2008 NFL Season Thread

The schedule came out today, and with the draft a week and a half away, seems like a good time to get this rolling.

The Bucs seem to have caught a break -- no real cold weather games outside of October 5th at Denver and November 2nd at Kansas City. And we get Green Bay at home and go to Chicago in the third week. The bye is a little late (Week 10), but the first six games look winnable. Then it's Seattle at home (on Sunday night) and Dallas on the road, but after that, San Diego looks like the toughest team, and that's a home game too. Should be fun.

Here are the Sunday night games. Keep in mind the flex scheduling starts in Week 11:

Wk 1: Chicago at Indy
Wk 2: Pittsburgh at Cleveland
Wk 3: Dallas at Green Bay
Wk 4: Phildelphia at Chicago
Wk 5: Pittsburgh at Jacksonville
Wk 6: New England at San Diego
Wk 7: Seattle at Tampa Bay
Wk 8: Indy at Tennessee
Wk 9: New England at Indy
Wk 10: NY Giants at Philadelphia
Wk 11: Dallas at Washington
Wk 12: Indy at San Diego
Wk 13: Chicago at Minnesota
Wk 14: New England at Seattle
Wk 15: NY Giants at Dallas
Wk 16: San Diego at Tampa Bay

Barring disastrous seasons, I think the Chicago/Minnesota game is the only one with a chance of getting moved. That's a hell of a slate.

As always, KSK has the best take on this. (Major bonus points for Steve Martin's finest moment being referenced.)

Speaking as a Bills fan, that Monday night Browns game should be a blast. People are already bitching about the Miami game being the one moved to Toronto. I'm not sure if I really care, since neither team's been anywhere close to what they were when the rivalry was at its peak. But it's just one more ominous sign about the team's future...

I see eight winnable games, which probably is stretching it. Then again, it's April.
Chicago has too many Sunday night games. Whose their quarterback going to be and does it even matter? Are they going to smarten up and get a differant running back? Indy should kill them in week 1.

Dallas v Green Bay is a nostalgia game. With Brett Favre gone, I don't see them coming anywhere near the success they had last year. This was a great game last year. Not so much this season, I wouldn't think. The other two Cowboy games are big rivalry games, but will Washington fall from stature this year too? I think they might.

Pittsburgh is involved in two of the more promising games, though, both rivalries and both should be fantastic games. And San Diego has their two toughest games on Sunday night. That should be some good action. The game against Tampa Bay not so much.

Week 9 - awesome. Indy and New England always puts on a great show.

The Cowboys play one Monday night game?
The fuck?
Just in time for Falcons to announce their starting QB--Chris Redman! Yeah! Take that, 4-12 2007 season!

I still have no idea who they'll draft at #3, and I don't think they do either. Supposedly there's a rumor that Miami may "pass" on Pick 1 and not pick until they're ready. In other words, they let time expire (like Minnesota did a few years back) and wait out the next few teams to see who falls.

Ugh. Can Pittsburgh not play Jax one season? I swear, they're the bane of the Steelers' existence.

Remember, Sunday night is the big deal now, and Dallas is on there three times.

So, LB Stephen Cooper has been suspended 4 games for steroid use. That makes 3 players on the San Diego defense who have been nailed for steroid use in the last 3 years--Cooper, Shawn Merriman, and Luis Castillo--plus 1 player on offense.

Yeah, you can finish last one year in the AFC North and we can finish first in the AFC South. Then it's guaranteed not to happen.

... keep hoping.

I can't remember the last time the Seahawks played on Thanksgiving. Good stuff!

The Dolphins sign Jake Long to a mult-year contract, ensuring that he will be the #1 pick in the draft.

No details on numbers yet.

EDIT: Five years, $57.75 million with $30 million in guaranteed money, so the bar is now set for the rest of the picks.
Richard Dickson, Now that Miami has drafted a Big Fish at left tackle...they need a good QB for their new LT Jake Long to protect.

They're apparently high on John Beck, so shoring up the line for him was a priority. They need some youth on defense, so I see them going that way more than QB (although I wouldn't rule out them taking one in the later rounds).

The Fins need a whole lot of everything.

2 #1 picks for Chad Johnson
And Cincy says no?! WTF, why? I know they lost Chris Henry but Palmer shhould be good enough to make anyone better. Bad move if true.

It was one no.1 and a conditional 3rd rounder that potentially could be a no.1, but even still I'm mildly surprised Cincy didn't bite. They either think they can get more, or really are considering prescribing to the "fuck 'em, let him sit out" thought process (which is fucking retarded, but I would love to see it happen).

