Eternal Sonata: Or How I Learned To Accept My Inner Gay Man

About halfway through my first playthrough and I'm actually finding the game all kinds of charming. Sure the graphics mean that it is a game I refuse to let anyone see me play, for fear of my social status and the well being of their eyes, but in terms of being a diverting and colourful game on the generally monochrome 360 it is kind of a blast.

I really looked forward to this, and the demo was a lot of fun. When it was released it got kind of middling reviews, and there was so much out at the time it got missed. Definitely waiting for price to drop so I can snag it.

How's the story? In terms of 360 RPGs, Lost Odyssey's miles ahead in that race, but the idea of Chopin's death bed fever dream always had me intrigued.

It is absolutely fucking nutty, like probably one of the more batshit insane JRPGs I've played. The entire world is, like has been said, a construct of Chopin's subconcious as he slips towards death and as such it is this sort of Baroque, Baron Munchauseny, sort of world where every character is named after a musical term.

It sort of takes events from Chopin's life (the rebellion in his native Poland, the death of his young sister) and intergrates them into this world. So the story is essentially about a rebellion against a tyranical count who is trying to poison his populace to mutate them into an ever expanding army.

It's full of odd little touches like the game suddenly breaking off and playing a piece of Chopin's music with real world footage of the places he lived and text explaining how the song came about. Currently I'm heading towards a kingdom of snow and I'm in the process of taking on a pirate captain on her ship.

I got past this when I first popped in Kingdom Hearts.

SOLD.

It's so gonna have to take a number and get in line until I beat GTA IV and Lost Odyssey, though.

You are all towering, flaming homosexuals.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to pretending that I'm an alcoholic, serial-killer-chasing rogue cop, battling evil on the brink between reality and the supernatural. A very manly cop, dammit.

At least the impotence won't be hard to fake. BURN!

Eternal Sonata is a pretty interesting game. Like Spike said the story is kind of wacky but the Chopn history lessons mixed in are a nice touch. The graphics may be overly colorful for some but the game it technically very sound and it's a nice change of pace from the majority of 360 stuff out there. It's nice to see the 360 getting some Japanese style RPGs and while Lost Odyssey is definitely the best of the bunch so far Eternal Sonata is definitely worth a look. I've had it since it was released, but as is typical for me I trailed off and never finished it. I started Lost Odyssey and I'm determined to actually finish it (25+ hours in and counting so far) but I'm definitely going to get back to Eternal Sonata after that. Eventually I'll even get back to Blue Dragon.

edit: Eternal Sonata also isn't supposed to be as long as some of the other epic RPGs out there (might be a bonus for some). I forget how long it's actually supposed to take to get through it but I wouldn't be suprised if it clocks in at under 30 hours. How long have you been playing so far Spike?

I've got about 12 hours logged and I'm about halfway through. If I want to get all the Achievements I'll have to put in an extra 10 hours to play through it again on HARD mode.

I really dig the combat system in this game, what with the using light/shadows to trigger different abilities. And the chick with the bow and arrow kicks all kinds of ass.

I'll pick this up once day when it's ghetto-cheap and finish it, didn't have enough free time when I rented it and all this talk of snow kingdoms and pirate ships has me re-intrigued

I dunno Singer, that seems a little too manly if ya ask me.
