Ikaruga

Thread Starter
I've seen a lot of XBLA bashing around the net, but I don't understand the hate. Yeah, there are a bunch of craptactular games out there, but there are some freakin' killer games...

I think Ikaruga is one of them.

But that game is fucking tough! There's an achievment for passing level one with an A rating. I passed the level on medium without dying, and the game gave me a C+.

I'm not sure I can do that again, let alone figure out how to get an A rating. I suppose it wants me to beat it on hard.

FUCK.

Is this the hardest game known to man?

Answer: No.

That said, Ikaruga's up there.

I have no clue how you're supposed to get an A rating either, but I figure, I have a better chance of trying to actually beat the damn game first before worrying about grades or scoring.

The game is just excellent, though, and I'm going to be very disappointed in all of you if this thread doesn't at least reach 30 posts.

I saw a used GC copy of this at Hastings for something like $60. I'm not a big shoot 'em up fan so I passed. I look forward to trying this out over the weekend.

This game fucking rules. I have it for the GC but will prolly ebay it for the cash now that I can play it on the box. I'm pretty sure ratings are based on time and score. So don't miss any kills and don't take your sweet time beating the boss.

I think people slam XBLA because it's the people who are clamoring for more arcade ports and less new, original titles. I have no shame in admitting that I'm one of those people who want a lot more arcade ports, but at the same time I don't call XBLA crap. I'm really glad they are using it as a source to create original games, from both the developer and player standpoint, even if they aren't really for my own benefit. I don't understand the hate.

I was actually waiting for a thread to pop up about this game. I wanted to see some opinions before I picked it up. I'm a huge fan of shooters so I'm pretty interested. I'm assuming it has a demo, right? Maybe I'll give it a spin before I commit. I'm curious about how the whole polarity thing works. Just reading about it makes it seem kind of high concept.
The polarity system itself? Not really. The level design, however, is the work of a madman/genius.

To answer your question, though, yeah, there's a trial version. And don't worry. It's one of those "Minutes to learn, years to master" deals.

Yeah I've got this one the GameCube. Amazing game.

I finally got to the point where I could beat it back when I bought it, but I picked it up a few months ago and it was almost like I hadn't played it before. Damn memorization.

Gun damn. How is that even considered fun?

I remember Ikaruga being fun when I played it on my friend's Gamecube. I think I'm going to have to pick this up.

to get a good score you need to chain the shots so that the multiplier starts adding up and upping your points.
Yeah, I just figured out it's tied to the chain system. I got a B+ on the first stage getting around 600,000 points.

But, again, I'll worry about that in earnest once I've actually beaten the thing. And as it stands, the third boss is doing a great job of not letting that happen.

I must say I'm really getting into this game. I made it to the 5th stage for the first time. Developing strategies for co-op is really fun.
