Chewer use of the word 'hipster'

Thread Starter
I always find myself amused when people use this word on the board because I suspect it's being used to simply mean 'someone cooler/better dressed/with a hotter girl than me.'

Now, I hate hipsters, but I understand that, as an example, nobody in CLOVERFIELD was a hipster. I think this use of the word hipster is like in the 60s when people assumed everybody with long hair was a hippie.

The term hasn't come into use here in Canada so I have no idea what an actual hipster is. Can I be clued in please?

ETA: I've googled the term but it seems to be a term as vague and elusive as hippie or Gen Xer.
when I first read reviews of Cloverfield on CHUD and saw the word "hipster", I winced.
The Cloverfield kids seemed like yuppies to me.
More Jeremy's problem than Chewers' but I agree. Agreed.
But since those posts where we sorted it out got eaten:

Jinx you owe me a coke, Phil!

'Hipster' is woefully overused, and I've started to catch myself when I'm on the verge of saying/writing it.

And in no way does it apply to young people with lots of money, as in Cloverfield - while that type might fall into the category of hipster here and there(see trust fund hipster for example), using it to name someone who just cut you off in their new 540i while doing coke off of a passenger's freshly-installed fake rack is totally incorrect.
Isn't it just people who read Pitchfork or dress like those Cloverfield kids? Because I might be in trouble then.
No, the guy dressed better than me with the hot girlfriend is an asshole.

It's a term that is not as tired as fanboy, but it's close.

Their Olympics are pretty entertaining, though- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAO4EVMlpwM

The posts weren't eaten - Owen gets the ball rolling at the top of page 10.

With all the derision that my wife has dumped on my ratty Chuck Taylors and my "embarrassing" taste for the High Life, that bingo card is like a reverse-psychology victory for her.

Exactly, or beards or ugly as shit aviator framed eyeglasses. For that matter.

But that bingo card is dead on. 'cept for the cabie hat. I imagine Stormin' wouldn't take that too lightly.

But essentially in my view, Hispters took the smarmy you think you're too fuckin cool for school view that Gen X'ers had in the previous decade.

I thought girl pants were emo?

That chart's pretty old, and partially out of date, but you get the idea.
When I was at the airport 2 weeks ago, I saw a dude wearing horn rimmed "Harry Caul" glasses. Would that be considered hipster?
Perhaps but when I was at the arclight for the last LA chewer meetup. I saw some guy who looked my age but had a memeber's only jacket on. There's no fuckin way that was worn other than for some sort of "irony" bullshit.
I have an embarassing amount of the stuff on that card. Does it matter that I don't own/wear/use them with a self-aware, ironic detachment? No? Well, piss off, then.

This reminds me of the nerd/fanboy dichotomy in that most (probably not all) of those who seem to throw around the word "hipster" as an insult seem to be doing it defensively. Hipster A/nerd A calls hipster B/nerd B a "hipster/fanboy" so that hipster A/nerd A can feel more secure in his non-hipster-ness/non-fanboyishness.

The analogy doesn't quite flow in terminology, but that's only because no one's come up with the "acceptable" low-level version of "hipster" to match geek/nerd/whatever-functions-as-the-socially-acceptable-version-of-fanboy. If this were to happen, the distinction would still not be clear to people who aren't, in some way, hipsters, just as the distinction between geeks and fanboys probably wouldn't be clear to anyone who doesn't care about Star Wars or Star Trek, has never read a comic book, and thinks Buffy the Vampire Slayer sounds like the dumbest thing ever.

The Onion AV Club covered this ground last year, incidentally. It's a pretty decent opinion piece.

At my old college, at the Communication's building, all I ever had to do was look down, and I'd see tons of (mostly) black converse sneakers go by during the break between classes. I've got a pair of Jackass endorsed Converse sneakers, but I only wear them every so often. Mostly because I don't see them sold anymore.

A lot of the more 'avant garde' NYC hipsters - the ones who go to Motherfucker or Misshapes - embrace the word hipster now.

There's something so perfect about telling people that they're using the term for "condescending, too-cool-for-school douchebag" incorrectly in a condescending and too-cool-for-school douchebag manner.
It's not condescension because that what it is. It's the attitude you get from the other side. How else would you describe it?

No one over 30 should get too hung up on what to label themselves. But if you can make a living out of riling people up over it, go crazy.
You really shouldn't even get hung up on labels anyway even before 30. Who cares.
That chart is sort of a grab bag for lots of different types of people.

Though, I'd like to ask Devin if he sees any differences/similarities in the NY/LA hipster types?

It's just as bad as the emo thing in my opinion.

All I know is that I need to start figuring out my outfit for the Rilo Kiley show next month.

Rilo Kiley? I thought you guys cream their jeans for Wilco?

I see what you're saying Eko even though my inability to proofread comes right out with that statement. Thankfully I was able to use the edit button.
Wilco is for aging, faded hipsters.
And their vinyl records are always expensive.
Shows what I know, which is none. But I never claimed to know anything anyway.
How about the term hipster doofus? Anything wrong with that?

No one should get too hung up on most of the stuff we talk about on this board, maybe politics and religion excepted. Still, if something's worth discussing at all, it's worth discussing intelligently.

For the record, my in-laws saw Wilco on SNL a few weeks ago and thought they were fantastic. They've bypassed even aging, faded hipster appeal.
Well it's a Seinfeld coined term. I suppose it's fine.

If you've heard of the band, then it's already passe for hipsters.
Except maybe Sufjan Stevens... he's still popular.

Aging Hipster. Please don't forget the capital letters, as you can clearly hear them spoken whenever the 18 year olds discuss them.
When you say Aging Hipsters you mean the ones that are 23-25 correct? Jesus, I knew I was fucked.
It's funny how many of the things on the bingo card can just be accessories for an old man.
Hipster - somone who defines himself or herself in contrast to what is popular.

Hipsters refuse to like good stuff if it gets too trendy, and for that reason they lose my respect. They also seem to possess a smug satisfaction due to their constant attempts to stay at the forefront of what is not yet fashionable.

On the money, my friend. On the fuckin money!

And miller, you're right. It is like dressing like an old guy. Cardigans, Argyle Sweaters, and that fuckin Member's Only Jacket. No sir, I will not dress like I'm 78 when I'm 24. Not now, not ever.

Yeah, but this thread wasn't meant for discussion. But while we're here, Graynadian nailed it.
