The Official Steam Update Thread

Didn't see one, figured there'd be a use for one.

I know people have had their fair share of problems with Steam in the past, although I think much of that was due to Half-Life 2's chaotic launch, but I think it's becoming the PC game equivalent of ITunes in a big bad way.

I guess UbiSoft has now signed on to have their games put on Steam, Far Cry and Splinter Cell are the first two up and you can pre-order Assassin's Creed for download on April 9th.

I see a lot of console threads on here, any PC gamers use this service as religiously as I do?

There was a previous thread about a Chud Steam group.

I log on Steam often to check out new games and stuff. I just bought Audiosurf off it a few days ago (most satisfying 10$ purchase of my life). I don't do multiplayer too much though.

But, yeah, Steam has come a long way from the Half-Life 2 debacle. It's pretty essential right now if you're a PC gamer. Once I upgrade my DSL to 24 mbit I'll even stop buying games retail.

For this weekend only the old school top-down shooter Shadowgrounds: Survivor only for $4.99. I haven't yet played this myself, but I've heard good things about this game developed by the Finnish company Frozenbyte.

After playing through the first episode I'd say Shadowgrounds is well worth the purchase. It's like the original Doom, but from a top-down perspective and with good graphics and a simple character development system.

I love Steam, and use it regularly. All pc games should have the option of being delivered this way.

A recent gem I found on there was a space sim called Darkstar One. Good, old-fashioned Wing Commander-style gameplay, with some Privateer trading/pirating/bounty-huntering thrown in. I think it was $9.99. First time I've used my old force-feedback joystick in ages.

I remember enjoying the demo, think I'll go pick this up. Thanks for the heads-up, Timo.

Being starved for space sims I bought this full-price when it came out. It starts pretty good but it gets kind of repetitive about half-way through. Still, at $9.99 it's a very good buy.

All id games are 50% off this weekend at Steam. I just bought Quake I & II. Damn, I think I could play through the first episode of Quake with my eyes closed. I don't think I've ever played any single player levels of any game as many times as these.

I finally installed Steam last weekend when PORTAL was on sale for $10. The download was pretty slow for me, but I eventually got it. Still need to play the game, though.
