The Mist DVD Problems?

Did anyone else purchase their copy of The Mist 2-Disc from Best Buy today? I got about 10 minutes into the movie before I realized that it's showing as Fullscreen, without the letterbox look. I've checked both the slip and the DVD case and they both say WIDESCREEN VERSION, as do both of the actual discs themselves. Am I missing something or did they screw up the release?

It doesn't play on my laptop (neither does Gone Baby Gone) but I'll go put it on my TV and report back.

Does the label on the disc say widescreen or fullscreen? Also, it's not accidentally playing 16x9 enhanced?

The label on both discs says says Widescreen and I don't think it's playing in the wrong format by accident as I've changed nothing on the TV and there's nothing in the DVD settings to try and alter. Why do I get the feeling we're about to have a massive "Back to the Future"-type recall :\

Not on mine. I'd check your player settings or something.

Works fine on my PC, haven't checked with the TV yet, but I suspect it'll be fine there as well.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm gonna try it on this laptop once we're done watching it, then try it again when I get home. It might just be my girlfriends' crap-ass DVD player.

EDIT: Back home, tried my DVD player and it's fine. I guess hers is just archaic, which doesn't surprise me since it skips perfectly fine DVDs all the time.

The box incorrectly says it's 2.35:1, while it's 1.85:1. If your TV is accidentally set to 16x9, it'll appear on screen with no black bars.

Have you watched Darabont's introduction to the black and white version? I've answered the "Who would you want to meet in Hollywood?" question before but never really felt totally sincere about my answers. I mean, Sigourney Weaver is a beautiful lady but the slim chances of successfully buttering her up enough to slip under the same covers renders any meeting with her somewhat inconsequential. But after seeing him on the recent Blade Runner DVD special features, and now this, I can unequivocally say Frank Darabont is a guy I could talk to---well, listen to, more like it. Hours. If ever there were a man who truly loved film. This guy.

Don't have time to watch it tonight but I did check out the opening minutes of the black and white version. I don't want to prematurely ejaculate an opinion or nothing, but it looked pretty damn fantastic. Of course, a two-hour-long still shot of a sweaty lumberjack taking an inconsiderate shit in a port-a-potty would probably rank as pretty damn fantastic provided it's introduced by Darabont's sunny, infectious disposition.

I have watched and did enjoy the B&W version much more than when I saw the film in the theatre.

So, you haven't been experiencing problems with the DVD?

I don't have the 2 disc set, but I did get the regular DVD from Netflix - no problems with it on my laptop.

Wait, your DVD player broke months ago. Are you still watching all your movies on laptop?

I never had a broken DVD player - I've always watched them on my laptop. I'm the slow-assed mofo who still hasn't actually purchased a DVD player.

(What? Okay, okay. Soon. I promise.)

Well I rented from Blockbuster and having a highdef TV I guess I'm not use to noticing anymore when something is full frame, but it's definitely not 1.85:1 as it completely fills my screen. So something is wrong with something here I reckon.

EDIT: Looking on the back it does say it was enhanced for widescreen tvs. So it seems it was messed with to get the new version of full frame: 1.78:1 I think this is going to be a common occurrence. Rubes buy widescreen tvs and they think "oh boy. this is that widescreen they're always talking about at the movies. i'll never have to see those black bars again" and then they put in the movie and it still has black bars. So studios are "enhancing" to 1.78:1

My two-disc, not bought at Blockbuster, plays just fine. One hell of a cool DVD set.

I'm pretty sure DVDs have been saying "Enchanced for Widescreen" or "Enhanced for 16x9" or something similar for years. I believe it's just refering to the fact that it's an anamorphic transfer, which was unfortunately considered an "enchancement" (rather than standard procedure) for far too long.

Yeah I was just reading up about widescreen tvs and how they output 1.85:1. I don't know if my Samsung automatically zooms on them or what, as I see no bars at all when I should see at least something. The last two movies I watched were 1.85:1 and they definitely filled the screen which is set on "Just Scan" on my Samsung.
