Saints Row 2

Thread Starter
I think the original thread I made was lost to the ravages of the update. Anyways the game has now been given a release date of sometime in August.

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=130217

Whilst I can't wait for Grand Theft Auto 4 I'm also really excited about this sequel because I honestly think the original game was a great, great, game which got unfairly savaged for its similarites to GTA.

The prospect of playing the entire campaign in co-op is kinda cool too.

Some gameplay videos, a few choice previews, and that leaked list of achievements has bumped this up to a launch day purchase for me (which essentially gives me a week to finish the fucker before Fable 2 hits). Being able to fully customise your dude and then give him a cockney accent whilst he needs Katanas is probably what tipped me over the edge.

So anyone up for some Co-Op mayhem come mid October?
I'm down. I'm one who fully enjoyed the first one.
I am so excited for this game. If it is half as fun as the first one, it'll be worth $60. And the co-op makes it that much sweeter.
I really enjoyed the first game so I'll be picking this one up but with like 3 other games coming out the same month I'm not sure when that'll be.

Likewise, I have to pick this up but it is 3rd on the list after Fable 2 and fallout 3.

I was (oh god, please don't say late to the party) "late to the party" with the original, and I'm just finishing it off now. Love, love, love this game, even with all of its many and glaring flaws. It's like a GTA that just wants to be fun. IGN's review of the sequel sounds promising.

Completely agree.

Want the game, but it couldn't be coming out at a worse time. Anything that I'm not drooling over (Fallout 3) or multiplayer centric (Far Cry 2/GeOW 2) is simply going to have to wait.
It's this or Dead Space next Tuesday, and that will depend upon the Dead Space reviews.
I'll probably wait till the Christmas deals to kick in before picking this up.

Something Awful still has the best take on the game.
I got a promo of this last week, and it's absolutely awesome.
It's packed to the brim with stuff to do, I really love the depth to the customization on your main character. Mine's a gangly, really unsympathetic looking bastard with a british accent.
You get to choose the way you walk ,and everything. In GTA4 I was reluctant to go nuts with Nicco, but here it's a free-for-all, I'm throwing old ladies down stairs with glee.

There's an insane variety in what pedestrians and cops can do, I've seen cops use tazers, pepper-spray and flashbangs. One even ran back to his squad car to get his shotgun. The sidewalks are packed with people, hobos and winos sleep in the alleys. Barbershop quartets and cheerleader squads, you name it. Create enough carnage and nosy pedestrians will take pictures with their mobile phones.

You can wield a katana on your motorcycle while the radio is pumping The Final Countdown.
This game loves you.

Holy. Shit.

That is..... the COOLEST thing I have ever heard in my entire life.

Question vaguely pointed at Overlord- what's the deal with money in the original Saint's Row? I've got around 20 money-generating conquest regions, but every time I go to my "crib" (ugh), I can only take out $2,000 max per day. Is this by design, or am I missing something?
Saint's Row 2 is like a violent puppy dog eager to please you.
Every mission has sensible checkpoints, if you fail you can choose to restart from the last checkpoint or from the start.
It has 3 difficulties, and is over all, very user friendly.
Say you have two henchmen with you, and you jack a two seater car, the remaining henchman will jack a car on his own and follow you.

There's a max to what you can earn per day per crib. Meaning you have to run around from crib to crib (IIRC). I wasn't really focused on money, so I'm not really sure.

Australian review. Sloppy but fun. I hope there's a demo; I suck at aiming on consoles and I want to try it before I buy it.

Yeah, It worked somewhat like that, I think some of the bigger cribs could hold more money.
It works a bit differently in SR2, the most I've picked up was $14 000, and that was in my most modest flat.

I seem to remember the amount of money each crib stops at being proportional to the size of the crib (the bigger the crib, the more money it holds).

I recommend listening to the 80s station as much as possible.
I'm not a big fan of the first one, but the reviews make this sound like a game that follows up on the silliness of GTA 1 and 2(more than GTA itself did), and I don't mean that in a bad way at all.
Damn, this game is stingy with the achievements. I noticed last night that after a total of 15 hours of playing, I've only got 25 points.
So how is the soundtrack to this? I couldn't stand the radio on the first game.

