Best Blu-Rays?

Thread Starter
Alright, so I got a PS3 and while I'm not fully prepared to buy every new release in Blu-Ray from now on, I'm wanting to grab one here, another there. I figured my first real purchase wouldn't be until July with the Batman Begins DVD but I am a bit too impatient to wait that long.

So, I'm curious: whether it'd be presentation, features, etc., I'd like to see what the general consensus is in regards to what you feel are the best Blu-Ray movies out there right now.

http://chud.com/forum/showthread.php?t=105291 read but get your hands on Planet Earth.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS is a must have. So's BLADE RUNNER. And I'm told NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN's picture is nothing short of jawdropping. RATATOUILLE (because it's Pix-fucking-ar) to finish.

Close Encounters is $32.95 on Amazon.com ($44.95 at Best Buy). That's a bit much... you guys sure it's worth the price of admission for a movie I've seen dozens of times?

edit

forgot the ? mark

If you have to ask, don't get it.
Starship troopers and Blade runner are excellent examples of Blu-ray goodness.
Now, Blade Runner seems worth it. 5 disc ultimate collectors edition for$66.95

I guess it's up to you. I'm a freak for all things Spielberg, so that was an easy question for me. But the picture's amazing and you get the original theatrical cut which was never released for home theater before.
OOooooooh. That seals the deal for me, I'm very curious what that cut looks like, that's one of the first sci-fi movies I remember watching over and over again. I've printed out the No Country For Old Men coupon from the other thread, when I pick that up this weekend I'll see if Best Buy has Encounters, otherwise Amazon.com it is. Thanks Alan.
Crank is incredibly slick since it's a digital to digital transfer.

Not true if laserdiscs count.
Planet Earth and No Country are the two best titles I've seen so far, but my collection is pretty small.
These are all good choices. Spider-Man 3 might not be everyone's favorite, but it does look really goddamn good in hi-def. Hopefully the enventual blu-ray release of Zodiac will look as good as the HD DVD, which is one of the better transfers I've ever seen.

Edit: Wait, thought of one: Casono Royale was pretty great. And if you don't already own the collector's edition, I'd say go for Oldboy, if you can find it.

Here's a good place to start for Blu-Ray reviews:

'Casino Royale' - I'll second the recommendation for that one. 'Blade Runner' should be your absolute first purchase, however.
2001 looks amazing.
I'll 3rd Casino Royale, but Planet Earth should be on the list. Ratatouille looked soo good, it had my dad sit down to watch (he thought it was disney it had to be bad, but he likes it now).

I say also hit up AVSForum.com, it will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know. I also lurk there as well dropping some and taking some wisdom. If you don't mind the entire Pirates of the Caribbeans, they are quite jaw dropping in terms of audio and video.
Ratatouille is indeed fucking incrediblel looking. As are all Pixar HD films.

Satellite HD usually suffers from compression issues, and I only saw it in 720p, but this was the first film that sold me on HD. It was fucking amazing looking in those conditions, so running from a disc in 1080p it might be enough to make my eyeballs melt.
But more importantly, how does Commando look on blu-ray?
I have it on order. I haven't heard fantastic things, but I hear the high-definition leatherdaddy outfits are glorious.
Besides the movies mentioned, The Fountain and The Host look great and are great movies. Sunshine looks great, but has 3rd act problems, other then that a great movie and worth having if you want something very visual.

Planet Earth is an essential.

I agree with all this - although after seeing host, it's kinda hard to recommend - I want to, but the CGI (being the selling point) really didn't do it for me.
The selling point of The Host is not the CGI.
Yeah, I'm gonna have to go with Dellamorte on this one...
I have heard Gattaca is pretty damn crisp
post #28 of 46
No Country and Blade Runner are the best film to HD transfers I've seen on the format thus far, 2001 and Ratatouille are glorious as well. Planet Earth is a no brainer.

And yes, Gattaca looks really nice considering the year it was released.

Worst transfer: Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

I have no first-hand experience, but I've read the initial(and only?) T2 Blu-Ray looks rather poor too.

EDIT:

I've gone back and read Alex's review and... upon reflection, it's the cinematography I think that justifies the blu-ray purchase, as opposed to the CGI. They did pretty well on the budget they had.

My issue is that I disagree with his review about it "working" as a story, but only because I couldn't get into the flow of the ridiculous comedy elements thrown in with the stuff that was supposed to be powerful.

Which I guess isn't worth discussing here, since we're talking about the transfer. The opening shots on the bridge in the rain are incredible. However, the closing sequence with the fire is particularly poor - and shows more in a higher definition.
Also, the original Fifth Element transfer is apparently the worst offender of the lot.

I've got 16 Blocks and Gangs of New York sitting at home waiting to be watched, i'll give my feedback on the transfer later.
Most of the recommendations here have been spot on, and while Blade Runner, Ratatouille, and Planet Earth are at the front of the line for must buys, I'd add Galapagos and Pan's Labyrinth to the list. The high-def picture on Galapagos gives Planet Earth a run for it's money, and Pan's is an incredible film perfect for high-def with an enormous amount of worthwhile bonus features.

I'd say that Casino Royale, the POTC trilogy, and Spider-man 3 are all great demo discs.

Word is the best transfer to date is I, Robot. Seriously. What the fuck?
The transfer of Pans is particularly excellent. They should all look that good.

16 Blocks, whether you like the film or not, whilst a decent transfer, has a really bland palette - which made any high-definition benefits more subtle.

Mos Def's voice is not pleasant in any sound format, but the sound quality's very good.

No Country's transfer eclipses I, Robot.
Gangs of new york's transfer is impressive. I envy those of you who get to see it in 1080p, as interlaced looked like it's struggling in the opening fight.

For some reason, I was disappointed with the sound. What's everyone outputting through with their setups?
How did you get Gangs of New York?!?
UK gets it before the US does according to people whinging on IMDB.

I really really love this film. I got it through my DVD-rental service yesterday.
The Searchers is blowing my mind. And that's after watching Black Hawk Down. Blade Runner, The Searchers and Ratatouille would be my demo 3-some.

Ah, I did no realize you were a Brit. I'm hoping to get a review copy of GONY, and I'm happy to hear it looks better then the lackluster DVD release.

Watched my first blu-ray, The Shining on my friends 65" HDTV in glorious 1080p seated in a comfy recliner.

Those twins never looked more terrifying.
I'm personally still a little iffy on the widscreening of Shining and Full Metal Jacket after pre-death Kubrick distinctly said he wanted them full frame.
The Kubrick ratio argument is the only thing I agree with the studios on particularly Strangelove.

Kubrick died before the HDTV transition. Also he made that statement over 30 years ago. The truth is he framed his films for both aspect ratios. The new Kubrick DVDs look great, btw. I imagine the BRDs look phenomenal too.
He ensured that the original releases of FMJ and The Shining were full frame on DVD. That's not 30 years ago. I'm just saying.

Best place to find info on PQ and AQ for Blu Ray.

the 5 must haves IMO-
2001 Space Odyssey
Corpse Bride
Ratatoullie
Pirates
Fantastic Four Silver Surfer(shity movie, but amazing transfer)
That list only got one thing wrong from what I've seen - Crank. Crank was a pretty average transfer.
