Darksiders: Wrath of War

Thread Starter
What the Hell is this? It almost slipped off the front page of GamePro before I even caught it. Anyone else heard of this?

Quote:
It's Chapter 6 of the book of Revelation. This final, chaotic and often controversial section of Bible tells of apocalypse and God's final judgment over Satan. It's dark, gritty and intensely violent...the perfect setting for a video game.

This is Darksiders: Wrath of War, an impressive-looking new game from THQ and Vigil Games. You'll play as War, one of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who is known for his fiery red horse named Ruin, excessive violence and a destructive greatsword.

The Four Horsemen, including War, are sent to bring upon the Apocalypse, but they are tricked into unleashing chaos too soon. This brings an early end to humankind thus creating a rift between angels and devils that are left battling for the remaining earthling souls. For his wrongdoings, War is sent back to Earth by the Charred Council--regulators of Heaven and Hell--to figure out just what went wrong...sans his powers.

Pick up objects in the environment to conserve precious ammunition.
It's God of War meets Diablo for those who need a video-game recipe. Zombie enemies called "the Wicked" add to the Darksiders' gloomy atmosphere, and when War begins combat, he'll have his trusty sword to make quick work of any opposition. Other weapons, including a chaingun, will appear throughout the game, categorized as either demonic or angelic. War can also pick up world objects--even cars-- to use as on-the-fly weaponry--quite a nifty feature.

Once acquired, Ruin the horse can be summoned at anytime.
As you progress and fight your way through Earth as War, you'll be able to slay both angels and demons because you're not actually on the side of good or evil. So you can slaughter either, earning souls for each kill to trade with a demonic soul dealer for character upgrades.

So far, Darksiders' combat looks God of War-esque in this open-world action game, and the presence of environmental puzzles should provide even more Kratos nostalgia. But the ability to upgrade War with enhanced physical skills (superior jumping, for example) adds another layer of action. From here, we saw War bound across giant cracks in the earth that divide good and evil. And once War recovers his red horse Ruin, he'll be privy to stomping baddies via deadly hooves, not to mention a bevy of other combat maneuvers.

Keep an eye out for more coverage of Darksiders on GamePro.com, though we're not expecting this one until early next year.

BUMP

Having played quite a bit of preview code for this I’ve gotta say this is looking like it’s going to be the first of many great games of ’10.

There are a few niggling issues with the framerate, on the 360 it is surprisingly jerky, but War, the main character, handles really well and the level design and structure is amazing. It sort of makes me think of what Brutal Legend should have been, i.e. a Zelda/God of War hybrid. The design ethos isn’t mind blowing, but it’s consistent and some effects (like Sandworms rippling underneath deserts) are really cool looking.

Unless something goes terribly wrong with the rest of the game I’m genuinely excited for this.

ETA: In actuality the best way to describe the game is a next-gen version of Soul Reaver. Very similar feel between the games, although Darksiders has better overall controls. War isn’t as light on his feet as someone like Dante, but he’s way more nimble than Raziel/Kratos et al.

Yep, looking forward to this one. Looks like they've nailed the combat based on the game play vids floating around, now they just have to make sure the zelda clone game play holds up for the entire length of the game.

Wait isn this the game Joe Madureira (comic book artist) developed? I have to say, it looks really good, and i might give it a try.
I will be picking this one up on launch day. Been waiting a while for this one.

Oh, I am very, very excited now. Soul Reaver is still one of my favorite games.

The more I've seen about this game, the more I want to play it. I really like the art style, and the gameplay looks like a lot of fun. The beginning of the year is shaping up to be really busy for me, but I think I'll have to find some time to play this game.
Just found out Im getting a free copy of this from a mate who works in the industry here in Oz - I'm excited. I need to start thinking beyond Mass Effect 2 for what I'll be playing next year.

The game does nothing new, but it does everything it does pretty damn well. So far it feels like the good mash-up between Zelda and God of war with a couple of Panzer dragoon on the rails sections thrown in. The combat seems really simple initially but get a couple more weapons like the throwing star and the scythe and things start to liven up especially since you can use those weapons all at the same time. So far, the game throws new enemy types at me on a regular basis.

