Mercenaries 2: World in Flames - Page 2

Just Cause is a franticly fun game which is nearly destroyed by two of the most wretched checkpoint races ever. One of them has one checkpoint that is almost impossible to hit within the time limit given even if you've got a perfect run going on.

As such the idea of timed checkpoint races fills me with dread and apprehension.

Edit: And that paragraph from Russ is why I never preorder games...shit.
re: timed races -- there's only been one so far that is essential (you'll find quite a few optional timed skill challenges) and it's not the worst thing in the world. It just doesn't really fit.

There's also the fact that you can customize vehicles to some extent, which I've done very little of so far. Perhaps once I get into that more I'll have a better time exploring the world.
The problem is, I never liked Just Cause either.

My fears are correct, it's a barren uninteresting world with some wonky physics.

Fuck's sake, I guess it'll be a rental. I simply have to play this.
So I forgot I reserved this like 9 months ago. Guess I'll be picking it up on Sunday. I loved the first one, and this one looks like more of the same.
Has anyone reviewed this yet? Its on shelves everywhere but I fear Russ's take on it.
If there are, they aren't on gamerankings.com.

I really hope it doesn't suck though. So many games, so little money.

It's on sale already?!? Dammit, this is so tempting, but I'll be pissed to buy a POS. I have an astonishing track record and like to keep it as such concerning video game buys.
Sunday morning it's on sale. I got the call today.
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/902/902767p1.html

IGN Reviewed it: 7.9

Said that it was fun, had it's bugs, and is decent co-op online. Had no idea that the game had that. Figure it will play like the first one, which had it's share of issues as well. But it's fun to play.
Yeah they said its glitchy and unpolished. I'll pass.
I can live with glitchy and unpolished and despite all of the complaints about voice acting that review does make the game sound insanely fun.

I cannot agree more.

Some of my favourite games of recent times have lacked polish and have been glitch-filled (I'm looking at you STALKER).

I don't think you've made a mistake pre-ordering, Spike.
The thing is that I know someone else who has preordered and who is chomping at the bit for co-op, so even if the single players wretched the co-op should spruce things up. I also like that damage done to the world is persistent during sessions.
I don't think the single player's as bad as the reviewer says it is, simply that the co-op is the more obviously fun.

Looking back at games like Halo, the co-op was really the only time I was having fun anyway. Is it split-screen co-op too? I've read conflicting things about this and didn't notice it while skimming that review.
It's not bad, but it's not worth full price. Wait till $29.99.
I'm having some fucking fun with the game. I didn't know Stormare was doing voice work on it and it makes it all the cooler for it. I like that I can pick it up, play it, and not feel like I'm fighting with the interface/camera as I was with GTA 4. So far nobody on my friends list is playing this so no co-op yet.
I'll be on later. Bought it earlier today, and will probably try it in a few hours.
Pretty fun if not polished at all. Although....

I tried for ever to get into a multiplayer game tonight, and no go. Even when invited. So that sucks...
I wish I noticed that you could change the wager of those training games. I could've made some decent coin on any of the tier 1 challenges...the Laser Guided bomb challenge has that burnout crash juntion addictiveness. Wish there were more in the same vein.

Are online games dependent on EA's totally reliable servers? Sucks you couldn't join in on the gay viking bike tour of Venezuela again Rob.

Is this a short game? I've only just demolished those 13 buildings, captured the 10 hvt's, and secured 3 outposts yet the stats screen show 46% completion rate.
It looks gorgeous, and I bought it for my brother, so I have to know:

Is it any better than the first game? It was buggy as hell, but it had charm. I really don't mind if it's just an upgraded version of the first.

As long as there are no more Koreans yelling "tann ja!"

Got kind of old. Racist and old.
I'm not upset I bought this, at all, but where did the need for all those delays come in at? There is zero finesse or polish to this fucker. Still a TON of fun. And it looks like no cheat codes are out there yet. If that holds true, I'm going to be very sad. I had more fun using cheats in Mercs 1 and running around carpet bombing North Korea into oblivion than I care to admit.
As narrow and glitchy and unpolished as this is, I have to say...there's something wonderful about taking out targets by using an unarmed transport copter to drop one-ton fuel tanks on their heads.
I almost bought this over the weekend. Kinda glad I didn't, from what I'm hearing and reading, probably one of those games I would regret dropping $60 on. Can't go wrong with a rental, or I'll wait for a sale or price drop. Hoping we'll see a demo of it soon, I see the commercials and just want to play it.
Love those ads: "Oh no you didn't...."

I'll wait on this one. Sounds like a $30-$40 game to me.
I believe the song is available for free on the Pandemic/Mercs 2 site, for those interested.
Got to hand it to Pandemic for letting you view the gamertag of a multiplayer match you want to join up to. In no time I was paired with some dude who had that viral achievement...you can get it that way or join me sometime this weekend.
If anyone wants to join up, I have the achievement as well. Gamertag is Muharulz.
Damn. From the 5 out of 10 Gamespot review:

Quote:
The problems just keep on coming. Helicopters will vanish with you in them; turrets will float in midair; people you're supposed to rescue will drown themselves or run face-first into the helicopter rather than get in; and allies will shoot at you for no reason. Combat falls flat because shooting guys takes longer and is more difficult than simply running up to them and killing them with one punch; helicopters will often drop off support troops on rooftops, where they'll either get stuck or plunge to their deaths. Enemy soldiers respawn in gun towers even after you've taken over an outpost; they can shoot through walls and often appear out of thin air, too. Civilians will run right in front of you when you drive, costing you 5 grand each time you hit them; your helicopter pilot will sometimes fail to show up, or will drop your cargo where you can't get to it. You might even be unlucky enough to have the game crash during a load screen; or to be told that you're dead when you clearly have health left, forcing you to restart. You might even lose progress due to a save game failing. The list of bugs and problems really is staggering.
As a guy who spent his formative years playing on the PC I can deal with bugs, what I can't deal with is the fact that apparently the games online element is REGION LOCKED. And I was kind of looking forward to hooking up with some chewers and nuking Venezveula.

