Yeah, I'm lame, but I'm totally addicted to this song.

Every time this song gets into my head, it stays stuck in there for quite a while. I'm providing the link to it in the off-chance that anyone may not have heard it before. This is as wonderful a rendition of an iconic film theme as I've ever encountered. The actual "theme" doesn't begin until 1:05...

Mekong Delta - Interludium (Begging for Mercy)

"Ain't No Grave" - Johnny Cash

WOW... I heard this for the first time just now. Incredible.

Believe me, my wife loves crazy pop/synth/techno dance music, but she can't figure out why I like that song. And I can't either.
It's just painfully bad. And I make no bones about liking Lady Gaga, but what Ke$ha did with that is unforgivable.

Nope, not at all. They good?
After watching Chungking Express yesterday I've had the Cranberries stuck in my head all day. I'd forgotten how much I actually liked DREAMS as a song.

I love the Postal Service album and I'm not a big Death Cab for Cutie fan. It's definitely worth checking out, great album.

It's where Owl City shamelessly stole its entire schtick (starting with a very similar electronic sound, but down to the vocal phrasing). If you like "Fireflies," you owe it to yourself to give them a listen. Their sole album, Give Up, is probably one of the better pop albums of the last decade.
Yeah, do what Dave said. And throw that fuckin' Owl City album as hard as you can into the street.

Mastodon - "The Bit"

I think I actually it like better than the original Melvins version.

I looked it up once I got home and figured out your "not to be douche-y" comment about 3 seconds into "Such Great Heights". I'd just heard the "Fireflies" song while feeding the runts yesterday and it had stuck in my head. I liked SGH, so I'll give Postal Service a listen. But, (this may need to go to another thread) should you stop listening to a song you enjoy when you find out the the artist is a "thief" or a fraud (I still listen to Milli Vanilli occasionally)?

Yes.

No, all great artists are thieves to some extent. Art is a cultural activity, not a solitary one, and attributing greatness to utter, out-of-the-ether originality is a bullshit notion that poets popularized a couple of centuries ago to stroke their egos (as they pilfered and re-tooled the great works of history to their own ends, just as all poets have always done).

More to the point, Rancid made at least two remarkably solid albums on reheated Clash. The difference between them and Owl City is that their work adds some interesting new things to the template. They didn't offer an inferior version of the Clash sound, but a different version of the Clash sound. IMO, Owl City is an inferior version of the Postal Service. Check out the nuance of the production, the intelligence of the lyrics, and the strength of the melodies. The guy who writes and performs as Owl City doesn't add anything new to the Postal Service coloring book; he's coloring within the lines with a smaller box of crayons.

Just because I think this doesn't mean that you should stop listening to it. But I suspect that most active music listeners who listen to Owl City and then the Postal Service will ultimately come to prefer the Postal Service, since there's more to chew on there.
Put simply: Owl City is Postal Service fanfiction. Nobody's going to stop you from enjoying it, but try to extoll its virtues and you'll probably get slapped down pretty quickly.
See, I've never heard of Owl City before this thread. It really is a piss-poor copy of The Postal Service. Damn.
Note: I am not an Owl City fan. I just heard the song, it got stuck in my head and I posted it. It seems playful and innocent, and the twins seemed to bounce along with it well. I'll try to sample more Postal Service tonight.
I've actually never heard either band, but since I can't resist a good brouhaha, now I'll have to sample both; I'm getting a kind of "Curve vs Garbage" vibe here.

Oh, I don't think anyone's pissing on you AD. Hope you enjoy Postal.
I'll only piss on him if he pays me.

"Smalltown Boy"--Bronski Beat

I picked up the Posies' At Least, At Last box, and holy shit, they do a near-perfect reproduction of Cheap Trick's Surrender. I know covers are supposed to say something new about the song, but fuck, it's the Posies covering one of the greatest power pop songs of all time.

I have such a boner right now.

Weird - I just got around to ripping that box to iTunes yesterday. At Least At Last is pretty stellar, but, if you can, I highly recommend getting your hands on another two-disc set of rarities that they couldn't legally include called Limitless Expressions (it was an e-mail list-only thing, but they had a pretty substantial e-mail discussion list so it really got around). Lots of covers, b-sides, and stuff that ended up on compilations. I've seen it floating around file sharing networks.

They do a decent live version of "Surrender" on Alive from the Iceberg, too, but it's a bit looser. I'm really partial to their cover of Blondie's "Dreaming" on At Least At Last.

No luck so far tracking down Limitless Expressions, but I'll keep looking. I've always meant to pick up Iceberg, but I haven't seen it for a reasonable price. It's on my list, though.

Dreaming is fantastic, too, but Surrender is working for me on a meta-level due to its usage in the montage from Conan's first and last Tonight Show.

Looks like Last.fm has the first (and stronger) disc of Limitless Expression available for listening (if not downloading - I've never played with Last.fm, so I'm not quite sure how it works).

Iceberg's okay. As far as official live releases go, I kind of prefer In Case You Didn't Feel Like Plugging In, but that's the band in acoustic duo mode.

While I was listening to At Least At Last the other day, I found the Swedish live in-studio session that yielded "Dreaming" on Soulseek, and it's really good ("I Am the Cosmos" and "Burn and Shine" from the same sessions are on Youtube).

NPR had an album preview for Broken Bells online they other day, pretty solid stuff and I'll be picking it up next tuesday. BTW, are the Shins worth checking out?

Absolutely. Start with their first two albums, proceed with the third with slight caution (it's not as infectiously good as their first two but is still alright). As long as you can divorce the band from the dumb Garden State hype, you'll be fine.

Totally, if you can keep from being mentally annoyed at the "The Shins will change your life!" Garden State nonsense, which I admit can be difficult. Oh, Inverted World is bliss.

EDIT: Beaten by Jake!

Oh my god, WNCW (local npr station) has been playing this song a TON the last couple weeks. I liked it at first, but after hearing it about a hundred times I've grown tired of it kinda.

I can see how that would happen. Really fun album, though, besides those songs.
