I am as anti-global warming as the next person, but this seems to me like the 21st century version of Hands Across America. I mean, I'll do it, because it requires absolutely no effort on my part, but still, are there satellite photos being taken of this?

You have to love these symbolic gestures; yellow ribbons, hand-holding, candle-lighting. People love to think that saying "we are aware of the problem" means "we are solving the problem".

I'm going to be at a Jens Lekman show, wasting incredible amounts of electricity so that I might be entertained. My lights will be out at home, though. So, uh, yay Earth?

Besides being the kind of moronic empty gesture office dwellers just eat up, this thing will actually do more harm than good.

Not talking about regular household things, but the more complex electronic machinery that will be turned off will only consume more electricity than it spared once it gets turned back on.

I was talking about this with an engineer friend of mine. He said that the juice needed to get a major metropolitan area back online after a total or near total shut down of only an hour would easily surpass what they would have otherwise used.

One way or another, I guess even I can afford some TV ad space during Earth Hour.
Time to get my scam on.

From a news article:

Racism subtext aside, you can see how apart from the clergy no one gave two shits about Oz Earth Hour

Yeah they are trying to make a big deal out of this down here, presumably because it was Sydney's idea, but the Beofre/After shots from the cities are way lame.

I walk past that cathedral each day. There's a busker on an accordion who sits outside and wears Crocs.

Just saying, is all.
