Scientists Get Paid For This?

"New calculations reveal there is a 99.7 percent chance a magnitude 6.7 quake or larger will strike in the next 30 years. The odds of such an event are higher in Southern California than Northern California, 97 percent versus 93 percent."

Here's another prediction for California: In the next 30 years there will be at least one day where the temperature is above 100 degrees. Watch out for it.

I understand these are the same scientists that determined that trees are made of wood, fire is in fact hot, water is actually wet, and cancer is bad.

What's their take on lost luggage?

You know, I sometimes think they're just making shit up to sound smart.

Probably was this guy:

Well Randy is a geologist and he does work for the USGS so it is possible. It sure as hell would've been more funny sounding.

So I guess there's at least a 93% chance we'll hear the Governator shouting for Maria to "Get to da Chopper!" when The Big One hits.

They'll show you. They'll show you all.

This skirts dangerously close to the whole 'scientists made up global warming to keep their jobs' argument. I'm sure they're trying to whittle that number down to something less abstract so as to actually help people prepare.

Then perhaps it wasn't the best time to make an announcement at 30 years. Cut it down to 3 and I'll definitely take it into consideration.

I'm sure they're required to report their findings every once and a while. Maybe this is there way of saying the technology isn't capable of any better. Maybe they need more money.

So with all these earthquakes, any chance of California breaking off or something? I have this friend who's into real estate, and he's very curious about the report.

Hmm, this would explain why this guy became mayor up north:

Ah. i got it. They were sitting around playing Rock Band for months, when the supervisor said they needed to file their report. One of 'em was like "fuck! ok ok um let's just tell them there will probably be an earthquake in like um in like 30 years. None of us will be working here still in 30 years. It's perfect!"

Look. Rock Band isn't an easy game, and I for one would be happy to support more rhythmically adept geologists with my tax payer dollars.

But they really shouldn't have tried to claim the game as "high tech earthquake sensing thingy" on their expense report.

Considering the lack of information in said source I don't understand why scientists are getting mocked in this thread.

You all sound like a bunch of creationists.

Ed, this one's for you.

Stare at this. Then read this.

Science, I believe, we can all get behind.

"You've never been out of college! You don't know what it's like out there! I've worked in the private sector. They expect results."
