The Sinead vibe is definitely there, as is Sitek's overproduction. It's not the 10-car pileup many predicted / hoped for. (Maybe a 5-car.) I like 'Anywhere' more -- she sounds more relaxed and part of the song, even though she's right alongside an intrusive, ironic Casio beat.

I don't think I'll be able to listen to 'Falling Down' more than once or twice.

I don't know, I'd say this is pretty fucking terrible. Bored, okay vocals over shitty beats.

Yet another entry to the "Hey, I guess the 80s aren't dead after all!" resurgence in pop music today.

Not horrible, but it certainly isn't a "wow" crossover. Don't make this your day job, Scarlett!

Ouch.

I think it's a big pile of fail.

That seems to be the consensus, and based only on 'Falling Down' I'd conclude the same. But 'Anywhere' has something that salvages the song -- if only barely.

A later thought about this stuff was that someone is sure to try to license it for commercials, etc. I wonder what if any stipulations Waits has about that eventuality, given his notorious disdain for licensing his songs.

Yikes. Still, it's worth repeating: I was expecting an aural holocaust, so at least it wasn't that bad.

Why is she doing karaoke to the menus from the Fight Club DVD?

I just don't think her voice is that strong on either song.

Unfortunately, there are massive groups of humans that would argue the fitness of Waits' voice on the originals.

Waits' voice isn't perfect, but it's got so much character to it that whatever formal failings it might have it more than makes up for it on atmosphere and sheer volume. While I don't hate either song like some do, Scarlett's got a much more generic voice going on--it's not as bubblegum processed as other starlets-cum-singers, but there ain't a whole lot there that's particularly noteworthy either.

Sadly, this is what music executives are thinking when they sign these girls.

The thing is, she doesn't actually have a bad singing voice. Her version of 'Summertime' on Unexpected Dreams is pretty good (based on the 30 second sample on AllMusic).

Big Jim Slade nailed the bad karaoke feel of these Waits covers.

Scarlett doesn't seem to have the worst voice of all-time, but that's not much of a compliment. I like her well enough as an actress, but this mess would have never come together if she wasn't already famous. Time to pretend this never happened already.

PS: I've come to love the hell out of TV on the Radio. Yet another reason why I wish this album was never made.
