2008 NCAA Football Season - Page 14

So, now that another season is gone, I have a topic for discussion (if anyone's interested). I was having this conversation with a friend last week. The people that run the BCS are fond of saying, "All the BCS is there for is to match up #1 and #2 at the end of the season. Nothing else." But it was used to determine who went to the Big 12 championship game that had an impact on the final teams that met for the MNC, and who knows what other tiebreakers depend on BCS ranking. My suggestion/point was, if that's truly what you want the BCS for, to determine #1 and #2, then why post BCS rankings at all until the end of the "regular" season? Why not keep the BCS rankings unpublished, and then show them at the end to determine #1 & #2.

I mean, the obvious answer is, you have an AP and a Coaches Poll, so why not show the BCS poll? I would say, you have those two polls to help determine the placement in the BCS, so you don't need to see the BCS poll at all, until the end.

Anyway, just a topic to fill some of the emptiness of the end of the college football season. I really don't have a dog in the fight either way, I just thought keeping the BCS private until the end would be an interesting thing to do.

Is anyone going to watch...The Senior Bowl, It is my favorite of the 2 college football all star games? It airs Saturday 6pm on the NFL Network.

Really, it's just because it keeps the BCS as a topic of conversation throughout the year. Using those standings to determine who plays in the championship game isn't a requirement of the BCS, I don't believe. I'm pretty sure that's a decision that the conference made on their own.

I don't know what the point of not publishing the standings would be.

Aside from publicity, what's the point of publishing them? It affects voting in the other polls, one could say releasing the BCS standing beforehand leads to a reactivity in the polls they would not have otherwise.

The BCS itself is completely and utterly reactive to the other polls, so where do you stop? It's a circular arguement. If we're going this route, what's the point of publishing ANY poll before the end of the year?

The WHY is actually pretty simple - everyone wants to see it. Everyone wants to talk about it. The sport is healthier with more conversation and this only builds more talk. All possible data points to the BCS being the best thing to happen to college football since state school cheerleaders.

Except for the ratings drop (except for the national title game). [half kidding]

But you are dead-on about the polls. It's marketing, for papers, for networks and for the teams.

Overall ratings (the entire season) and the dollars involved are up exponentially. Everyone always asks why there's so many bowls and that there isn't any interest, but the reason there's so many bowls is because they make shitloads of money. If interest is lower, how is it there are new bowls every year? Some individual bowls may have lower ratings, but that has a lot to do with the fact that bowls are more spread out. You have more than 5 nationally televised bowl options now.