Also apparently EA are in a lot of bother due to a promotion in London that went awry. They were apparently giving away £20,000 worth of petrol and caused massive snarl ups.

I saw the exact same ad this morning except with classical music instead of this song. I wonder why the change?

They're playing both, they didn't stop playing the other one. I have no idea why as the footage is EXACTLY the same like you mention. I was watching something on G4 a couple of days ago and saw each of them on back to back commercial breaks.

Those aren't just one-time complaints, either. I've seen all those things happen and more.

One was at least funny: wassname dropped off an attack chopper, but he landed on the sloped roof of a building, and as I wondered how the fuck I was supposed to get up to the chopper it teetered then slid off the roof, exploding on contact with the ground.
Think i'll wait for the immense patch to fix this. Region locked multiplayer can go fuck itself.
Wow they've already started patching the game. Just had some fun riding around with a friend in an armoured car taking on the military.
Me and Nate just spent the last few hours co-oping the shit out of the game. We levelled the first city we came to with impressive results and the missions are already pleasingly manic, loved the Raiders of the Lost Ark truck hijack QTE so much fun.

I have experienced approximately zero of those listed bugs. The only glitches I've encountered are either hilarious (the 'helicopters fucking' bit I mentioned earlier) or negligible.
I'm really enjoyng this, warts and all.
The fuel tanks are dead scary though, you're not sure if you've really damaged them, then, BOOOM. I almost had a heartattack.
Yeah I've not come across any glitches either.

I kind of love the alternate costumes, my Swedish dude looks a bit like Hans Gruber at the moment. Blowing up the gigantic UP building was my favourite moment so far, largely because it kicked off a demolition spree so long and intense that you could see through the first city at one point.
Are the explosions glorious? I want this game quite a bit but I know it's more sensible to wait for the inevitable second-hand flood that will occur very soon.

This is all about the 'splosions!!
Those are some lovely 'splosions.

Thank you.

Are the missions in this even remotely satisfying beyond the things going bang?
I love GTAIV , but I found Mercs 2 missions so far pretty damn good and varied. One of the missions for the Communist rebels had you take out three government controlled buildings in the local town to lure out the local leader. You then have to protect the local church from retaliation attack before you learn the the leader is holed out in the local football stadium.
And best of all, mission checkpoints!
The missions are fucking awesome.

I've only done three so far but they've all been pretty insane and pretty varied.

The first had me attacking several enemy bases to set up some telecommunication relays so that I could triangulate on the mobile phone signal of a kidnapper. I then had to Hijack the van in transit.

The second mission had me escorting an oil executive as he destroys confidential information, which involved a pitched battle with helicopters and tanks and ended up with most of a refinery being utterly destroyed.

The third mission had me testing out a monster truck in a copper mine and the fourth was an assault on an island outpost. And then you have little submissions and stuff.

One of my favourite moments has been in co-op where we devised a plan where my partner would collect a target in a light car and then I'd winch them over to the drop point in a helicopter.
The monster truck race was pretty intense, I made it on my second try with only 3 seconds to spare.
The driving physics felt pretty weird at first, but after I made it through that race with all the crazy shit it throws at you, I really can't fault it.
This has to be the most meta game I've played in a while, for example upon letting the executive die I got this little message

"Argh I've been shot....no blood though....stupid T rating"

And I've come across weird little references to a few games including finding a Mass Effect relay and Prothean Data disc.

Also I managed to destroy that huge bridge you find in the first city, it took a lot of doing but coming back to the city and seeing it still be destroyed each time is just too awesome.
I like that the game lets you cheat in the escort the vip to point x missions. Sure they let you drive the dude there and risk getting blown up by enemy fire...or you could just steal a helicopter and fast travel by air instead.
I actually couldn't get the dude to get into a helicopter, I ended up doing it in co-op and winching my partner and the escort to safety. But yeah the sheer variety of ways you can handle a situation is kind of awesome.
I'm finding the PC version almost impossible to play. It's filled with glitches and it doesn't run smoothly. I know the game is huge, but the graphics are not that great to have it being so heavy and low on FPS ratio.

Also, fuck quick time events. I don't know which damn button i need to press!
Weird, the one really positive thing I’d say about the game is that even when shit is getting hectic and you’ve 9/11ed an entire city the framerate never breaks a sweat and I’ve still not come across that many glitches, although my game does have a tendency to replicate a scene from Planet Terror and make cars I’m walking towards explode.

I honestly don’t know how you’d even attempt to control this sucker with a PC though, it seems designed specifically for Joypads. Also this game has some of the only QTE I actually enjoy and it’s cool that each faction has their own hijacking animation, I’m particularly fond of the way you jam open the hatch with your leg when taking out PLAV tanks.
I saw a tactical nuke vid on YouTube that alone makes this game worth a rent.

Other than that, more of the same from the original? I dug the demolition aspects, but other than that...
