I'm just happy that the Hawks were able to take the Celts to a game seven. I was going to be satisfied that they just win ONE game so that they could save face. I never expected them to win three against the top-ranked team in the NBA.
The Magic need to show up tonight. Even if they lose close, that'd be better than getting manhandled again. I mean, in a sense, they're playing with house money -- not too many people expected them to get out of the first round, let alone win the division and get 50+ wins, so anything after the Toronto series is like gravy -- but it'd be nice to see them put up a little more of a fight.
I think the Pistons may have the most annoying arena announcer I've ever heard.
Nah. Mason's great. I mean, I hate him when the Cavs are playing the Pistons, but he's unique.

Good thing the Pistons won by more than three. Otherwise, the Magic would have every reason to protest this game.

Someone needs to punch Dwight Howard in the face for his own benefit. He's too nice.

I was thinking this same thing in his post-game interview, when he was smiling about the clock controversy. LeBron James wouldn't be smiling about it. Chris Paul wouldn't be smiling about it. Kevin Garnett would probably have a few choice "motherfuckers" to say about it.
If ever there was a team to antagonize and bring the man out of Dwight Howard, it will be the Pistons. Unless somebody tells DeShawn Stevenson that Dwight Howard compared him to Skee-Lo or something.
I just don't know why the NBA doesn't have someone watching the clock, and if it doesn't move, they alert the refs, who stop play until the problem is fixed. The NFL has an official keeping time on the field, so if the stadium clock stops, they still know how much time is left. I don't see why replay has to be an issue at all.
This is very reminiscent of the Cavs/Spurs series from last year. The Cavs' lack of an offensive system is death against superior defensive teams, and Mike Brown has no idea how to adjust on that side of the floor. He's a great defensive coach, but if the Cavs go down quick to the Celts (four or five game series), Brown might have to go.
I've said it before, but man Tayshaun Prince does not know how to disappoint in the playoffs (unless you're a Magic fan). Now they can complain all they want about shot clocks, but we just beat them missing one of our superstar players.

At this point, I'm rooting for Lakers vs Celtics redux. Be great just for the vintage games shown on ESPN & NBA TV.! <Also, Beaks: Congrats on your boys beating my Hawks. Unfortunately, looks like the fun ends there! Here's hoping for an angry, return-to-form from Ben Wallace and a point guard who can hit the open 'J'.>
post #61 of 263
If you look on YouTube, there's a channel dedicated to classic games and assorted NBA goodies. Just in the last two evenings, I watched Game 7 of the 1984 Finals and Larry Bird's retirement ceremony.

I was born ten years too late to really enjoy being a Celts fan...

I'm a Cavs fan, dude. I hate the fucking Celtics.

I wouldn't mind, personally. Then again, I root for the Celts, so I'm allowed to not mind. Mr. Smith, being a Cavs fan, is allowed to have the opposite opinion. (And I'd assume, should that Lakers-Celtics matchup happen, the rest of the NBA fanbase will be patently sick of the media hammering that story to death.)

These road performances are really starting to annoy me.

But...but... can't you just picture all the new interviews with Larry & Magic!! All the old stories they'll share. Maybe they'll even shoot a new Converse commercial! Or if we're really lucky, somehow they'll get Kurt Rambis & Greg Kite involved in the story! Tales of picks set and injured backs. Talk about good times!

Sure, I like seeing Kurt Rambis get neck-tackled as much as anybody. But, you know, I'm pretty sure that the folks who still give two shits about an NBA team not in Boston or Los Angeles are going to be pretty damn sick of the media coverage real fast.

Not David Stern, of course. He'll be privately pulling for that matchup, because any other Finals matchup won't pull in Joe Casual Sports Fan, the guy who stopped watching after Jordan retired the second time.

Then again, the Celts need to win on the road before any of this comes to pass.

Hey, Beaks: Congrats, maybe your boys are back in it after all!

So is David Stern.

Anyway, I love listening to the media dissect the Knicks situation, refering to this as a step towards rebuilding the team, as if, Isaiah was somehow the sole reason why they were over the cap.

The NY Knicks were in salary cap hell before Isaiah, during Isaiah, and will continue to be even after Isaiah.

The NY Knicks will not, I repeat, will not rebuild.
Isaiah thought pairing Steve Francis with Stephon Marbury was a good idea.
Here's the scenario I keep hearing with the Knicks: D'Antoni cleans house, gets rid of some of the bigger contracts, then toughs out a couple of sub-par seasons. Then, along comes 2010, when the Knicks have cap space, a player-friendly coach, and an up-tempo style, and they promptly back up a dumptruck full of money to LeBron James' house.

That's how the media is spinning it, but there's no way in hell the Knicks are giving up on 2008-09. Jim Dolan simply will not allow it, heck, you can even hear it in D'Antoni's remarks, "I look at the roster and that's the roster I'm going to win with."

It's always been ownership pushing the win at all costs mantra.

