The unofficial "games that deserve more love" thread

Just share your two cents on any game or games that critics or the general public ignored/disliked/dissmised, yet you loved em.
I'll start with my latest bargain bin purchase:
"Monster Madness: Battle for suburbia" (XBOX 360); certainly not a perfect game, but its a blast to play with friends, plus, its practically a love letter to one of my favorite 16 bit classics, "Zombies ate my neighbors".
Also, if you dont buy "Dreamfall" from Live's marketplace, I hate you.

Clive Barker's Undying.

Jedi Knight 2 : Jedi Outcast

Those two should be fucking classics!

Dead on, Tati...sure, clive barker lost some credit with "jericho", but "Undying" i easily one of the best FPS ever made.

Dreamfall was okay, but the game really overdid it with the ginormous amount of dialogue and cutscenes all leading up to an unsatisfying conclusion.

I'll go with Primal on the PS2. The combat system is underwhelming, but if you can't get past it, the game offers some great puzzles along with a nice storyline to pad it out.

Strider 2.

If you don't own it, I inherently hate your fucking guts.

I seem to remember mostly negative feedback for Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, but I loved playing that game. I thought the soundtrack was a great step back to the classic favourites, plus I loved the idea of familiar and weapon customizing.

I also like Evil Dead: Fist Full of Boomstick. Of all the crappy Evil Dead games that have been put out, I thought it was the most fun, especially because you had an undead sidekick you could literally kick around and abuse in order to help you solve certain puzzles. Plus, Bruce Campbell's VO work is always awesome to listen to.

Powerstone.

When I got my Dreamcast the guy at the store was going on about how great Soul Calibur was and I kept saying I wanted Powerstone. The guy is right, Soul Calibur was fantastic, but I think that Powerstone was always living in it's shadow as a 3D fighter.

The trick to making this game work is you had to tweak the balance settings to make it fun. I had the super mode work so that you did more damage but also took more damage. The default settings made it a bit too overpowered.

The Spider-Man games were a much better display of The Chin's talents. Nothing beats being told to complete an objective while he "runs out to grab a ham sandwich"
I certainly won't dispute that. One of the reasons why I love the not-as good first and third installments of the Spidey game franchise. And it just drove 2 even further over the top.

But I still loved playing as Ash with Bruce Campbell's personality and voice intact.
Call of Duty 4. You're damn right, I said it.

In all honesty I thought Viva Pinata should get more love. Yeah it's fucking pinata's and yeah it's kind of "kiddie" but fuck if it ain't fun. Plus I can play it with my kids watching and not worrying about the random fuck, shit, ass, bitch stumbling out of a characters mouth.

Evil Dead: Regeneration, sir.

Fistful of Boomstick was the one for the original XBOX based off of the State of Emergency engine, if I remember correctly.

Either way, you're fucking right. It was the best of the Evil Dead games so far.
My God, you're absolutely right. It was called Regeneration. I have no idea why Fist Full of Boomstick stuck in my mind. Maybe because it had a catchier, I mean derivative, title.

Man, I suck. But yes. Regeneration was fun.

Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. The third best thing to come out of Voyager (the first two being the Year of Hell and Scorpion two-parters), and still one of my favorite games pretty much ever. I love the greatest hits/everything but the kitchen sink approach to the story and their choices of enemies, from Klingons to Terrans (That Mirror Universe level is geekgasm) to Hirogens to Species 8472. Too bad the sequel was ballsacks however.

Delta Force: Black Hawk Down. Playing Call of Duty 4 reminded me of this one. The Delta Force games have quite possibly the worst AI I've ever seen, but this one still managed to be pretty intense despite that.

Doom 3. I'm still amazed at the bad rap this has with people, I LOVE this game so much. I wish they'd done a Doom 4 that was set on Earth ala Doom II as opposed to Quake 4 which I was not an enormous fan of.

I'd nominate F.E.A.R but I'm not entirely convinced that people hate it, it's just that they've moved on to other games.

Everyone on CHUD already knows Eternal Darkness is one of these, such a bad-ass game, even though the graphics haven't aged too well.

Freedom Fighters was awesome. If it had online multiplayer it could have been one of the greats.
Hybrid Heaven for the N64. Part 3D fighting game, part RPG, awesome storyline and cinematic sequences.

Perfect Dark was one hundred times better than Goldeneye, but gets a fraction of the love. Fuck that.

Tetris Attack is the greatest game of all time ever, yet people act as if they've forgotten about it. Shame on you.

Rampart combined puzzle games with strategy games with shootin' games. It was hella fun, hella tough, and hella fun. Hella.

Embarassing off topic Perfect Dark revelation, I have never beaten the final level. I've beaten almost the entire game on every difficulty level, done everything at the Institute and for some reason that's beyond my comprehension I cannot master how to beat that final boss. It keeps me up at nights.

MDK2 for the Dreamcast is one of those games that did so much right.Looked good, great sound track and voice acting as well as a fun story and satisfying combat.

Arx Fatalis is a game that it seems most people haven't played and that's a shame. The combat system wasn't perfect but it had a unique magic system as well as a wicked atmosphere and an interesting story.
Speaking of the Dreamcast, Wacky Races was the only cart racer I've ever really enjoyed. Maybe that had more to do with resurrecting a treasured bit of my childhood with amazing fidelity, but damn did I waste a lot of time on that game.

I think it's mostly because it had a fraction of the framerate, but yeah, it is better than Goldeneye. The Farsight, Laptop Gun, whatever the missiles you could steer were called, the fact it had bots, all awesome.

