The Russ Fischer Appreciation thread

Thread Starter
Of all the writers on CHUD, I feel Russ never gets his propers. Jeremy is praised for his wit and effortless references to obscure films, Dre writes with such whimsy that he can make Horton Hears a Who's opening weekend take seem entertaining, Devin is a divisive figure who's aggressive contempt for some films and people would be unbearable if it wasn't for his equally aggressive love and passion for other films and people, Nick can make with the jokes, and they all have rightfully earned their fair share of praise and criticism for it.

Somewhere along the line, in between Micah leaving and now, Russ' writing has become brilliant. Everything he writes, from his reviews to his articles, are bursting with insight and intelligence. Somehow, when I wasn't paying attention, he became the best writer on the site. I didn't even notice it til Spike pointed it out to me in chat. He's not flashy and never calls attention to himself, he participates in film discussion on the boards with little ego, he just does what he does, and does it well.

So this is to you, Russ. Way to go.

This thread is just begging to get RipRolled.

I don't know, but over the last year or so, Russ has really emerged as my favorite voice on the main page. I mean, don't get me wrong; Jeremy and Devin are capital-g Great, Nick is hilarious (even though some of his humor is lost on me), Dre can definitely hold his own, and the jury is still out on Phil, but Russ is just out there doing his thing, and doing it VERY well. Russ, I raise my glass to you (even though I don't drink). Keep up the excellent work, sir.

I was reading the Rolling Stones piece Russ just posted and thinking this exact same thing.

New crush, Ripoli?

Sixthed. Russ wrote some stellar reviews last year - I passed his Jesse James review to non-CHUD readers. I enjoyed the shit out of his Toronto Fest coverage. And he seems to lack a douchebag gene, whcih is always nice. Good stuff, Russ. Cent'anni.

Seventeth?

Russ is awesome. He's the balance between Jeremy, Nick and Devin. And that's a great middle point to be at.
If I were a picnic table, I would totally let Russ fuck me.

God damn it, Cobretti. Why must you say everything so much better and more eloquently than everyone else? I mean, look at that...short, sweet, to the point, calling back to another thread, and absolutely perfect for this one. I love you and hate you all at once.

Huh? He's always been brilliant, if understated. He's the Secret Weapon.
Most of the main page authors have become less and less readable over the years. Russ is one of the few who has gone the opposite direction.

But, he doesn't like the film Aliens.

Don't get me wrong, there's not a writer at this site I don't enjoy reading, but this is exactly why Russ is my favorite.

Agreed. I miss the Videodrome articles.
Only at Chud could someone like Russ be considered the mild-mannered one. Along with Alex, he never disappoints on the main page and message board alike. Now get the guy on the podcast already.

But seriously, Russ is a champ and always delivers the goods in his articles. Keep up the great work!
Excellent thread. And for a very deserving guy who deserves all the props and all the posts this thread can hold. Here's to you, Russ!
Although I've disagreed with him once or twice, Russ is indeed an excellent writer, and definitely holds his own with the other Chud heavyweights.
I first noticed Russ a few years ago when he was a shy and unassuming contributor who wrote a great review for the Bruce Willis film HOSTAGE. Ever since then, it has been a joy to watch him develop into such a strapping example of film writing and criticism. His articles and reviews display a muscular prowess that is a sight to behold. The guy is like a well-oiled machine.

Seriously, CHUD has a lineup the rivals the '27 Yankees. Or, at least, the '72 A's.

Same here. That was wonderfully insightful. And Russ, I really appreciated the fact that you could admit to not understanding all of it, given the generation gap separating us from the immediacy of some of the content. That honesty only served to highlight your ability to shed new light on the film from a modern perspective. Great job.

Yeah, those Rolling Stones pieces are great. Russ has always been great, although I did like him that much more when he was rocking the Buckaroo avatar.

I'm too lazy to dig up the link, but his viewpoint on A Clockwork Orange summed up how I felt about that film in ways that I could only dream of being able to express.

I'm greatly intrigued by this.

And the Rolling Stone series is really demonstrating how strong the writing on this site really is. Fucking great job, Russ.

I think over the last eighteen months Russ has become the one writer on Chud who I actively read even if articles and reviews wouldn't normally appeal to me. You just need to look at his Funny Games review to see how he is quietly bringing his a-game to everything he writes.

Yes.
Russ is friggin' tops. Love his writing.
I love Russ's writing enough that I'll forgive the Aliens thing. It's hard, but I can move past it. He's worth it.

*Fucked up*

Russ is awesome. Move on.

If he's as good in the sack as he is at writing... I dunno Trejo. All I'm saying is it could happen.

Seriously, Russ is pretty fucking great. And yeah, whoever said it earlier, it's weird to think of him as the mild-mannered one. But I guess that's what you get when the rest of the staff has more personality than every other movie site combined.

Plus, he's all over the place: the guy's making great posts in just about every forum section. He's great.
When I first saw the Stones series, I thought to myself..."Gee, I hope Russ covers Cocksucker Blues."

Thankfully, I come to find he is. We all win.

Would agree, and mean it as a compliment when I ask "where the sweet fuck is part two??" I looked, it didn't seem to turn up for me.
Ditto. Russ, part two link up side my face. Please.
Fuck. Yes. If CHUD was the Titanic, then Beaks is the stately captain up at the helm with his encyclopedic knowledge of the subject, Nick is Jonathan Hyde pressuring him to go faster, Devin's up in the crow's nest scoping out hot chicks and making snide remarks about them to Alex (fuckin' guineas), Rath is an uptight, upset Billy Zane while Smilin' Jack Ruby fucks his girlfriend in the back of a Model T, Phil is that big fat chef, all the message board joes are dancing in steerage while Moltisanti and Duke Fleed armwrestle and DaveB plays ceilidh music, the upper crust Dellamorte types drink snifters of brandy upstairs while smoking fine cigars and discussing the affairs of the day, Slater is running around in a sweat declaring there aren't enough lifeboats, and while all this is going on Russ is down in the engine room shoveling the coal that keeps the whole thing fucking going.

What were we talking about again?

Oh yeah, and what the hell ever happened to Vinton? He was cool.
Yes, but I have a child, Stormin. I have a child here! And I'm all she's got in the world.

Russ is great. Why are we still talking about this?
Everything said so far is correct. Keep up the good work Russ.
Russ is good peoples.
Not only is he a fantastic writer, but he's the coolest of cool people to chat with. For a relative noob to writing for Chud he's already helped me out countless times when I've had trouble or needed advice. Nothing but love for the man.
Never heard of him.
Yep, my favorite Chud writer.

Totally. Russ is as awesome BTS as he is on the front side. A helluva writer and a helluva guy to work with.
He brings the good, always enjoyable reading.
On top of being a great writer, he was also kindly working in the trenches during the revamp. I must have PM-d him ten times about getting my reviewer account set up, and he didn't even make a single 'stop being a retard' comment, which was nice of him.

Eileen will need a thread at some point, as she's also a behind-the-scenes superhero.
The guy can write AND he's a Don McKellar fan. On top of that, he helped usher Session 9 into existence. All pluses in my book.
