But since you asked...yeah, I *do* think that some--if not most--of those posters probably decided to leave CHUD because it was being overrun by naval gazers and the aggressively unfunny.
But I think the biggest shift wasn't a bunch of people suddenly making bad jokes--like someone pointed out, unfunny never goes out of style--but rather the fact that the bad jokes started getting celebrated, loudly and frequently. It's easy to skim past a few clunkers, but when every thread descends into people quoting, sigging and REP REP REPPING every feeble quip or tired internet meme, it starts to grate. Because it's tough to have a conversation when the laugh track never stops shrieking in your ear.

Ya know, Jer, I tend to agree with that. But there are holes to punch in your argument:
Who made you the be-all end-all judge of what was and wasn't funny? You're the master of your own taste, sure, and goddamit, in your prime you were one of the funniest motherfuckers around (as was Millette). But again, rather than you guys using your own humor to counteract all the people who were "aggressivley unfunny," you deteriorated into a bunch of assholes. And your constant venom, vitriol and general negativity created a much bigger problem than the celebration of bad jokes.
Some people around here, as we've seen a few posts up, deserve to be lambasted and treated to whatever brand of collective vigilance we can muster to protect the atmosphere of what we've created. But, more often than not, it was just you guys doing more to make the problem bigger as opposed to trying to fix it. I guarandamntee you that any one of your patented threads or Brad's one-liners or Whiteheads damn-near impenetrable doses of logic and and common sense would have been enough to eclipse all of the bullshit had you stuck to your guns. But instead of going with the flow of a living, breathing, ever evolving community, you got pissy because things changed and there are new people here and they weren't as funny as your friends and you all threw little tantrums.
Would I rather read your Talking Shit thread instead of seeing Patrick's bony ass photoshopped all over creation? Hell yes. But I'd rather see moderately-funny memes than read another one of your threads telling us all why we fucking suck and why the boards aren't the awesome place you want them to be. Stop whining and lead by example.