I have to say I wanted to love PD, but yeah framerate. I always felt they should have remade the game on the next gen (GC) and kept the game 100% the same. (I never played the XBox sequel but I heard it sucked)

Nevertheless I did have some great memories of me and 2 friends playing team games against the bots (on the morning of my wedding day!)

Oh yeah. I loved Eternal Darkness. That was such an incredible game. It creeped me the fuck out. And I loved it.

I was going to mention it, but I could have sworn it was actually a hit in sales and with the critics.

The Gabriel Knight games. They rocked the shit!
Carmageddon 2 was excessive amounts of fun. So many ridiculous power-ups and a great variety of bonuses for splattering those pesky peds.

Indeed they did, Quarant...although I never finished "Beast Within", and the first one is still my favorite in the series.

Wait a sec- didn't Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast get tons of love? Best game in the series, by far.

I'll nominate Clock Tower III. Also, Eternal Champions on the Sega CD.
The Sega CD, the Saturn, and the Dreamcast could fill this thread on their own.

Did you guys not have the expansion pack? Cuz that was never a problem for me, unless I was trying to do 4 players and 8 bots.
Jedi Knight II got lots of love, but it never got big. I don't know why. At least not big enough to get a proper sequel.

Panzer Dragoon Saga gets lots of love, but hardly anyone cared when it came out. It was overshadowed by Final Fantasy VII and then a couple years later people are all loving it. I wonder how much money my copy could get.
Yeah, I guess it depends on what kind of love we're talking about: critical or popular. There are plenty of games that got great reviews and died on the vine

Even with the expansion pack (which I did have...Shadow Man looked fantastic for its time because of it), PD would slow to a crawl whenever there were more than 3 people onscreen in high-res, and while it moved smoother in low-res, it made the game look like shit. There was just no winning the visual quality war there.

Which is sad because, as has been said, if the game got its graphical shit together, it would easily be up there with the best FPSes ever made.

Back to my earlier post about Sega systems, though...while I'd never in a million years give the 32X more praise beyond "it let me play Doom for the first time", it's a damn shame Knuckles Chaotix is trapped in obscurity on that system.

Secret Of Evermore - Snes
Legacy Of Kain: Blood Omen - PS1
Toy Commander - Dreamcast
Overlord - 360

Im not 100% percent sure if mine were big or not. I just remember my friends never hearing of them or just plain hating them.

I guess I just had the advantage of not having two friends to play it with. I never did more than two player.

I did, and don't get me wrong I played that game a lot. But my overriding impression was they pushed the machine 10% further than it was meant to go. All the cool things in game were tainted by the idea that this would be so awesome on better hardware.

I must also say I was not a fan of Elvis the alien.

I mostly started the post with the topic being games that got mediocre/average critical reviews, yet people here find worthy of more praise; however, the more love for underaprecciated games/systems in this thread, the better.
Id like to add my latest advebture game purchase "The experiment"...most reviews praised its originality but complained about the interface, yet im loving both.

If I recall correctly, you couldn't even do 4 player splitscreen without the RAM pack. I think it was limited to 2 real people and no bots, something weird like that. I'm not even sure if you could play the single player game without the RAM pack, actually.

I always had the bots cranked though. The framerate was a mess, but games of "KILL LUCAS"* were amazing.

*I can't remember the max amount of bots, but all of them but one were midgets with alien heads, set on the weakest setting. The one remaining bot was a Perfect Sim named Lucas. There was a head you could choose that looked a bit like George, and a nice flannel shirt as well.
If you saw him, it was already too late.

Even more so than The Longest Journey?
All the dialogue scenes in The Longest Journey drove me nuts. They went on and on...
I haven't managed to find the X-Box version of Dreamfall yet, so i havent played it.

Grim Fandango - It got rave reviews but no one bought it.
Bad sales for Grim Fandango and Monkey Island 4 killed off the adventure game section of Lucasarts.
Going along with lauded games that sold like rubber sheets, I'd say Earthbound was overlooked during its release. Now we only have that game, and none of the crazy sequels that the kids in Japan enjoy.

I didn't know that. I haven't played the first game. You can find both games on Steam if you want to play it.

Dreamfall is coming to XBLA/has come to XBLA. I'm shitty with dates, but it comes out the first week of April, I believe.
Two games leaped to mind as I read this topic:

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Panzer Dragoon Saga

Both games have their followings, but the mainstream never gave them the respect they deserved. Yoshi's Island is probably my pick for best platformer... ever. And PDS is all kinds of fantastic.
Super Mario World 2 was pretty noticeable IIRC. It wasn't really an improvement on Super Mario World in my mind. On top of which, the baby crying was annoying as hell.

But Earthbound was a crazy little game, only game I know of that came in a huge box with players guide. Of course I hated the scratch and sniff cards that came with it. But man did I enjoy the concept of a modern day RPG.

I never ended up finishing but I got pretty close to the end.I thought it was an above average game.It had a good sense of humour (which I think is rare for a game) and the game-play was enjoyable.I didn't much like the camera and going out and finding the different minions was a bit of a hassle but other then that I liked it.Worth $20 or $30 I'd say.

The first game is exceptional. The dialogue is not a negative aspect of the original.

The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

One of the very best sandbox games ever made. Gameplay isn't simple and surpisingly deep. And the basic fun of destroying everything as the Hulk is a tireless concept. It was well-reviewed, but it should have been coronated. Games about concepts this fun usually aren't very fun. This game was THAT fun, and then some.

And it had Ron Perlman as the Abomination. Plus you fight demon Hulk.

It can be had cheap for the XBOX or the 360 (it's forwards compatible).
