Free Doctor Pepper if Chinese Democracy is Released this Year - Page 4

Applied for my free "Pepper". Not sure I'll be thirsty for soda in the middle of winter, but I'll take it.

Too bad the coupon won't have anything about G N'R on it. Would make for a better keepsake than thirst quencher.

You know, Chinese Democracy also came out in CANADA today, Dr Pepper.
Just picked up my copy from Best Buy and checked out the booklet on my way out. I started from the back first, and saw two pages with the song titles listed which I thought were the lyrics, as there was a significant amount of writing beneath each title. Wrong. It's two pages worth of each song's credits.

I'm stuck on the 'loading' page for the Dr. Pepper site. Does anyone have a direct link to the form?

There's a rumor going around that GNR might be performing tonight at the AMA's:

Service unavailable. GNR fans are thirsty.

Took me about 20 minutes at 7am this morning to finalize the deal.

Reload, retry, reload...
In that 20 minutes you could've walked up to your local 7-11 and bought a can of Dr.Pepper, a Hostess Fruit Pie AND some Junior Mints instead of staring at a monitor going click click click click.

Well I'm sure he had some porn open in another tab or something.

I have my coupon incoming, but only because I randomly remembered late last night. Even so it took a couple of refreshes.
Really loving this album. After a first listen, my list of favorites includes "Better", "Street of Dreams", "Catcher in the Rye", "I. R. S.", "Madagascar" and "Prostitute"....but seriously, I don't see myself skipping over any songs with great frequency.
If I could chuck two songs they would be "If the World" and "Scraped" I really, really cannot get into "If the World" one bit, and I find "Scraped" to be annoying. Other than those two songs I think the album's pretty tops.
I've only heard this whole album once, on Myspace, but it definitely warrants more listens. I still can't get over that Don whateverhislastnameis on Variety saying the title track is the highlight, as it's one of the worst songs(and Shackler's Revenge immediately following is a superior "rocking out" track).

I dig it overall, but Axl's voice can be grating in ways it's never been to me before. We'll see, I'm buying this sucker as soon as I can get to civilization.
Yeah, the title track is worse than the holocaust. It sounds like an outtake from Sifl and Olly.
"Better" is creeping up my list of Favorite Guns N Roses Songs of All-Time.
Every time I listen to this album there isn't any track I want to skip, which is very rare. Even the dodgy intro to Scraped has grown on me!

The ending of Prostitute is just perfect.

Uhhh....

Gutman's letter makes clear his view that the original campaign was an "exploitation of my clients' legendary reputation and their eagerly awaited album" and "brazenly violated our clients' rights." He is also seeking an "appropriate payment... for the unauthorized use and abuse of their publicity and intellectual property rights," with the threat of further action if an acceptable offer is not made.

"Now is the time to clean up the mess," says Gutman.

Gutman adds: "The entire point of your campaign has been to use public interest in Axl Rose and Guns N' Roses as a lure to increase consumer awareness of Dr Pepper." He further states that "mocking undertones" in the online promotional content represent a "raw and damaging commercial exploitation of our clients' rights," adding that the association is "even more damaging in light of your shoddy execution of your disingenuous giveaway offer."
I agree with the "shoddy execution of your disingenuous giveaway offer" part.

If you didn't own a computer with internet access, or couldn't get through, you got no soda. Even if you did, you gotta wait two months to get it.

I'm really digging the album but why didn't Dr. Pepper do this like 7 years ago?
If the world's the only one i've really dug so far. But then, i'm not a big GnR fan - probably not even enough of a music fan (since I thought the title track's ok).

I'll give it a couple of listens to settle. Shackler's nearly does it for me, but there's some frankly terrible stuff going on in it that ruins any decent buildup.
There are so many albums that on first listen are great, then turn to shit(or become boring), then the others that you simply don't like at first, then grow on you. This is certainly a grower for me. I thought it was mostly a mess before, but liked some elements. It took several listens(okay, like 6 or 7 over a few days), but I love it overall. I'm still in a bit of shock that I'm actually listening to it after all these years.

Certainly not the best song on the album, but I can't stop listening to "Sorry". Love that chorus.