Actually, that bit of wisdom came from Larry Brown, who, of course, was foolishly hired by Isaiah Thomas.
Finally...The New York Knicks take away Isaiah Thomas jobs as GM and Coach, they hire Donnie Walsh as President and he hires Mike D'Antoni as Head Coach and all the media can do is complain about it. While I do understand that the media wanted ex Knick PG Mark Jackson hired and that might have been a good move, but he has no experience and if he fails as a coach, then who becomes the next coach? I am glad that the Knicks hired the best coach who might turn them into the Phoenix Suns East if Donnie Walsh can fix the salary cap problem. While it will take a few years...I think that the Knicks will be a good team by 2010 if they sign the right free agents.

I am worried as a Heat fan that if their new Coach Eric Spolestra does not become a good coach then SG Dwayne Wade will go to the NY Knicks as a free agent.

The media is complaining about it? Perhaps from D'Antoni's perspective, but all I hear is kudos to the Knicks, which, well, is ridiculous. Everyone that thinks the Knicks are changing their fundamental direction, a direction they've been on for well over a decade, simply doesn't understand how the garden is run.

Why exactly is that considered a good thing? It's been pretty well demonstrated out in the West that D'Antoni's system of ignoring defense can make for a fun regular season and a dearth of titles.
I'm just here to say that if the Spurs get to win the series against New Orleans and then the finals, they better give Ginobili the MVP award.
Kernel, The Knicks have not been either good, a fun team to watch, and they haven't made the playoffs since Jeff Van Gundy was fired. So if Mike D'Antoni can build a great offense in 3 or 4 years, it will still be better than the Isaiah Thomas years.

Well, that's not entirely true, since, well, the Knicks made the playoffs for the first time in two years with Isaiah's arrival (2004). But sure, the Knicks have successfully lowered expectations to the point that fans would be ecstatic with the same sort of perennial playoff contender they would have derided in the 90s.

The AV of last year is back! For one game!

Guarding LeBron is clearly wearing Pierce down, and AV is doing to Garnett what he did to Sheed in last year's Pistons series. But that Boston crowd is going to swing momentum right back into the Celtics' favor.

Brown is going to have to be so careful with his rotations. And West is going to have to continue playing over his head.
Good luck! <Do you have a fave team out west?>
post #83 of 263
In general, I root for the Clippers. I used to like the Mavs (Nowitzki's the backbone of my fantasy basketball team), but they're not fun to watch anymore.

In the Western Conference playoffs, I'm definitely pulling for the Hornets.

Just watched Sheed manhandle Dwight Howard. When's this kid gonna toughen up? He's reaching Bosh-like levels of softness.
Stan Van Gundy should have a BB gun and shoot any Magic player who attempts a 3-pointer at this point. They're just lobbing crap up there hoping it hits. And it doesn't help that absolutely no one is going in to help rebound.
A longtime Clippers fan myself, this year was disheartening. Always one step forward, two steps back. (The lottery again, YEAHH!) i wonder if the Livingston kid'll ever be the same.
On the defensive end, Howard reminds me of a young Hakeem. He just needs to mature.
Yeah, people forget he's only 22.
Young enough to find out what a Detroit schooling was.
I'm not the world's biggest b-ball fan, but that vid of LeBron telling his meddling courtside mom to "sit yo ass DOWN!" cracked me the hell up. I guess if you're that rich, you can swear at your mom on national TV. Me, I'd get bitchslapped harder than that Golden Compass Coca-Cola bear.

Home Teams are now 21-1 in the second round of the playoffs. I would imagine the law of averages says that a road has to win at some point.

Yeah, at this point its getting bizarre. It would seem that one of the next three games someone will have to win on the road (Although if they want to give Detroit more rest thats just fine with me too).

The 5 triple points from Ginobili were great. The Spurs really reacted today.
Hopefully West will be in shape to play come game 7, I really like the Hornets (not as much as the Pistons, but y'know).

Boobie Gibson has a separated shoulder and is expected to miss one to two weeks? Ouch. I can't see how this Cleveland team can survive without him.

More like overreacted to every last bit of contact. That was a disgusting game. I love how anti-flopper Jeff Van Gundy swallows his ire when it's the Spurs working the refs.

It must be impossible to fairly officiate a Spurs game. I wish I had the video of Bruce Bowen bouncing two steps out of bounds when he brushed up against Chris Paul cutting to the baseline last night. That would've been Paul's fifth.

Please give us Joey Crawford in Game 7. And an epic gooning of Robert Horry. And no more Mike Breen. Please.

This is where Mike Brown's stubborn hatred of Damon Jones comes back to munch on his backside. I hate to be that guy, but a Game 6 loss might hasten a different way of doing things (offensively) in Cleveland.

Well, seeing as the NBA, in it's infinite wisdom, doesn't have them playing again until Monday, you'd think so.

Three days between playoff games is ridiculous, particularly between a Game 6 and 7.

So true. I couldn't even stay with the game, too pissed off. When did the NBA lose their balls?! The play-offs used to be about hard play & do-dirt-shit. No more.

Indeed, you'd think that ABC would want all Game 7s on the weekend. Then again, I don't know if there's that much difference between cable and over-the-air ratings at this point.

Makes me misty eyed for the days when NBC would do the playoff tripleheaders...

NBA on NBC. Ah, memories of Heat versus Knicks. Fights. Losing.

Aw.
