Soul Calibur IV

Couldn't find a thread on this. So, wa la.

First actual in-game footage is out of Yoda and Vader in action has been released. And I don't know why, but I never even entertained the idea that we'd get Star Wars themed levels with the characters. I'm more pumped than ever!

Well, we didn't get themed levels for the last round of guest fighters (or was there a Hyrule level I missed somewhere in my copy of SC2?)

I'd be more excited about this if I had a PS3. Don't give two shits about Yoda.

Both characters will be downloadable for a fee...

I figure that's most likely the case. I'd rather have it on my 360, but Vader beats out Yoda by far. I figured that they would have timed DLC for the other character on each console. Here's to hopin'.

If that's true, cool. I haven't followed anything SC related in some months, but last I'd heard they were going to same route as with SC2.

Played it today. It's definitely Soul Calibur. Online should be interesting.

The downloadable SW characters is rumor only for now -- Namco isn't saying anything official about that yet.

I am looking forward to Soul Calibur IV. It is my 4th favorite fighting franchise after Street Fighter II, King Of Fighters, and DOA. I hope eventually Namco/Bandai makes a 3d Mobile Suit Gundam fighter since Gundam is one of Bandai's top franchises. I was hoping to see mobile suits in Soul Calibur before any Star Wars cameos. I also think it would have made more sense to include Luke or Obi Wan as Vader's opponent, since they actually dueled with him in the films.

Still. So. Fucking. Weird.
I. Want. Now.

More excited about Soul Calibur 1 on the 360 than Soul Calibur IV, actually:

Soul Calibur IV will likely be my favorite game of 2008. Ign just posted about 50 new screens and it looks fantastic.

Anyone picking this up tomorrow? I hate fighting games, but SOUL CALIBUR is the exception to the rule.
Yeah, I'll be picking this up tomorrow for the 360. Some of the new characters look really bizarre, but hopefully they'll fit in with the rest of the crew after a couple of rounds.
I'm keen to play as Vader. I'm the one guy who loved MASTERS OF TERAS KASI.

I thought I fucking knew you, man.

I'm still not entirely done with SC III yet. I should probably catch up before even thinking about this, but playing as Yoda appeals too much to my inner fanboy. We'll see.
My only problem is deciding whether to get the 360 or PS3 version.

Man, there isn't even a support group for that kind of thing, is there?
Wanna start one? I'll play Thok, you play Hoar!
I had a buddy who used to love Masters of the Teras Kasi. This dude played it constantly for like a year.

He is dead now.

Let that be a lesson.

I still think the 360 controller sucks for fighters so I'm getting the PS3 version.
What really sucks about this is all the attention the Star Wars stuff is getting - when SC has the potential to be a superb fighter all by itself. Almost like it's overshadowed by some silly exclusive content. EDIT: Like all silly exclusive content.
Are you implying that this is like adding RDJ to the Incredible Hulk? Cuz that's what I'm hearing you saying!
8.7 from IGN.

Anyone pick this up yet? I'm hearing good things!
When I get home. Can't wait.
Wait, you liked Masters of the Teras Kasi? HAND IN YOUR ATHEIST CARD NOW WE DONT WANT YOU
post #27 of 78
Alex Augustine, If you have a PS3 and XBox 360 pick up Soul Calibur for that, as Darth Vader is Sony Exclusive.

The game itself is fantastic. Finally another good fighting game other than DOA 4. With Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe not being released til November and of course Street Fighter IV for Feb 09, Soul Calibur IV is the best new fighting game for the 360. Everything about the game from the graphics, the music, and of course a deep roster of characters such as Sophitia (an unlockable character) Cassandra, Yoda, Taki, and Lizardman (also Unlockable) and Darth Vader's Apprentice make this a must buy for fighting game fans.
Picked it up this morning for my 360. I dunno, something feels a little off about it... I can't really put my finger on it but I might need to just spend more time with it is all.

