Pregnant dude on Oprah

I just felt like I sat through a really strange, but hot biology class. Thomas Beatie aka the pregnant man was on Oprah today to discuss...well...the fact that he's a pregnant transman! The audience was shocked when Oprah announced that Thomas was knocked up. I don't know why! I've seen manlier woman. I mean...have you seen Chastity Bono lately? Speaking of, Thomas' wife has that total power lesbo look down. You can tell she wears the pants in the family. That's why he's the one carrying the baby. She's too manly for that shit!

So basically, this is what I learned:
  • Thomas' clit is like a mini-dick (like Chyna Doll's)
Thomas got pregnant through a donor...DUH
Thomas had his breasts removed...DOUBLE DUH
    Thomas' baby is healthy
    Thomas doesn't have a peen
Thomas' power lesbo wife has two daughters from a previous dude
Thomas' dad is not into him being a dude or being knocked up
Thomas is kind of hot and I'd totally hit it. Not pregnant Thomas! Although, that might be kind of freaky sexy.

I can't wait for TyTy's broke version of this. She's going to go undercover as a pregnant man to see what it's really like. She's going to cry and say it was the hardest time in her life. She's probably holding a meeting about it now.

Oh and I also learned that Thomas used to be a really gorgeous ass chick.....

Here's a clip from the show of Thomas and his wife going in for their ultrasound. I swear I thought their doctor was Linda Tripp for a minute.
Apparently this person...

...transformed into this person!

I'm all for people doing what they need to in order to feel whole, but this is some trippy shit. Video of the Oprah show in link.

Awww, I love this story. Is it wrong that I don't even find this unusual? My best friend is trans so I know a LOT about it. If anyone is interested it's quite a fascinating topic to study, just goes to show how complex and varied life on this planet can be.

It's really no big deal in the end, I'm just happy to see people finding peace and love any way they can.

I work with trans-individuals as well. It's still weird to see a man pregnant (and I do consider him a man).

You could have linked to an article that wasn't quite so homophobic, then. Just saying. Or it could have gone in the original thread. Either or.

That author isn't homophobic, just gossip site snarky. She goes after everyone straight or gay. But I linked to the site because that's where I found the info. Plus the bit about Tyra Bank's made me laugh.
But this is creepy gay.
Confusing as heck is the correct term.

All right. I just thought the overall tone was kind of mocking. The Banks bit was moderately funny. I concur.

The birth of this child has the ability to unite the entire planet and show us all how amazing the human race can truly be. Or it'll just drip out of the dude's womb like strawberry jam and embarrass everyone involved.

Well, there's always that.

Talk about getting Peaceboned. Am I right?! I'm sorry.

I'm curious about something though. Her wife/life partner is a lesbian, but to me the pregnant person looks very male. Isn't that kind of un-lesbian of her? Not all gay women look like hot strippers I know, but I find it odd that a lesbian wants to spend her life with someone that resembles a guy that much. I'm really curious on the thought process there.
Well, I can't speak for her but I know some lesbians like very butch women, so maybe that's part of it. He still has lady parts so it would work that way too. Also, no one is really 100 percent straight or 100 percent gay, we're all varying shades of gray. So, I guess this just works out for her, it takes all kinds.
So Thomas still has a Vag ? So really he's not a prego dude he's a prego titless chick with a beard thats about to drop a kid, right? Thats not big news. That shit happens all the time in Ohio. Shit the girl I took to prom has 3 kids and looks like Robin Williams now.
What messed up is that a chick could be flat as a board and they would still would censor her nipples, yet this vagman just goes around flashin' the nips. If one woman can claim to be a man and not have her nipples censored then all nipples should be uncensored.

Nipples for everyone! MikeShaynePI '08.

Brought to you by the people for the equality of nipples.
This is the one time I'm okay with the fact my wife Tivo's Oprah. I'm going to watch this shit tonight.

One thing I'm curious about, though. I'm assuming this ladyman is on some kind of hormone replacement therapy. Would the therapy have an adverse effect on the fetus? Would she need to stop the therapy while she's knocked up? Maybe this is addresssed on the show.
I think she stopped taking the hormones in preparation to get pregnant, Gravedigger.

Yup. He stopped the hormone treatment.

By the way if people are interested in this topic, Oprah also did a show on intersexed people. These are people who are genetically male (XY) or female (XX) but due to abnormal sex hormone development, have genitals that look like the opposite sex or which look neither male nor female. There is some debate over whether parents should "correct" nature's mistakes and those who say "This is who we are. This is normal." Here's a link to the Oprah episode "Growing up intersexed".

Oh ... so he's a man. But not really a man-man. That makes more sense. It couldn't possibly have been a Schwarzenegger in "Junior" situation.

The technical term is that Thomas is transgendered. According to wiki:

Quote:
Transgender is the state of one's "gender identity" (self-identification as male, female, both or neither) not matching one's "assigned gender" (identification by others as male or female based on physical/genetic sex). "Transgender" does not imply any specific form of sexual orientation; transgender people may identify as heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, pansexual, polysexual or asexual.