Though part of me drools at the prospect of having him in Dallas, that's a recipe for disaster. Well-behaved T.O. would be a thing of the past.
You know TO was spotted in a new Bang Bros. video, right? I'm sure Roger Goodell will love that.

And supposedly, "Fuck him" is what Marvin Lewis has said about Ocho Cinco...that he hopes he stays true to his word and sits out the entire season.

Seahawks are going to release Shaun Alexander. Lots of teams could use him, so I'm sure he won't be out there long.

My thoughts exactly. I don't see why you take a LT if you have No Offense. If Beck is indeed the future then fine, but i think they should have gone for Chris Long he looks to be a great Defensive player for years to come. Furthermore, Parcells is defense comes first type of guy which makes this all the more puzzling.

I'd take that in a heartbeat. You'd have 9 and 21. You could trade the 9 down and pick up another 2 picks besides a lower first. Or be bold and trade the 2 #1's and the conditional pick for a top 4 selection.

CJ in Dallas would be a mistake. Too much ego's involved and it would take away from Whitten.

Did Ronnie Brown die or something?
Richard Dickson, No Ronnie Brown did not die. I am glad that Miami took Jake Long. While they do need help everywhere, I would like to see them draft more offensive players than defensive ones. Miami spent alot of time and effort to build a good but not overly great defense in the 90's. I think they have now Taken 6 offensive players in the last 16 drafts which includes 3 busts rb John Avery, OT Billy Milner, and WR Yatil Green. I saw a stat the other day that there are no players drafted between 1998-2003 that are still on the roster. Jimmy Johnson couldn't draft a wr to save his job. His best wideout O.J. McDuffie was drafted by Don Shula and his 2nd was a free agent from the arena league. JJ did draft a wr in Yatil Green who was a complete bust. JJ also drafted underachieving ot Billy Milner and he traded down to take RB John Avery over eventual hall of fame wr Randy Moss. Dave Wannstadt did trade for Ricky Williams, and he did draft steady yet unspectacular Chris Chambers. Nick Saban drafted Ronnie Brown and Vernon Carey, while Cam Cameron drafted Ted Ginn over Brady Quinn. With the rest of the draft, I would like to see a QB preferable Joe Flacco or Chad Henne or maybe a late rd pick on San Diego States Kevin O'Connell, an OG, TE, DE, CB, WR, LB, and maybe a small school RB.

Apparently, Lito Shepherd visited Tampa and word is the Bucs and Eagles may be talking trade. The Eagles are asking for a second round pick this year plus either a player or another pick, but the Bucs want to go lower than that. They do this though, it's almost a certainty that the Bucs take a WR at #20.
Suffice to say Alexander won't be getting any of that batshit crazy dough Houston gave Ahman Green last year. He would be a solid spell back. He could join a partially crowded backfield and be fantastic like Jacobs, Bradshaw, Droughs, and Ward in New York. I don't know where that backfield is, but if he signs somewhere to be a feature back.... uh oh. He won't get past Week 3.

Culpepper was in Green Bay on Thurs. He could greatly benefit from time spent with Mike McCarthy and Tom Clements (QBs). And if he came at a reasonable price I'd be pleased with him as a backup as long as he isn't giving away ice and then taking it back. Idiot.

And here's a prediction... if Ted Thompson can get another 2nd round pick plus change for that #30 overall, Green Bay will trade itself out of the 1st round entirely. Hell, even a couple 3rds might be enough.
Why is the draft stating so late this year? Starting at 2 Central time is a bit late when the first round takes forever.

I would love for the Bears to trade up big time for McFadden, Ryan, or a Offensive Lineman. I know it would take alot but those 2 are worth it. I have to believe The could trade up to NE if Ryan is still there.

NFL draft pick value chart
To trade with NE it would tak their first and 2 3rd's.

Kansas City has the chance to be really good after this draft.
They pushed the start time back because they shortened the time between picks. And the later time allows for a wider audience.

Aren't they only doing two rounds today too?
Yep.
And Chris Long goes number 2.

Hopefully we can get the first 5 picks over and done with before the draft starts.
Holy hell, the Jaguars shot up to get Derrick Harvey. And it really only cost them a couple of picks - they dealt one pick they got when they fleeced Buffalo for Stroud, and they still have three fifth-rounders to move back into the third or fourth if they want.

All offseason we've heard they're just a dominant pass rusher away from being a legit SB contender. They may have put all their eggs in the Harvey basket, but at least they're taking the shot, and you gotta respect that.

Also, any pick that pisses off Mel Kiper Jr. is a winner for me.
Sounds like the Jags reached for that pick though. Seems like they could have waited.

