Reviewing older releases

When ever I post a review of something that was released more then a week before posting the one bit of feedback I'm almost guaranteed to get in DVDActive's little talkback section is "Nice review, but why are you reviewing this so late", or something along those lines.

To me the whole point of internet film and DVD review is fact that the it creates a library. Before I had the chance to lend my voice to the library I remember seaching desperately for reviews for possibly shady non-R1 releases of Fulci's Seven Notes in Black, and I still regularly look up reviews for older releases. Just the other day I finally saw 28 Weeks Later and rushed to CHUD to recall what Devin had to say.

Not to even mention the fact that I don't think most people care if a review of some B-label horror release is posted a month or two past the release date.

Am I crazy? Are critiques only valid within a week of a release date? Does no one else like going to Rottentomatoes.com and looking up some 1998 release just for the hell of it? I've asked this question of DVDActive readers and I've never gotten a satisfying response, so I've moved it here to CHUD, hoping for some answers.

Nah. Spike Marshall just started threads for Tarantino's first three films, and people have gotten into it. The "You Got It Wrong"'s main value has been the way it's gotten us to look freshly at some old chestnuts. The No Country For Old Men dvd reviews on CHUD probably benefited from the gestation period. (By that logic, the eventual reviews for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford should surpass the film itself.)

Usually if people are attacking someone for posting a "late" review, it's because they can't stand that person to begin with.

That's the annoying thing, usually it's overall positive feedback. I can handle the 'fuck yous' and 'ur wrong this is teh best movie evars'. I suppose the actual quotes I get are more along the lines of 'but why pray tell are we reviewing this now' (that's a more recent quote). And we've got a few regular readers that are getting huffy about the Blu-ray re-release reviews, as if re-reviewing something that came out on regular DVD several years ago is somehow a waste of everyone's time.

I just review current movies on my MySpace blog, but that's merely out of a desire to not accidentally plagirize by using wording and phrasing I may have seen in other reviews. In terms of your specific situation Gabe that's probably just geeks who always buy on the first week talking.

A small but vocal portion of the internet is absurdly focused only on the current moment.

Ignore it.

Truer words are not often spoken Russ, perhaps I just need to be reminded every once and a while.

I actually do this all the time. Not the reviewing part, but the reading part. DVDBeaver has been a godsend when it comes to looking at the tech specs on past DVD releases to see if it's worth my money or not.

Which isn't to say the transfer is the only thing I'm interested in. Just the other day I finished The Wild Bunch and a quick google revealed that Russ reviewed it's DVD not too long ago. Stuff like that is fun and God knows how many sleepless, sexless nights I've spent staying up to read essays on films I haven't even seen yet when I should really be studying or sleeping instead. I learn anecdotes like "the Criterion Collection's company softball team is called the True Foes." Sigh.

Keep at it Gabe.

eh, you shoulda rushed to Chud to recall what I had to say about it in my DVD review.

just kidding.

sort of ...

Actually, I got some nice feedback from people concerning my recent classic movie reviews in my main page blog (M, Seventh Seal, Spirit of the Beehive, Gimme Shelter and The Third Man so far). Most people who give the "talkbacks" are retarded or assholes anyway. Review the great movies, because for every person who bitches about it not being new, there is someone else who might be turned on to something they missed and that makes it worth it.

I absolutely love "older" movie reviews and discussion, rather we are talking about a film 3 years old or 50 years old. About 5 years ago I was working with someone on making a film website focusing on older films. We were both going through our DVD and VHS collections and writing up..hmm not reviews, more like discussion pieces. It was a lot of damn fun, but finishing up school kind of took a front seat and it was put on the back burner.