It's no Masters of Teras Kasi, that's for sure.
It's slower than SC3, so that may be part of it. But then, SC3 was pretty significantly sped-up from 1 and 2. Some of the characters play noticibly different (Maxi in particular), but it all still feels pretty familiar. The armor damage is a nice touch but I can't tell yet if it has much of an impact on the actual gameplay.

That said, The Apprenctice is a turtling little bitch (though it does seem like he'll be a lot of fun to play as) and it's going to take a bit of practice to really get the feel of playing as Yoda.
Does Maxi play like a little buttonmashing, infinite combo bitch still?
A little. It's not anywhere near what he used to be, though. Enough of his moves have changed, too, to where he feels almost completely different from his SC1 incarnation.
I'm so torn on what system to pick this up on. On one hand, multiplayer on the 360 would be nice. On the other, fucking Vader, installing on the Harddrive, and fucking Vader.
Well, there's one more fighter slot on the character select screen than there are actual fighters to unlock, so I'm guessing that it's for when you buy Vader/Yoda off the marketplace.
Anyone make a character yet? A decent amount of customization to be had. Made a pretty sweet Michael Dudikoff!
I've been doing that "Suffer" Vader Choke all day.
Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

Christ the tower mode is difficult.. I can't get to the 20th floor even. How am I supposed to win 12 consecutive fights on a persistant lifebar with these cheap ass fucking characters I'm fighting?

For the record: fuck lizardmen, fuck voldoo bondage guys, and fuck Vader's secret apprentice when he decides to be a cheap force-spamming sack of fucking fuckshit.

Oh I nearly forgot, also fuck everyone who plays this online and just spams the knockback attack until they put you out of the ring.
I've gotten to the 20th floor of the tower and it's literally impossible to beat. The last chick you have to fight has a move that not only fully blocks any damage you do, but also regenerates her health. It's absurd.
The Apprentice is an overpowered combo spamming motherfucker that makes Kilik look balanced.
I <3 this game. Haven't played a SC game since the Dreamcast but am having a blast with it so far. But, as much fun as it is to play as him, fuck Yoda. What an unbalanced character. Jesus.
Why can't i perform the soul crushing moves? I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. The opponent's meter is flashing red so I hit the LB button and nothing ever happens. This game is pretty cool though. I made the mistake of playing with Yoda at first but there are so many characters that are better. Yoda's so fucking small, it's kind of strange. It is impossible to grab Yoda so he's immune to that.

To do the critical finisher: once their meter is blinking red, keep hitting them until you see/hear it "break" and then IMMEDIATELY hit the left bumper (or whatever you have it set to) to activate the attack. You've got a split second window to do it in.
they don't tell you that shit about "when it breaks" in the manual. Thanks! I do love this game. I havent played a fighting game since MKA.
Am I a dick for enjoying playing as Maxi as much as I do? I love the high-mid-low barrage I can inflict with him to keep my opponents guessing.

Also, he does the fucking Robocop (the move where he slides forward and plays the drums on his opponents torso). That's my second favorite move to end a match ever (first place: Taki's neckstab throw.)
Still need to pick up the 360 version (roomie has the PS3 going on), but am loving the time I have spent with it. And most definitely looking forward to getting on some on-line matches with you all. You will see another side of Doc, the competetive, the side that hates it when someone beats them for three matches in a row, the side that curses and screams and gets so very, very into it.

Oh yes, there will be blood.
Enough Chewers jump onto this thing, I might be tempted to tear myself away from Ninja Gaiden and give it a rent.
I beat the Apprentice, but how do I get him as a character? He was a bitch to beat, too. Almost broke my controller in two from throwing the fucking thing.

And I created a character using the Ivy template and now all she wears is red lacy underwear. Springy. Yeah, I'm kinda pathetic. My wife thinks so too.
She married you, so what does that make her?

Beat arcade mode with Yoda to unlock him, and yes, he is a filthy motherfuck trying to beat sometimes.

The only thing that pisses me off about customization is that, say I want Taki in nothing but lacy underwear? Well, now her stats are totally gimped and shes useless in a fight - it's a flawed system for practical purposes.
I have the PS3 version, so I assume it's arcade mode with Vader then.
