Just Cause

So I re-rented this title to check some stuff out for my blog (sorry Alex) and I forgot how much I liked this game. Certainly liberating San Esperito is proving to be a nice primer for GTA IV. Nothing beats leaping onto the roof of a car, leaping from the roof to a motorcycle, gunning the motorcycle off of a cliff and parachuting onto a speedboat and the game sets these kind of opportunities up all the time. I've only played for about an hour so far and some of the chases have been epic.

It sure looked pretty, and it was apparently the studio's first attempt at a major game or something... but it didn't quite do anything for me. Still, sequel's expected soon.

Actually just got a copy of this on the cheap today. Haven't tried it yet, but I've heard good things, about it being good dumb fun, at least. You bastards better not let me down, I need something to tide me over the next few days. Uh, in between COD4 matches and Assassin's Creed, at least.

It will last you about 2 hours. Sorry Alex, i'm not endorsing it - if you want something to tide you over.

Can't recommend it enough recently.

Stupidly, I thought this was about the Sean Connery/Laurence Fishburn wrongly convicted killer movie. Clearly not the case.

My PC will sputter and die if I even look at that, Bees. Do want to try it, though. I play on trading the game back as soon as I'm done, anyway...

There used to be a thread for this but I can't locate it. I played it like mad for the first few days, mainly pulling off retarded stunts. Can get repetitive, but it's fun for what it is.

Although it finds high-end pcs sexually attractive, it runs fine low-spec on cards like the Radeon 9600. I use an X800 and it'll quite happily chug at medium.

The engine it just full of glitches and stuff - leaks that make it slightly inefficient.

Then again, you might play it on a laptop. In which case, you could well be screwed. Not long till GTA - JC will last you i'm sure.

I dug Just Cause. It may be a second rate GTA rip-off, but the fact that I could get into a fight with a bunch of cops, go speeding up a dirt road, launch my vehicle right off the side of a cliff, jump out the door and parachute away to the opposite end of the island while watching cop cars tumbling down the side of the mountain was endlessly entertaining. I certainly felt more 'free' than in any other sandboxer, save for maybe Crackdown, because climbing skyscrapers was the same incredible feeling.

On the other hand, I spent all the time I played it just dicking around, getting into battles and then doing my parachute escape tactic and not really progressing far story-wise, so maybe the game doesn't hold up when played "properly". I'm sure it's showing it's age by now, but I'm looking foward to the sequel.

I know this is a Just Cause thread (fun game, I thought), but I wanted to ask Bees how long does it take before STALKER gets, well, engaging. The timed side quests are ridiculous (especially since you're on foot the entire time), your inventory is small and you can't carry much weight, and damage you deal to enemies seems really, really small. I was just playing a few minutes ago, snuck up on a guy and had to shoot him in the head 4 times with an AK47 before he dropped. And if you don't get head shots you're even more screwed. Not to mention the AI has remarkable targeting abilities.

I mean, I like the environments, and it gets points for the unique setting, storyline and rpg elements, but damn, it's been frustrating getting started.

Sorry to derail the thread more.

Just Cause was really cool surprise.

The story missions are really worth playing, especially the later ones. The battles get much larger than what you can cause just dicking around, and they require a few pretty intense "stunts".

I still think one of the best next-gen experiences you can have is taking your stupid little gyro-helicopter-thing to the top of the world at sunset and just leaping out.

I played it on my PS2 which apparently was a poor port. It was definitely fun for a few hours but it's a rental, I did finish the story missions, but the side missions got old fast. That said I will definitely rent the sequel.

Have you played Deus Ex or Oblivion? It's similar in timeframe to either of those before you start to get powerful and larger inventories - tougher battle armour etc.

As with those games too, occasionally you'll find something that can seriously tip the balance.

Saying that, there are some incredible missions about 1/3 of the way into the main storyline. Escorting a downed helicopter's passenger to a secret isolated laboratory where they throw all kinds of neat toys at you is one worth noting.

But I let the whole thing immerse me - I love the concept and was willing to overlook the flaws in the engine, which is really kinda hard to ask some people when we've got some truly polished gems out there on the market. It might not even be your kind of thing?

Thanks for the info. I'll keep plugging away at it, I think I just haven't really got to the good stuff yet. Exploring is still a blast, but all the hazards can make it a little tedious at times. I did play a pretty cool mission last night in a spooky factory that had me on the edge of my seat at times.

Anyway, apologies agian for the derail. Carry on!

I just performed a covert assassination mission by commandeering a jet and divebombing into a small rural idyll. Just Cause, always a blast.

/Derail, sorry - you do pick up hardware and artifacts that deal with lots of the hazards - that's how they limit exploration early on.