I am kind of amused by Stars and Opeth being on the same station, unless it's a completely different Stars than the Canadian rockers I'm thinking of.
That's "Stars" by a band called Hum.

Man, am I looking forward to this. It sounds like this game will have all of the fun that GTA4 missed out on (great game, don't get me wrong, but I miss the sheer absurdity of the earlier Autos titles).
Soundtrack looks better and much more eclectic. The classical stuff couldn't be any more boring and obvious, but I guess most people don't like classical and just want to blow shit up to Apocalypse Now.
The soundtrack looks good but...."Woman"!?!?!!? Does that have to be in EVERY game now?
Jeez, I'm out of touch. I know all the 80s songs and classical music, but I don't know any of the other songs. Hell, I only recognize maybe five bands/performers.
Can you still create a custom soundtrack from MP3s on your computer or your hard drive?
That's required Xbox360 functionality. There's no in-game UI for it, but then, how many games actually have that in the first place? And you can still buy songs from the music stores and create a custom soundtrack out of those, but those songs don't get stored to your hard drive or anything.

And "Don't You (Forget About Me)" and "Sister Christian" don't get bolded? For shame, Spike.

Well there was an in-game UI for it in the first one. That's why I ask.

Tescos in the UK was selling this by accident for £15 and is now "sold out" and back to the original price.

That's as much a bargain as if it was launched at $15 in the states.

Apparently it's favouring well in metacritic?

I've heard that the majority is identical, but there's an island or a large pier in the south which is a new development.
Eurogamer's opinion on it is exactly how I feel about Mercenaries, which will certainly, for me, overshadow this. I'm glad to see that reviewers are happy to overlook the flaws in a property and see it for what it really is though - fun.

Also, It's nearly time for F3 and LBP.

The west side of the map has been expanded quite a bit (where the mountains that marked the edge of the map in Saints 1 were, there is now a University district, an expansion to the Suburbs, and a Trailer Park), as well as the Museum district, there's a new Marina district directly to the north of Downtown and the High End Retail districts, the Saints Row district itself has been completely redone from the first game, and there are a bunch of underground sections that weren't in the original. There are also two islands that house the Nuclear Power Plant and the prison. It's enough the same that you can use most of the old shortcuts from the first game, but there's enough different that occasionally you'll cut down an alley and find something that wasn't there before.

Busting out of Jail, jumping into a car and Karma Chameleon coming onto the radio as you splat a bunch of SWAT guys is probably the best introduction the game could have. I love this game so much and I'm only on the 2nd mission, just spent like an hour ripping things out of the ground to use as melee weapons. Had an awesome fight against two pimps who were wielding wheelie bins, I ended up beating them both to death with a bench. I'm also playing a burly Cockney who performs a jig to taunt people.
Ha ha, I'm using the same guy Spike. Only I gave mine a Terry Thomas Moustache so he seems like a Gentleman thug.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit though. I spent ages just doing the little mini-games before finding a sword and cutting mother fuckers up while I rode around on my motorbike.

Sure there are flaws in this thing, and it's hardly a pretty game. But there's something appealing about a game that just wants you to have a lot of fun. And though it seems frustrating at times, it's never malicious in that regard.

Throwing a Barbershop Quartet through a succesion of windows, whilst Karma Chameleon plays in the background and I'm dressed like a pirate is perhaps one of the most uncomfortably hip and yet hilarious things I've ever done in a videogame. Saints Row seems to have found a sense of humour.
I've heard a gripe about the game is the soundtrack playing tunes repeatedly unusually often. Karma Chameleon cropping up twice at great moments is normal is it? I heard the same about Final Countdown.

It seems like certain songs are scripted for certain missions. Plus there's only about 10-12 songs per station.

Also the game has the worst Helicopter controls since those RC things from San Andreas. Utterly hateful, the animations when you execute motherfuckers with the Katana makes up for it though