Glad the Bears got a legit LT. Mendehall would have been nice if they had a OL but the line is a huge need.

Shockingly the Lions didn't trade a WR. They take a tackle but one that seems to be more of a project. Surprised no Mendenhall. Would love for the Bears to trade next year's #1 and a 3rd for him now. Dallas could do it. They have 2 1's.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArgh!!!!!

Miami passes up a QB again...Michigan's Chad Henne and Louisville's Brian Brom were both available.

WR's Oklahoma's Malcolm Kelly, Texas Limas Sweed, and Michigan State's Devin Thomas were available.

Yes DE is a need...but, Miami Needs a QB.
I don't think anybody could've ever predicted that Donnie Avery would be the first WR taken in the draft.

Do you know Miami has John Beck and just got McCown? The Dolphins were all kinds of horrible and if they weren't going Ryan then they should build on the lines.

That being said those QB's would look good in a Bear uniform. 4 away and maybe only Philly takes one barring a trade.

I'll buy you a six pack of what ever you want if the Jags even make it to the Superbowl in the next 3 years...

The Bucs board nearly imploded when Aqib Talib got picked, especially because they showed Devin Thomas on the phone right before the pick. The drug issues are troubling, but he seems like a perfect fit for our defense.

Hey, I'm just saying what people think about the Jags. Personally, I think they never will, '99 was the best shot ever and once that was blown, that was it. But I've always been fairly pessimistic about my teams.

Oh, and Stella Artois, please.
Steelers keep taking offense when the defense is what lost games for the most part last year. Mendenhall and Sweed are great, don't get me wrong, but they need more depth at DT/DE and help at the DB position. Polamalu hasn't played a whole season in almost 3 years, and the CBs are average at best.

Falcons go with Ryan at 3, and baffle with moving up to pick an OL that no one had going before the mid to late 2nd round. Then they take a LB when they need help on the DL. And now the local msg boards are lighting up saying they picked Ryan because he's a white QB and that's why he'll be favored over Vick and local favorite DJ Shockley. Ugh.

Anywatchin Angel, I am so glad I was wrong about QB Chad Henne being drafted before Miami's 2nd Rd Pick. It doesn't matter now...the loser of the John Beck Josh McCown competition will likely be out of Miami in 2009 as Chad Henne will be expected to claim Miami's Starting QB by then. Remember the now fired GM Randy Mueller and Head Coach Cam Cameron liked John Beck. Bill Parcells Director Of Football Operations for Miami has spoken...John Beck is not his type of QB, except possible as a back up. Also, Miami now has drafted 2 Defensive Ends and 2 Offensive Linemen in addition to Chad Henne QB. They also traded for TE Anthony Fasano and Akin Ayodele LB originally drafted by Parcells in Dallas.

Miami has either 5 or 6 additional picks today.

Especially since they're in the AFC and would have to play either NE, Colts, etc. its not likely they will. Plus, they've put all their faith in Gerard and I don't know if he can take them to a SB.

Maybe they want to give up a #1 pick for Brady Quinn. The Browns don't need him and he'll just waste away. If they wasted one on Mirer it's worth looking at.

Troy N, Until the New York Jets drafted QB Erik Ainge, I thought that they were going to pass on one as well. Is it possible that Lovie Smith is simply just as bad a judge of QB's as his predocessor in Chicago Dave Wannstadt? I read in the newspaper last Sunday that Joe Flacco was accepted to the University Of Pittsburgh and he left after Wannstadt told him he couldn't beat out Tyler Palko for the starting job. If true an interesting but typical sidebar to the legacy of Dave Wannstadt.

Chavez, Miami does need everything...but just look at the New York Jets, they spent all that money on their offensive line and they still have a major QB problem. While Chad Pennington is a smart player and has considerable leadership skills, he no longer has even a decent arm. Kellen Clemens does not appear to be the answer. To me, if you take a QB in round 1and you have several other needs play him when you have an offensive line.
that would indicate that the Bears organization believed they could run the ball.
I think the Tv Benson...Robert Guillaume could be a more productive runner than Cedric Benson.
Our rookie draft just started...so far:

1. Darren McFadden
2. Jonathan Stewart
3. Rashard Mendenhall

I draft #9 (14 teams). Depending on the guys ahead me, I'll probably take Smith from Detroit, Forte from Chicago, or Johnson from Tennessee. I'd love to take Felix Jones, considering I have Marion Barber, but I suspect he'll go 4-8 somewhere. Also kicking myself for trading away Michael Turner this time last year. Ugh.

I need a WR really badly, and don't have a pick in Round 2, but the RBs are more scarce.
