How Many Friends Do You Have Outside Your Own Race?

Thread Starter
It's 2008. How many friends do you have outside your own race?
Does the person with the most win a prize?
No, we're holding auditions for the CHUD version of "Rent".

Serious answer: friends: very few. Acquaintances and/or work pals: 3 or 4.

I have five other-colored friends, isn't that just neat? Everybody gather round and clap at what a humanitarian motherfucker I am. Some are even black or arab, so I try to be extra nice to them.
A good dozen or so. I made a few Egyptian and Asian friends while over seas, some of my best friends are black, and while not of another race, I'm also really close with this Swedish couple I'm living with right now.

I have many. Magic: The Gathering is a universal language.

I dated a Korean girl once.

Once.

Okay, several times.

She could put her legs behind her head, how could I say no?

Although, the more I think about it, the label asian gymnast seems more and more racist. I'm sorry, Patrick.

Do Jews count?
I am an Asian magnet, though for some reason my grandfather acts like they're the italian's mortal enemies. 8! 8 Asians!
Whenever we're organized in alphabetical order at school, I'm always put next to a bunch of Korean dudes.
I'm surrounded by honkies.
None.

So I guess I'm a racist and shit.
Bah, I've got a whole crew of diverse folks. I've got my black friend, my Indian friend, my Russian friend, my gay friend, my Jewish friend and Doug.
How are Latinos broken up? Is a dark-skinned Puerto Rican "black" and a light-skinned Puerto Rican "white" and an in-between Puerto Rican "latino"?

Big deal. I can do that. The important thing is, did she put her legs behind your head?
I hate humanity in general, so I don't even have friends within my own race, much less the human race. Howd'ya like that shit?

Since I'm middle eastern, and don't know any other middle eastern people, I guess all my friends are outside my race.

What did I win?
With the exception of my current job, I've always worked with, and hung out with after, a pretty broad spectrum of friends from diverse backgrounds and races. Still hang out with them every month or so, depending when our schedules line up.

At my present job, however, I work with only 4 other people, 2 of whom are on site. One Christian, one Jewish, and I don't know what the crew in New Mexico is. All Caucasian.

My best friend is Jewish, and I'm Catholic (sorta lapsed). My wife is Methodist.

There! I've told you all I know!!! Now, let me GO!!!!! And stop trying to good cop/bad cop me!
About eight or so, off the top of my head. A mixture of black, latina and asian. Am I a good person now?

My roommate dates a Chinese girl.

That's all I got.
I don't have any friends.
I'd like to buy the world a coke.
Almost all of my friends are outside my race. Perks from being on a diverse college campus, I suppose. I'll hang with anyone as long as they're good people. It's fun having friends outside your race. I was a bridesmaid in my good friend's Indian wedding, and it was the most kickass ceremony I've ever seen. It looked like the end of Moulin Rouge. If I restricted myself to my own race, I never would have seen it.

I know a Canadian dude.

We'll take the chinks and the niggers, but NOT the Irish!

Good question - I'm half Colombian, half European, so either my wife and daughter aren't of my race, or they are.

And if I'm "Hispanic", then almost ALL my friends are outside my race; if I'm "white", then MOST of my friends are inside my race. Stood in the wedding of a half-Jew, have a black cousin, my wife was married to a half-Korean man, invited one fully Mexican woman, one half-black/half-white guy, one half-white/half-Japanese guy, and one half-black/half-Japanese guy to my wedding. At one of my jobs there are a boatload of Asians - one Chinaman and a bunch of Hmongs, a handful of black people, and one Indian woman - and I like 'em all and consider a few of them "friends." And I'd certainly fuck a hot woman of ANY race.

I dunno, just put me down for "zero"; question is too complicated.

For what it's worth, the one where you get through life without ever feeling so racially stilted or threatened that you have to count your non-ethnocentric friends up as separate or different from the others is worth 50.

I think the question of what constitutes "race" has to come up here. I said before that I'm middle eastern, but the truth is that I'm half Assyrian and half Dutch. Where does that put me? A recent poll of American teens showed that a majority of them didn't feel that race was a factor in friendship or dating, and that they didn't understand why mixed marriage would even be an issue. On the other hand, I still run into this idea from the black people I know that if there's any black in you at all, you're black. And there was at least one of them that I wouldn't have known if she hadn't told me. Her skin was literally lighter than mine.

So just how finely are we splitting the hairs here?

What was the Nazi standard - one Jewish grandparent meant you were Jewish?
I come from the school of thought that says, scientifically, we're all black. Some of our ancestors just liked caves and mountains more than others.
I'm a marathoner, but I'm married to a traithlete. The guy who sang at my wedding set a record in 440 relay. He was also a hell of a sprinter.

Only if you're white.

Canadians count? Cuz I got a whole boatload of them.
Only two or three, I think, unless you count people I only know online. I've never really thought about it much.
My family qualifies as interracial! Go me!
Couldn't tell. Those white hoods & large tunics just don't let you see each other's skin, y'know?

My liquor cabinet is not racist.

Russian? Check
Canadian? Check
Irish? Check
Mexican? Check
Japanese? Check
Korean? Check
German? Check

I'll let other races into my life if they taste good.

Chavez, you are my Latino friend! I need to get a picture with you a la Stephen Colbert and his friends of many ethnicities. Of course, you're also one of my filthy surrender monkey friends, but that's not as cool... And, yeah, the Final Solution rule was one Jewish grandparent = Jewish. But do we really want to let murderous fascists dictate our interpretation of ethnicity?

On a related note, according to some, I'm in an interracial marriage (or half-interracial, anyway), though I really don't think about it. We're both white, racists don't leer at us on the street. What amuses me, though, is how others react to it. Most people don't think much of Dave's Jewishness, but there are some people who either get excited or seem really uncomfortable. Upon learning that Dave is Jewish, a guest at one of our New Year's parties said something about always wanting to have a Jewish friend (?!). I've had friends pull me aside and ask, in a whisper, if Dave is "really" Jewish. I've also had a friend make vile, vile comments about Israel in his presence and get weirdly obsessed with whether or not I intend to convert.
