Cloverfield on DVD

Glad to say, the movie holds up fine at home.

Fantastic bit of extras as well, although the alternate endings might disappoint. Spoiler text- one is just an alternate shot of them on the subway platform at coney island, the other simply has a quick flash of an older guy with a flashlight reaching for the camera between the "I LOVE YOU!" and original Coney island part. Oh, and something definitely came from the sky. You can see it clearly if you know what to look for.
End spoilers.

Going to dive into the commentary now, but man, there's some good stuff in the extras. They do a ton about the special effects, and it's all pretty amazing. Review and a contest coming soon!

I'm going to buy this, then watch it at the end of a marathon that'll include The Thing, The Host and The Mist.

Throw SLITHER in there, and I'll bring the beer.

Order? I say Slither, The Host, Cloverfield, and finally The Mist. From fun and light to depressing.

As for the DVD, I'm really excited to see how they did the special effects. That's one of the reason why I enjoyed the film so much, just imagining how fun it must have been to pull everything off.

I know I'm in the minority here, but omit The Host and I'll bring tacos. Also, promise that The Mist will be in black and white.

Hate to derail, but: why don't you like The Host?

This is going to come off like I'm a mouth breather, but I felt like there was some cultural boundary that I had trouble overcoming. The first 30 minutes of the film were brilliant. I was on the edge of my sofa. And, then, well, I got bored. I had trouble identifying with a lot of the character reactions and interactions. In my humble opinion, some of it came off as too cartoony (and I like cartoons). The only thing I can compare it to is anime and manga in that, while I could sort of appreciate what the artist was endeavoring to do, I felt like I couldn't process it through my particular perspective. It was just a bizarre mix that didn't work for me... and I really wanted it to after all the great things I'd heard.

I agree -I just couldn't get into The Host. I've seen a lot of people applaud the tonal shifts, and I suppose they may work for other people, but they left me cold. Also, I feel like the satire in the film is way too over the top.

I can understand that. I have friends that had trouble discerning what reaction the film was going for at times. As an example: when the family is in the make shift containment/memorial center and mourning the loss of Hyun-seo and falling on top of eachother. It's an uncomfortable moment, but Asian cinema has a tendency to look for the dark humor in sad situations.

So it can be a bit off putting to some I suppose. But I found the family dynamics overall to be very well done.

Awesome DVD. I thought the movie was great but it wouldn't hold up on repeat viewings. I was wrong. The FX featurette is fascinating.

We posted a news item on DVDActive and it became a Cloverfield VS. The Host thing pretty quickly. Then one of the Brit writers submitted a Host review and the same thing happened all over again. I must admit that I fueled the fire. I really like The Host. A lot.

On topic, I'm pretty disappointed with the Cloverfield extras. I'm nearly positive there's a super deluxe edition on the horizon. They didn't even include that awsome on line video of the oil rig going down.

Alex, did you get a regular copy of this or a Blu-Ray? I'm curious if the movie really needs a Blu-Ray treatment (from me), since it isn't exactly shot with the most glossed over visuals. I figure that if it's not really much of a concern, I can stick with the regular DVD and save some money.

Contest! http://www.creature-corner.com/?type=news&id=3353

Oh and Yellowhare, just a dvd for me. My broke ass doesn't have a Blu Ray, or an HD TV, for that matter...

Thanks, Alex.

There is no Blu-Ray release. There was going to be an HD DVD release, but Paramount dumped HD DVD. They haven't picked up Blu-Ray yet, which means we have to wait on hi-def releases of There Will Be Blood, Cloverfield, and Sweeney Todd.

You know, right after I saw this I thought, "Decent, but probably won't own it." But thinking about it and watching the two alternate endings, I think I might pick it up.

Besides, I own the Devlin/Emmerich Godzilla, it's the least I could do.

To make things harder on the consumer- there's going to be four different versions of this hitting various stores

**Target - Target Deluxe Edition includes "Rob's Goin' To Japan Party Mix" music CD.
** The track list for the music CD includes:

* Goldfrapp - "Ooh La La"
* Coconut Records - "West Coast"
* Scissors for Lefty - "Got Your Moments"
* The Vapors - "Turning Japanese"

I've never heard their music, but I always laugh when I see Goldfrapp's name just because of Ellen Page in Hard Candy - "I... fucking...hate Goldfrapp."

Best Buy it is! I'll take special features over crappy swag any day of the week.

What, you don't want that ringtone?

How funny would it be if it was "It's a lion!.... It's a lion!..."

If I owned a cellphone and that was the ringtone, I would consider it.

Tearing through this now. Film does indeed, hold up well on the second viewing. The behind-the-scenes and special effects stuff is really fantastic. There's just a HUGE amount of CG in this film, and I'd say nobody noticed 90% of it. The documentary about creating the creature except for one tidbit that not only made the movie and the creature even better, but automatically got me on board for whenever a Cloverfield 2 happens: The fact that whatever alien species Clovie's from....he's just a BABY.

Alternate endings are pretty weak, though.

I already had stupid reasons for not liking The Host (I was told the special effects were pretty damn impressive). Then when it turned out to be something more along the lines of a spoof, I couldn't quite get my head around it.

Annoyingly, Mrs Bees?! didn't like Cloverfield. She said it was boring.

I haven't had quite an experience at the cinema this year as I did with Cloverfield. I don't think this summer's tentpoles will top it either. I'm glad I saw it with friends and an easily freaked-out crowd. Absolutely brilliant film and I left the screening feeling slightly disorientated.

Just saw this last night. Great movie. I didn't see it in a theatre, sorry to say, so I'm not sure how well it transitions, but it was a great ride from home. It most definitely didn't suffer from "The Godzilla Problem", in that it never got silly. I hope they do make some sequels.

I knew it was too much to hope for, but I don't suppose that Giacchino's Roar! is anywhere on this release, is it?

Are you talking about during the credits? because it's still there. And an extended version of it is on iTunes now.
The latter is what I had in mind. It still wasn't on iTunes last I looked, so that's awesome. Thanks.

Edit:
Just went to iTunes. Still not seeing it. Where is it?

Picked this up the other day (finally). With the 50" screen, HUD's camera work held up surprisingly well.

Matt Reeves has a dry, yet rather informative commentary track. I wish there were other tracks, especially with the VFX and creature design teams. Their featurette was fun to mull through. And I totally agree with the designer's reveal about the monster. Bring on the sequel. Yes, I am that easy to please.

And what? The Japan mix CD doesn't include Spoon's track? Boo-urns, I say.
