Eva Cassidy

If ever there was a musical what if, Ms Cassidy must've fit the bill. Goddamn did she have a voice though. I don't think I've ever heard a more moving version of 'Somewhere over the rainbow' than Eva's, although the majority of Eva's song catalogue consisted of covers, she still imbued them with her own style.

She's very good, not great. I dare say she's overpraised. I dig more of her quirky covers (like "Drowning in the Sea of Love" and "True Colors" and one other I can't remember at this point) than her standards. And "Fields of Gold" is pretty much sonic death. Also, Rufus Wainwright and Jane Monheit do better "Over The Rainbow" covers than her.

Well, that's one of the problems of dying young, the hype has grown over the years, I still think her cover of Somewhere is one of the greatest ever recorded.

I've always liked the version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
