I do have low standards, but an original premise (and decent performances) in this genre is a rare thing and that bought a ton of goodwill IMO.
As for the tone, (again, IMO) it came across as a black comedy in the vein of Lucky McKee's
MAY, Henenlotter's stuff, or an ep of TALES FROM THE CRYPT. For me, it's probably the way the actors played their roles and the highly bizarre circumstances. Not a knee-slapping Zucker Bros flick, but I found it amusing, as well as gruesome.
