heart of the Marvel Universe has been an undercurrent to almost every story in that series, and many related to it.

I just expect it to be a fun, exciting, comic book. Hopefully retcons and sketchy justifications for plot points/characterizations don't weigh down the sheer unadulterated silly fun of suspecting many of your favourite characters to be evil space aliens.

Frankly, the way I feel the series has been doing lately, maybe some Skrull action could get it out of its rut. I love the series and everything, it's just that as soon as Bucky became Cap it took a steep downturn.

Maybe this is me casting my lot as a fanboy, but if they fuck with Daredevil I'm going to fucking blow a gasket.

I hope so. I despise his redesign. Admittedly, I stopped reading the X-books many moons ago (Whedon's Astonishing aside) but it still saddens me to see my childhood fave walking around looking like Ron Perlman in search of a Linda Hamilton.

EDITED TO ADD: Just noticed that the link above shows Beast in his 'classic' look. I'm hoping that means we'll see a return to it.

Swipe for spoilers from the final issue-

Stan Lee is a Skrull. Steve Ditko knew this all along, but was discredited when a public smear campaign painted him as a kook. Steve returns after decades in seclusion to defeat Stan and take his rightful place as spokesman for the Marvel universe. A complete reboot follows with Ditko replacing Stan. Look for new Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends dvd sets with newly recorded Ditko narration and rereleases of Marvel movies with digitally inserted Ditko cameos.

Nuff said!

Considering what happened with "One More Day", I would bet heavily on the latter.
And,frankly, I am getting plain sick of this nonstop emphasis on "BIg Events".
There is something to be said for a story that can be fit within a few issues of a single title.
Or,hell, looking back at the Silver Age, when Lee,Kirby and Ditko were at the top of their game, in is incredible how much plot and characterization they could fit into a single issue of 22 pages.

I guess some people will just eat up any slop Quesada and company throws at them and considers it Caviar.

Man, that preview really seems to directly imply that THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NO WAY POSSIBLE IN THE WORLD EVER that Tony Stark is a Skrull.
My only hope for this series is it has more Thor beats up the Marvel Universe action.

Just read New Avengers, it was an OK issue featuring mostly Echo (with heavily cut and paste art btw). A hero shows up and turns out to be a Skrull, however, but his purpose is to imitate Echo so I don't think that Skrull has being impersonating that hero at all.

Brevoort and Quesada and Bendis went ahead and confirmed that Tony Stark is definitely NOT a skrull way back when the storyline was first announced. They knew he'd be the first suspect, and they decided to nip it in the bud before the conspiracy theories started flying around.

I'm a Skrull.

What the fuck? I'm not just eating this shit up, you presumptious twat. I'm saying it's bullshit to say Bendis hasn't been planning this for a while when the evidence has been there since at least 2004 (or was it 2005?)* and that I'm looking forward to it, albeit with some caution. How the fuck is that unreasonable? You even fuckin' quoted me criticizing a shining example of a great series being obviously muddled by editorial input at Marvel.

*There are several interviews circa those years where Bendis talks about all the mysterious plot threads building to something eventually, and clearly this is it. Whether you like the story or not, there's at least been significant planning to it. I think I'm going to actually read the damn story and see if its any good rather than just assuming myself. Perhaps some others here should try that, too.

Now way. Life's too short for such gambles.
Could have misread it but it seemed like that EW interview spoiled the ending to this arc.
There are a lot of interesting ideas in this thread. For those of you who did read New Avengers #39, I can tell you the skrull reveal was for the purpose of that specific issue, and it had not been impersonating that character previously.

I'll be reviewing these for CHUD and Rack Raids, so I'll post the links in here once they're written. Because, you know, my opinion is gospel.
Yeah, it's pretty obvious what was going on in New Avengers #39. I don't see how any confusion can come in. I doubt it's a double fake-out, either. That would be lame.

I personally liked it, but felt the ending with Hawkeye to be a bit abrupt, especially considering he's like, chief suspect Skrull for that team.

New Avengers #39 Review

It was as sensible as it could have been with next week being the start of the event. I agree that the ending with Clint and Maya was a bit odd, and with Hawkeye many people's pick for being a Skrull on the New Avengers I felt that it was a subtle (in your face) clue.

Great review, and I'm with you on the art. If you notice a lot of it is also basically copy and paste, with the same images repeated all over the place. It looks lazy, but Mack says (and it sounds like an excuse to me) that he did that on purpose.

There was a whole little controversy on this particular issue because Mack basically copied an image from a magazine model for the cover, and had to replace it with the current (mediocre in my view) one. There are also copies of other artists inside the actual comic.
I heard about the cover art, and Daredevil seemed like a cross between Steve Epting and Photoshop.

Greg Land does it all the time now, and it's a HUGE turn-off. It's so cheap and tacky, I just can't bring myself to respect artists who do that.

I miss the Greg Land who started off pencilling Nightwing. I used to love him back then, but now he's a glorified Maxim photoshop detailer.

Speaking of "all the way back in New Avengers #1", was it ever revealed who the guy Electro was talking to at the beginning? The guy who hired Electro to start the breakout?

Nope, never revealed. My guess is Maria Hill, and obviously she's a Skrull (at least if that's true).

If she isn't a Skrull I'd be very surprised.

Turns out a lot of this NA issue is plain old copy and paste! I used to think you had to have some talent to be hired as a comic book artist, but I keep forgetting this is an industry that used to praise guys like Liefield.