If he had undergone a sex organ reassignment procedure, he would them be labeled a transsexual.
She's not a man. Men don't have vaginas. It's science.
In the eyes of the law: Male

Biologically (Because of the sex organs): Female

Either way, not really an issue of concern. Because as Diva has just stated, he's transgendered.

Actually that's not science. As I mentioned above, your sex chromosomes determine scientifically whether you are a man or woman. And it is quite possible to have an XY chromosome and have a vagina.
Do you mean someone who is XXY or someone whose ovaries became testes but failed to move. Because I remember an ER episode that dealt with that.

During the first trimester, male and female fetuses have the same exact sex organs. Certain hormones must be released that tell the fetus to develop a penis or develop a vagina. For some people, the hormone is never released or is blocked from attaching to whatever cells its needs to and the corresponding sex organs never develop. So a person with XY chromosomes may actually develop a vagina or vice versa.

I won't go into another possibility which is that the proper outer sex organs develop, but the inner sex organs (testes, fallopian tubes) don't. There's so many things that have to happen at the exact right time during human development, that it is surprising to me that there aren't more intersexed, hermaphrodites, etc. people out there.
Probably because inbreeding is kept to a minimum amongst other things. But I'm not a scientist, so I couldn't have a really good answer.
Thread Starter
It really has nothing to do with inbreeding. I'm just talking about the number of factors that have to be just right in order for certain things to take place in normal human development and the probability that things can go awry at any given moment just by chance.
I think part of the reason why it seems like the numbers seem low is because you're not considering the other posibilities that can come out of all the factors not lining up.

If you add in other birth defects, stillbirths, miscarriages, twins, etc., I think the numbers fill out a bit more.

Or, maybe there are more intersexed or hermaphrodites, etc. out there, they just choose not to come out in the open for fear of persecution.

I read this entertaining book on mutations a few years back, and it made this exact same point.

It's not just inbreeders or drug users who have kids with genetic anomalies. There are an incredible number of factors that play into human development, and if just one little component fires up at the wrong time, it can have enormous consequences. Not necessarily to negative effect, either. The book makes the point that we all have traits that are the result of mutations in our genetic line at some point.

In any case, even biological gender is a lot more complicated than having or not having a penis.

Good point. If you take into account physical and mental disabilities the numbers increase. Although I would say that part of this increase is related to industrialization and the toxins in our air and water related to that.

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. I'm fascinated with this stuff because its an interesting topic. But I've also had to teach human development as part of my Psych of Women's class.

These. Both of them. It's definitely not as simple as having an innie or an outie(think of the transgendered folk who were born one way or another and couldn't stand being in their own skin until they made the change), and people do tend to misunderstand quite often how easy it is for genetic mutations to occur.

Reading all this, I'm so glad all I needed were braces on my teeth and glasses. The tendency to gain weight at the drop of a hat? Yo, right here. I'll take it, thanks.

Is it offensive to call her a "she"? She might want to look like a man, but her "gender identify" is officially confusing, because men don't want to get pregnant. What I mean is, I understand somebody feeling they're a man or a woman (or wanting to be one) but have a different gender, but this individual seems to want to be both a man and a woman.

Sorry for being the caveman here.

Thomas identifies as a man. That;'s all that matter to me. Just as Obama identifies as Black even though biologically he is multiracial.

Thomas only agreed to get pregnant because his wife is unable to and they both wanted a biological child. Otherwise I dont think it would have ever crossed his mind.

Hey, that's a very legimitate question to ask if you're unsure. I mean christ, how else are you supposed to know?

Someone with a vagina and female sex organs got pregnant? STOP THE GODDAMN PRESSES!

Of course it can. You've never seen Vag-In-A-Dish.

Also, what Diva said yet again. It's good to have something like this happening and for people to be talking about it and acknowledging it, because it's one fraction of a slow, lurching shuffling step toward the far-away goal of society finally shedding the bullshit stigma against the GLBT community.

Not that I fully expect people to be having rational discussion about this, mind you. Most of them are probably just looking at their ordeal like they're a couple of sideshow freaks.

So I googled Vag-in-a-Dish because I was convinced someone had come up with this idea already and the first thing that came up was this:
How can I make my vagina taste and smell good?

It's a legitimate question, but I don't think I would be asking the yahoos who frequent Yahoo for an answer.

That douchebag who told her to spray her vagina with cherry flavored Chloroseptic should be hunted down and sterilized so he doesn't breed any more idiots like himself.

Those are easy enough to laugh off. I find comments like "dont have sex you're going to regret it for the rest of your life time and so will your future husband" more offensive.

Agreed, the whole "omg ur under 18 don't be having the secks but this is how you make your bajingo all tasty" was pretty weird. I guess people might use that as a disclaimer on those sorts of boards, but it was still kind of a wtf moment for me.
Yeah, I see your point, and they're stupid comments either way. It just concerns me that if she's dumb enough to ask that kind of advice on Yahoo!, what if she's dumb enough to use the Chloroseptic on her "bajingo"? (Jake! I love it, and I'm *using* that!)

A person needs to know never to ask important stuff on Yahoo! questions. The only question I've ever asked on Yahoo! is if anyone knew what lipstick Courtney Love was wearing at the Oscars the year that The People Vs. Larry Flynt was up for the awards. I think it was "Crackwhore Red", but that's besides the point.
