Cashback (2006)

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by how charming I found this film. The way the dream-like time stoppage/flashback segments were broken up and informed by the humor/melancholy of the "real-life" segments was pretty well done. Just when one aspect or another threatened to become a little long in the tooth it would shift and offset what had come before.

I had a discussion with a co-worker today about the value of "all the naked women" in the film. He claimed that it was totally unnecessary and more of a gimmick to get people to watch it, something to push a quirky romcom into indie/daring territory. I argued that it was more likely to push people away from seeing it (OMG! Naked! NO!), as I thought of several of my friends who might have enjoyed the movie with those scenes either edited down or removed (although, the flashback with the Swedish exchange student would have to stay because it informs so much of what Ben is today).

Honestly, though, I guess I'm a little more on the fence about the purpose of said nudity. It does lend a lot to the daydream quality and illuminates the boundaries of Ben's interior and exterior worlds. But, I can understand the "gimmicky" argument, especially since I'd only read a few reviews and had watched the "exclusive clip" in the supermarket, it seemed to me that maybe they were leaning on that to help get the word around on the film.

Anyway, the story was sweet and the ending was gorgeous and I just fell into the trap of pretty much only talking about the role of nudity in the film, but I suppose that's probably the meatiest thing to discuss...

I'll admit it. I rented this off Netflix for the nudity. But as you mentioned, this movie surprisingly was pretty charming. I ended up not really caring that much about the nudity, which was done in a pretty artful way (and kind of seemed generic for the most part), and really got into the story.

The Target by where I live has this on sale for $9.99, and I've really wanted to buy it, but each time I pick it up I feel like I'm an old dirty man because of the cover.

On another note, this movie really reminded me of "8 Days a Week" and "100 Girls." I'm not sure if anyone else has seen those movies around here, but I picked up on a lot of similarities.

Just watched this on Netflix Watch Instantly and was completely charmed by it. It's nice to see a romance where the film still manages to make you doubt whether or not the guy gets the girl.

The nudity works for me beyond simple oogling of naked flesh. It shows where Ben's mind is at at that point in the film, where it's the external appearance of beauty that moves him. It's only when he starts drawing Sharon, fully clothed and capturing what he sees in her rather than her exterior, that he finds his happiness. He's moved from the superficial to the real, and by gradually eschewing the nudity, the film lets the audience make that journey as well.

Really enjoyed this movie. Wouldn't mind picking it up on Blu-Ray if they ever bother to release it which seems kind of doubtful at this point.

Moving this to the top of my Netflix Instant Watch queue. Disappointing that so few responded to summer smiles' thread.

The funny parts of this were really funny.  Everything with the supermarket crew I loved.  The rest was standard boy-pursues-girl-of-his-dreams fare but that's true of like 75% of movies these days.  At least this one had a clever twist, some real laughs and the love interest was somewhat reality-based.

anybody seen the director Sean Ellis's follow up THE BROKEN with beautiful Lena Headey?
