Some Kind of Monster (2004)

Titles a tad misleading, but this is a documentary made about the recording of Metallica's most recent album, St. Anger. I'm a casual fan of Metallica, so I was indifferent as to what to expect. I did, however, enjoy it very much. It's unbiased and has a lot to say about the recording process and what it can do to a group of guys with big talents and even bigger egos. Recommended.

Its a great film, capturing the band faling apart and coming back together again. The only sad thing is that after all that work, all they got out of it was the Napster controversy and St. Anger.

Awesome film though.

It was interesting to say the least, but the worst part of that was Kirk Hammett's lyrics on some of the songs. "My lifestyle determines my deathstyle"? Christ.

I've never thought of Metallica to be any deeper than a puddle of bum piss (though they can rock out pretty hard), but that was just godawful. I came away from that documentary hating them even more.

The film is mostly about a buch of spoiled rich boys that took everything to excess, then crashed and burned. Jason got sick of being treated like shit, and left. James and Lars little world came crashing down. The one part I was really interested in, James rehab, was basically left out of the film. James has a really dark past that I would have liked to see him come to terms with.

Like Jake, this movie made me really hate Lars and James for their egos, and Kirk for being a pussy and going along with it all. The sad part is, Newsted hasn't really found any real footing since leaving the band.

What's sad is that line made it into the final song. Metal bands aren't supposed to be deep, but some of their older songs have some decent stuff in them.

Lars Ulrich is such a quivering pussy. I don't like my rock gods to have so many feelings.

Fascinating doc, nonetheless.

Kirk Hammet looks like Captain Hook, but talks like Peter Pan.

God I know, and that wasn't even as bad as Dave Mustaine or however you spell it. That guy....God what a bitch.

Mustaine later said the movie was edited to make him look bad. I kinda believe it. Dave has always lived in Metallica's shadow, but I've always seen Metallica and Megadeth neck and neck. Both have some great stuff. They're just styles.

If Dave and James ever cut heads, Hetfield would be left in the dust.

Actually, he found a home with the reformulated Voivod, but their guitarist died, so that is done after 2 albums.

It's a solid documentary. I have such a disdain for "St. Anger" that it almost ruins the movie for me every time they start playing one of those songs. Still, it's very interesting to see such a popular band get all pissy with each other.

Some of my favorite scenes have Lars' dad in them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this also.

Never worked out why they decided to include the footage of Lars selling some of his art collection and sipping champagne as it goes under the hammer. Unless you know, they really wanted people to dislike the guy, moreso.

Yea lars and james do not come across all that well, but it certainly is fun watching them go at it. Mustaine, to me, just seems like a bit of a child. He was an angry drunk and got kicked out of the band, and since then has always lived in metallicas' shadow. But it was twenty fucking years ago and he has a popular band of his own, give it a rest.

Jason also got a raw deal, always seemed like a nice guy.

I think the interesting thing about this documentary in particular is that it looks like something a group of people would make about a band, etc. to purposely make them look bad. But we see first hand that it's Metallica's decision to make this. I'm not sure what to make of that.

Well I think thats partly because originally, the documentary was just going to show the band working on their upcoming album. Obviously things did not go as planned, and they ended up with a much different film.
