Help me love Puzzle Quest

There used to be a Puzzle Quest thread, but it was either devoured by the Great Thread Purge of 2008, or cannot be found by the Worst Search Feature Evertm.

I finally got around to booting up Puzzle Quest a few weeks ago. I'm trying to love it, I really am. I do enjoy bejeweled styled games (I still play the original Gameboy Tetris on a daily basis), and while I haven't played a non-first person RPG in a while, I like RPGs and used to play them almost exclusively. I'm just not digging the combination. Getting dragged into a bejeweled battle can get frustratingly slow, I don't like that my management of battles is basically dictated by jewel set-up, and for an RPG, there seems to be zero exploration, character building, etc. You walk along preset paths and get nothing but preset encounters. Were my expectations unreasonable?

Should I stick with it? The merging of the styles just isn't working for me, which is a shame, as I really want to love this game.

**Also, I can't stand the cutesy anime characters.

I'd like to help...but unfortunately, this is one love train we're both gonna have to just let pull out of the station, for all the reasons you just mentioned.

Puzzle Quest is a lot like Jesus. You can't be told about how great It is, you have to simply know Its love. Open your heart and let Puzzle Quest in, Overlord.

I guess I hate Jesus. Overlord, you should join me in the Cult of Poker Smash instead. It's tops.

And we have punch and pie.

I'd help you, but this is kind of a special, almost magical thing that happens between a man and a video game, and I always said if I was going to be in a threesome it wouldn't be with two dudes.

I was huge on this game when it came out for DS, but the 'linear paths and preset encounters' as you mentioned have forced me to all but give up on this title. Every time I complete a quest I think 'okay, I just need to get back to the castle and turn this in so I can advance into the next region of the map!'. So I move one spot and see 4 monsters pop up along the path to my goal, realize there goes the next hour or two of my day, and slowly close the DS case, eject the game and stick it back in the drawer for another few months.

Have you tried Puzzle Fighter Krishna?

I am glad to see my apostasy shall not be a lonely exile. Trejo, Gravedigger, and Justin, thank you for helping me see that I am not alone.

I gave this another shot at lunch today. Forget it. When I want a puzzle game, I'd just boot up a puzzle game. If I want an RPG, I don't want to be bogged down by the "luck of the draw" shenanigans of puzzle games.

Bah. My heart lies heavy in my chest.

I loved this game enough to play it through until the ending. It is, however, a "love it, or wonder why the hell people play it kind of game". I understood this when I was describing to a friend, and he said "So, you bought a game that you can pretty much play for free online..."
"Yeah...but it's got rpg elements too."
"A lot?"
"...no."

You know what, if they just got rid of all the RPG trappings and just had a series of random (or selectable encounters), I'd probably like it more.

Actually, I might as well just play bejeweled.

If they had Bejeweled for the DS, I might have done the same thing. As it is, my laptop does not travel into the restroom with me as easily.
