(Non-Puppet Oriented) Stingray: The Series Now On DVD

I know there was a thread for this show at some point in recent memory, not sure where it went but "Stingray: The Complete Series" is now on disc.

It's a region 1 set but it's a Canadian release so I doubt it will be easy to find in stores in the states. The only website I found it on was Amazon. They were offering it for $44 which seemed a bit high. Did a little digging and went through Amazon's Canadian site where they offer it for $22 plus standard international shipping (the cheapest option) which brought it up to $32 total. So if you're looking to get it then that's probably the best way to go. The good news is that the standard shipping only led to a 4 day wait until the package arrived.

Um, is it the end of time? They are finally releasing it? Great, guess I know one thing I am getting and my wife is now getting one less birthday present. Molti, you are my hero today.

It's a pretty no-frills release but I don't know what more I could have asked for from a short-lived series that's 20 years old. It's every episode, so that's fine with me.

Watched the pilot last night and enjoyed it greatly, though the clearer picture really shows off Mancuso's fight double in certain spots. Ed O'Ross showed up as a terrifically stereotypical 80's TV mob thug. He was a blast.

It was such a refreshing sort of TV hero for that era. The way Mancuso downplays his "too cool" image is hilarious.

"So, uh, do people call you Stingray?"

"I hope not."

Hey Molti, I found it through US Amazon as well. Was looking for something else and said what the hell; and there is was.

I remember watching this show. How many episodes were there?

Wasn't his whole gimmick righting wrongs for karma, or something?

Yeah, that's where I saw it first but $44 was a bit more than I was looking to pay. Going through Amazon Canada made it $12 cheaper. If you have an account with US Amazon you should be able to get stuff through their Canadian site (if you want to) without starting a new account.

There were 23 total, though the disc splits the 90 minute pilot into 2 parts so it lists 24.

His gimmick was more that he helped you for a favor and never money. It was sort of like PAY IT FORWARD only he would also get in car chases and beat people up.

Ah. I wonder who was underwriting him. Certainly the upkeep on that Stingray cost some dough. I guess I'll have to buy it and find out.

Like Homer Simpson, I always wanted to travel around the country in an RV and solve mysteries. A Stingray would have been even better, though.

CIA actually owns it's own insurance company. I would be willing to bet he was covered by them somewhere down the line. Of course I believe the car was at one time registered to the Presidential Motor Pool.

I forgot that he had the whole "Served in Nam, would sometimes flashback to being held captive in a tiger cage" thing going on.

Favorite reference to his past for m is this line: "Know him? I created him." The one ep I would want a commentary track for.

I seem to remember this show had a great opening theme music and odd title montage: A slo-mo shot of a helicopter crashing into a bridge, sexy woman putting her finger to her puckered lips, and random shots of chess pieces. Am I right?

Yep, here it is:

Among my favorite bits from that sequence are his slow-mo martial arts hand movements. This may be a bold statement but I feel that theme is Mike Post's finest work. Usually if I watch a show on disc I zap through the opening credit sequence. Can't do it with this show.

Thanks for the link. It's even better than I remember it. Damn, I suddenly find myself feeling all nostalgic for '80s Stephen J. Cannell TV programing.

Maybe this will help with that:

I had heard this was coming out April 1, but I thought maybe that was an April Fools joke.

I'll pick it up when I see it in the stores. They usually get one copy of these VEI releases at the local Best Buy here. I've already picked up and watched all of their HARDCASTLE AND MCCORMICK releases and the first season of RIPTIDE. I probably won't continue with the RIPTIDE releases, but anybody who likes this 80's action/adventure stuff has to check out HARDCASTLE. It actually holds up fairly well, in my opinion.

Oh man, ol' Stingray really had his hands full in the most recent episode I watched. He had to square off against Kurtwood Smith and Tom Atkins!

Damn you Molti. Now I have the theme stuck in my head. and will be humming that all day. Always fun when people ask me what that is from. Really, I would love to bring this back as a show. The continuing legacy of Ray.

I had the theme stuck in my head for like a good week and a half. Finally subsided over the weekend. So damn catchy.

Found this in my local Best Buy yesterday. I watched the pilot last night and it was really fun. I especially loved the cover of Easy Lover in the bar scene where we first meet Ray.

Ditto on this being one of Post's best themes.

I'm still making my through the series and overall it has been a treat, mainly thanks to Mancuso. There are a few clunkers mixed in though. There's one where he has to go undercover in a bio-dome to solve a murder that made zero sense to me.

It really is the only series from my youth I would want to see updated. I enjoyed seeing the updated Miami Vice, but I didn't need it. But I would love to see the updated Stingray. On cable. continuing from the original series.

We might need help Molti.

I'd just like to see Mancuso get a juicy role on some cable show like "Dexter" or maybe "Brotherhood." He's just so good on "Stingray" and keeps things watchable even when the plotlines get a little funky. I know he still works a lot doing low budget movies which is cool, but he deserves more.