*edited to add: I think the main weak link on the disc is sadly Axl's voice, especially when he's doing his high-pitch screech. He's a better singer than that, it's too bad he doesn't use his other singing voices more often than he does. Then again, they aren't as distinctly "Axl". I love how he sounds like an Axl from 30 years in the future in parts of "Madagascar".

See, I'm gonna flip the script and say that Axl's the only thing that saves this for me. Otherwise it just sounds like mostly Protooled nu-rock junk.

Then again, I've been known to be deluded.

So, interesting shit has come to light in this endless saga:

1) Chinese Democracy's sales in the U.S. are dismal. I love the album, but there's no way to spin this positively beyond "Well, 260K isn't bad considering..."

2) Finger pointing abounds, but Geffen executives in at least one region place the blame squarely on Axl for failing to do any promotion for his $14 million project.

3) Best Buy spent a tidy (and "how convenient") sum to the tune of $14 milllion to secure the exclusivity deal. Essentially, the astronomical studio tab is now repaid, the label got its money back, and Axl is home free, while Best Buy is sitting with 1.5 million copies of a commercially iffy product...

4) It's been more or less confirmed that GN'R have at least 2 more completed albums worth of new songs waiting in the wings - which can be released with little risk to the label and without the stigma that has hurt the public's perception of Chinese Democracy.

As Axl himself once said... "Yowza."

The album is horrible. Blah blah it's only my opinion blah blah. But it is indeed horrible. First time I actually laughed out loud at a song, and I mean an honest laugh. I figured most people that liked it were having a Crystal Skull Syndrome thing, but apparently there weren't that many.

Blame, though, is on not releasing Better as the lead single. Even though I think he overproduced it (by which I mean, I think I'll try to track down the demo that leaked a couple years ago because I think I prefer it), that track has the benefit of being "good", which the rest of the album does not. Blah blah only opinion blah blah blah.

Still, live Guns fills stadiums no? So I think Axl must find himself pretty liberated. His album crashed and burned, so he is probably realizing that not being perfect ain't the end of the world. Or, he is deluded and sees it as a success and feels invincible. Either way, he can release whatever he wants now and we have another Smashing Pumpkin-like comeback that amounts to quite a meh.
The title track sounds exactly like a Velvet Revolver song but with Axl instead of Scott Weiland. It's the only song with Sorry that I really don't like.

Yesterday I played Rock Band for the first time since getting the album. The Shackler's Revenge mix for the game is horrible.

Amazingly. I'm not shocked at this album's lack of quality at any level.
After initially dismissing this album, I actually think it's pretty good.

This feels like a honeymoon gone awry with a hateful midget bride. I really liked the album at first, but now it's just painful.

In my defense, I was drunk enough to give it a listen, so there's my rationale for somewhat defending it.

Got my coupon today!

Nothing about G N' R on it. Expires 2/28/2009.
I got my coupon last week, and already managed to lose the fucker. Mildly annoying.
I've been listening to the album a lot for about a month now and I really like it. There Was a Time and Madagascar are my favorites.

The problem I have with Chinese Democracy is that all the songs I don't like follow each other in the middle: Catcher in the Rye, Scrapped and Riad 'n' the Bedouins. It would have been a stronger album without these three.
Glad to hear that you've been enjoying it as well - While I really like "Catcher," the other two you mentioned and "IRS" are where the album slips and sputters for me.

That said, the second half of Chinese Democracy has what I feel are the most important and most interesting songs on the album. Sorry, Madagascar, This I Love, and Prostitute are really unique tracks and create a cool atmosphere for the album to go out on. Especially Prostitute, which implements tons of random musical ideas to maximum effect... and somehow, I think it succeeds.

Axl on Slash:

"There is the distinct possibility that having his intentions in regard to me so deeply ingrained and his personal though guarded distaste for much of "Appetite" other than his or Duff's playing, Slash either should not have been in GUNS to begin with or should have left after "Lies". In a nutshell, personally I consider him a cancer and better removed, avoided and the less anyone heard of him or his supporters, the better."

I never thought this would happen but I now believe that Axl is the one telling the truth.

I've recently read Slash's autobiography and what stuck the most is that Slash is a junkie and he's got a junkie's mentality. It's never is fault. Ever. About anything.
