Poll of historians: Bush worst president ever

History News Network says:

A Pew Research Center poll released last week found that the share of the American public that approves of President George W. Bush has dropped to a new low of 28 percent.

An unscientific poll of professional historians completed the same week produced results far worse for a president clinging to the hope that history will someday take a kinder view of his presidency than does contemporary public opinion.

In an informal survey of 109 professional historians conducted over a three-week period through the History News Network, 98.2 percent assessed the presidency of Mr. Bush to be a failure while 1.8 percent classified it as a success.

Asked to rank the presidency of George W. Bush in comparison to those of the other 41 American presidents, more than 61 percent of the historians concluded that the current presidency is the worst in the nation’s history. Another 35 percent of the historians surveyed rated the Bush presidency in the 31st to 41st category, while only four of the 109 respondents ranked the current presidency as even among the top two-thirds of American administrations.
The comments section for the article is amusing, too.

In other news, water is wet.

This just proves why nobody asks historians math questions. My favorite part is the 2 charts showing the same data using different chart types that are totally unnecessary.

The "poll" basically reads like an online poll you would expect in a place like Ain't it cool news.

Sometime after Katrina, Rolling Stone ran a big article in which a number of historians broke down the reasons why Bush is in fact the worst president ever, or, if not, no. 2 behind Andrew Jackson.

The fuck did Andrew Jackson do? How was he worse than James "Let the South Break Away" Buchanan?

His genocidal policies against the Native American, more extreme than any president in history, for starters.

Hmm... you have some reading to do.

I love how the Fed's strongest opponent wound up on the $20 bill. Oh sweet revenge!

I can't believe Rath made two posts about Andrew Jackson, without mentioning the Big Block of Cheese.

Best comment:
"All you liberals think the same. With all your books, you don't recognize a great leader when you see one. Iraq War is making the country safer because Ben Ladin and the other are there like hornets. And they would be here if not for the war. Sure some people die, but it's war, dummy. Saddam Insane attacked us on 911 and now you guys want to coddle him and read him his rights. I am not rich, but I know that God made Bush president for a reason, and that is to make the country better for us. You guys are just mad that you didn't get elected and didn't win. I still have my W sticker on my bumper."

What I love about that is how she thinks Saddam is still alive.

Jackson was awful towards Native Americans (hello, there, Trail of Tears!), and he started the quite ill-advised spoils system, but he generally scores points for destroying the national bank and increasing the power of the presidency. Most historical polls I've seen rank him as one of the best, not one of the worst.

Maybe you're thinking of Andrew Johnson, Rath, who is routinely marked low for his handling of Reconstruction which, while admirable in its conciliatory policies towards the South, generally castigated freed slaves as second-class citizens and paved the way for (and in some instances created) Jim Crow laws that would dominate the South for the next, oh, century.

I just love these 2 charts, it's like somebody just learned how to draw charts in Excel.

I don't think I'd ever see someone manage to overtake Harding as worst president ever, but I suppose Bush's eight years of doing everything he can to rewrite how this country is run trumps Harding's monumental lack of accomplishing anything in the two years he was in office.

Possibly. It makes more sense for Johnson than Jackson, but I'm not sure. I mean, that cheese reeked.