The graphics are decent, while the story and pacing so far have been good. Half way through the first dungeon, and I'm going to be putting bayonetta on the back burner till I finish this.

EDIT:
Just noticed IGN AU gave it a 9.0

Been getting really solid reviews so far. Just a couple more days to go.

I'm really loving this game. Its a great little zelda/GOW clone thats been polished up and done really well. I'm really digging the art design too. Reminds me a lot of the chunky designs in World of Warcraft.

The game really steps up when the angels start appearing and then it gets awesome when you step into the Dune Sandworm infested world/dungeon. Trying to get away Sandworms on horseback while shooting them in the face is ace.

I'm wondering why THQ aren't promoting the shit out this game. They've got a possible franchise on their hands.

Is there a demo out for this? I'd like to play with it a bit before committing to a purchase.
Nope. There was supposed to be but they ended up not being able to get it done in time.
If they put out a demo I would probably buy this. I looked at the box a long time at Best Buy yesterday, but haven't read enough to really want to buy it with so much coming this month.
This sounds like something I'll definitely check out after I finish up Mass Effect 2 (playing through ME1 again right now)...and the Dragon Age Expansion. And Alpha Protocol, and Final Fantasy XIII and...well crap, I'll check it out sooner or later. It looks/sounds good.
Aghghhhh no sleeper hits in Q1 please, thank you
post #17 of 67
Dammit, with the CE of Mass Effect and the Steam sale, i can only afford one purchase this month....Bayonetta and this will have to duke it out, i guess.
Also, this looks like it will fill the massive horror that was Too Human, at least for the 360.

Any new play reviews?

8 from Gamesradar, including a pretty damn funny "this they stole from..." bit; but yeah, it might end up as a sleeper hit.

Just picked this up at the local Best Buy. Hope I have a chance to try it out today.

I'm not sure how they would make a demo of this game without including an entire dungeon. Anything else wouldn't give you a proper indication of what the game has in store for you, and would end up selling the game as an average GOW clone.

Maybe this will help: this is the best Zelda game not made by Nintendo. And this is just my opinion- the fact the the developers looted the God of War combat system quite liberally makes the games combat much more fun than any combat the Zelda series has had to offer.

I'm onto the very final dungeon but I'm in the process of moving house, so the games final boss will have to wait. Damn it.

How many hours of play? My new rule of thumb is that a game has to have at least 20 hours of gameplay or no purchase.

I can't attest to the length of the game, but for clarification's sake do you consider "hours of gameplay" only those that are spent playing through whatever Main/Single Player storyline the game has one time, or do you also include potential time spent in multiplayer, replay value (multiple endings and such), alternate modes/higher difficulties, and other such things as adding up in the hours of gameplay?

I'm mostly just curious. I find for a lot of people it's the former (Only time spent playing through the main quest one time counts), and that they tend not to take into account that they might get hours of gameplay out of some of the other things in the game (For instance, Batman: Arkham Asylum was relatively short as such games go, but the combat/stealth scenarios you could play on the side added up to a large chunk of time if you worked your way through them....especially if you were aiming for high scores.

I believe this is generally what people mean when they ask that question.

Have you picked it up Jmacq? Any impressions yet? If roads are passable, I think I might grab this game on my way home.

Better than Okami?

Bingo. The other stuff is great to know too but if I'm not spending at least 20 hours on the main quest then I'm not dropping $65 bones on the game.

No, I haven't gotten it yet. I was close to grabbing it last night but held off. There's a lot of stuff coming this month and bills to be paid, so I don't think I can justify leisure-spending another $60+ for a game I might not have time to really get into before my most-anticipated game of the year hits.
My buddy said that it was roughly 15 hours of gameplay but I don't know what his source was so that could be wrong.
IGN is clocking it around 15 with some replay value.
Okay, three hours in? This game IS Zelda. The first "dungeon" (actually a gothic cathedral) had rooms of varying enemy types that needed to be cleared before a door would unlock, demonic chests that had keys to open other doors, a sub-boss that once defeated gave up a special weapon, puzzles involving gears, levers, and switches, etc...

Yes, it's totally derivative. But who doesn't want a more mature (as in, wonderfully bloody and violent) version of Zelda? No one, that's who!

