Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to check out the exhibit when I'm in New York in June, though it's a shame I won't be around for the party next month--sounds like a good time (though potentially terrifying; his stuff is bizarre enough sober, I can't imagine how I'd react to his paintings after guzzling whiskey all night).

Wasn't there a documentary produced about him a few years back? Did anyone ever see it?

Yeah, I actually just watched it about a week or so ago. It's not too bad, consisting mostly of readings from his 15,000 page novel and interviews with people who knew him toward the end of his life. Worth checking out, as the guy was definitely an interesting (if clearly deranged) cat. I'd love to see this exhibit someday.

Yeah, it's called In the Realms of the Unreal, and is a play it now selection on Netflix. Going to have to check it out this week. Fascinating stuff, it really is. The more I read up on him the more I look forward to seeing his art...

Yeah, his stuff is something else. The American Visionary Art Museum down here in Baltimore has had some of his work on display in the past so I've gotten to see some of it. The AFAM show looks pretty great; I'll have to track down a copy of the documentary in the meantime.

I've never been in darger, but hopefully the exits are clearly marked.

"Darger Will Robinson! Darger!"

As someone who keeps expounding on the effectiveness in horror of violence against children, I must say this guy was clearly ahead of his time. But I don't think I've ever heard of him. I can't, off the top of my head, place the neil Gaiman reference. Anyone know that one? Something I've prehaps been puzzled over for years might suddenly make sense now. . . .

Tonight!

(Oh and btw Iggy, the Gaiman reference is in Sandman: Endless Nights. Darger influenced one of the five characters who's a weird lonely guy writing a huge book in his house.)