Plus, the finishing move animations are gloriously visceral.
I've been playing the game for just over ten hours and I think I'm at the final dungeon. If you're a GOW/Ninja gaiden action junkie like myself, make sure you play the game on the hardest difficulty to really get the full value of the combat system.

Jake, I never played Okami. My bad.

GRRAAAAHHHHWHHYYYYY

Just kidding. Check it out at some point, though. However I still wish you could turn off the fucking dialogue sounds. The bug-sidekick is unbearable.

Darksiders = purchased. Lots of fun. Awesome game!

Is the overworld map as expansive as any given Zelda game, or is it made up of tight, constricted spaces like Fable? It's hard to get a decent sense of its scale from the screenshots I've seen.

It's a mix of both, really. But it seems more expansive than Fable to me, even in many of its' "constricted" areas.
This is definitely a current-gen Soul Reaver in so many ways, so I'm really enjoying it for that quality. My only hang-up so far is that I can't interrupt a combo with an evade or block. This killed me a couple times already. I guess I shouldn't be hammering the attack button like a jerk, but it's frustrating all the same.
Block is completely useless. And the dash is half useless. Just run away when you see an attack coming.
The block counterattack kinda sucks, but the Shadow Challenge Whateverthefuck where you have to kill 5 enemies only using THAT COUNTERATTACK helps to polish your prowess with it.

Demo for PS3 and 360 hits the 25th! According to the pr folks it's going to take you 90 minutes to beat.
Got mixed feelings on this one. I think the pacing is off. I often wish I've finished a dungeon about 75% through it. And when I get sick of the dungeon I'd rather warp back to the merchant upgrade and come back, but that doesn't seem an option (once you enter those szones you are stuck till you complete them).

But despite that, every now and again there's a graet mechanic or idea that makes it all worth it. I liked the shrapnel gun and the horse mechanics are fun. Leveling my power glove and now it's becoming quite useful.

It feels like a consistant art design, but a real hodge podge of gameplay.
This was well worth my time. Really fun game, but just hackneyed enough to keep me from starting over again or going OCD with the trophies.

I will say that scouring the levels is worthwhile for the odd encounter with the refined gentleman zombie. It kind of catches you off-guard considering everything else in the game is so completely humorless.

Who IS that guy? Is his origin ever explained? And I kind of agree on the humorless charge, but I think it's also shooting for humor by intentionally overcompensating on the "badass" scale at times.
Best Buy has it $10 off this week. I am tempted, March 31 is still a long way off.......

You get a ton of souls for fighting him, so he's pretty much just a pinata--unless there's gentleman zombie fanfic out there already.

The scowling, constipated tone can be funny, but it's never really intentional. It's pretty self-serious for something that's basically biblical mythology as told by a D&D-addled 13-year-old. It's sometimes fun, sometimes a bit too much, depending on my mood. It helps that the voice talent is pretty good. And that I found out Vernon Wells was Samael.

Anyone else see this? Free copy of Red Faction: Guerilla if you bought Darksiders new. Of course I didn't have the little coupon in my copy, so I've got to dig around to see if I still have my receipt. It could be worth the $5 shipping charge.

Well gee, that's great, except that I already own Red Faction: Guerilla. Guess I can trade in my old copy and get a new one, though.

Still, it's a tremendous offer if you don't have RF:G (which is a pretty fun game in and of itself). Bravo to THQ for a pretty gutsy move, on that score.
I already put in my order for my free copy of RF. It's a pretty cool thing for THQ to do especially since I've been meaning to pick that game up on the cheap anyway.

Man. This game is really fun. Totally Soul Reaver, or an M rated Zelda mixed with God of War.

Yeah, it is. Couldn't quite figure out how someone could give this game anything below an 8.
I think it is exactly an 8. Lots of good ideas and art design. I still get burnt by the odd frustrating or annoying bit. Trying to take down the final Spider boss right now. It's more annoying than challenging.

I liked that the worm boss allowed a Vulgrim location right before it. Why don't all the zones have that?!?!

The power glove becomes a bit OP for regular guys. The multi hit ground slam (block + attack while not moving) stuns and damages everything in a reasonable radius.
